TODAY'S TRIVIA

1917: The first doughnut is fried by Salvation Army volunteer women for American troops in France during WW I

1963 Beatles record I Want to Hold Your Hand

1976: President Gerald Ford signed a bill posthumously making George Washington a 6-star general, the highest ever U.S. military rank

TODAY'S SMILE

A well-worn one-dollar bill and a similarly distressed fifty-dollar bill arrived at a Federal Reserve Bank to be retired. As they moved along the conveyor belt to be burned, they struck up a conversation.

The fifty-dollar bill reminisced about its travels all over the country. "I've had a pretty good life," the $50 proclaimed. "Why I've been to Las Vegas and Atlantic City, the finest restaurants in New York, performances on Broadway, and even a cruise to the Caribbean."

"Wow!" said the one-dollar bill. "You've really had an exciting life!"

"So tell me," says the fifty, "where have you been throughout your lifetime?"

The one dollar bill replies, "Oh, I've been to the Methodist Church, the Baptist Church, the Lutheran Church..."

The fifty-dollar bill interrupts, What's a church

Q: What has teeth but never eats?

My ancestors came to North America 5,000 years ago.

I am at by biggest and brightest in October.

My weight can fluctuate a lot.

I like to make faces at people.

Sometimes my name is used as a term of endearment.

I don't drink, but I sometimes get smashed.

I have seeds--alot of people eat them as a snack.

Think you know the answer?

TODAY'S WORD

en·co·mi·um noun, plural. en·co·mi·ums or en·co·mi·a

1. Warm, glowing praise. 2. A formal expression of praise; a tribute

TODAY'S REFLECTION

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith

Hebrews 12:1-2

We must never forget the great cloud of witness who have walked the faith before us and still have much to say about walking it today.

Let's learn about those who wore the name of Jesus before us so that we may know our place in that line and the legacy we have received. Let's read the old books, sing the old songs. Let's learn about those who built our churches. Let's meet those who walked with Christ ahead of us

Our lives intersect with the lives of faithful people who have gone before because we're all part of the same overarching story -- the story of God's redemption of his creation through Jesus
