TODAY'S THOUGHT

We must be willing to fail and to appreciate the truth that often "Life is not a problem to be solved, but a mystery to be lived. M. Scott Peck"

TODAY’S ACTION

Be kind and generous to all people—equally—without reservation.

TODAY’S QUOTE

The best way out of a problem is through it.

Old Saying

A story comes to mind about a farmer, who ploughed around a large rock in his fields for many years. He had broken many ploughshares in that time. One day after breaking another piece of his plough he decided to finally do something about it.

When he put a crowbar under the rock he was surprised that it lifted quite easily. He lamented all the time he lost working around it, instead of working with it.

Like the farmer we often plough around problems. Often the best way of tackling any problem is to deal with it straight away and straight on.

CAR TROUBLE

Fighting rush-hour traffic from suburban Maryland to Washington D.C., can cause its share of near misses and irritating moments.

One morning, a young lady darted her compact car from a side street into the stream of traffic immediately in front of a driver just a few car lengths ahead of me, forcing him to brake sharply. He avoided hitting her by inches and was obviously furious.

Within seconds, traffic stopped at a red light, and I watched him pull up behind the offender, leap from his car, and stride angrily toward hers. Clearly, he intended to give her a royal bowling out.

Seeing him coming, the very attractive young lady jumped from her car and ran to meet him—a big smile on her face! Before he could say one word or know what was happening, she had thrown her arms around him, hugged him tightly, and planted a passionate kiss on his lips!

Then she was back in her car and driving away, leaving her antagonist standing in the middle of the street still speechless and looking somewhat confused and embarrassed—but no longer angry!

The day finally arrived: Forrest Gump dies and goes to Heaven. He is met at the Pearly Gates by St. Peter himself. The gates are closed, however, and Forrest approaches the gatekeeper. Saint Peter says, "Well, Forrest, it's certainly good to see you. We have heard a lot about you.

I must inform you that the place is filling up fast, and we've been administering an entrance examination for everyone. The tests are fairly short, but you need to pass before you can get into Heaven."

Forrest responds, "It shore is good to be here St. Peter. I was looking forward to this. Nobody ever told me about any entrance exams. Sure hope the test ain't too hard; life was a big enough test as it was."

St. Peter goes on, "Yes, I know Forrest. But the test I have for you is only three questions. Here is the first: What days of the week begin with the letter 'T'? Second, how many seconds are there in a year? Third, what is God's first name?"

Forrest goes away to think the questions over. He returns the next day and goes up to St. Peter to try to answer the exam questions. St. Peter waves him up and asks, "Now that you have had a chance to think the questions over, tell me your answers."

Forrest says, "Well, the first one, -how many days of the week begin with the letter 'T'? Shucks, that one's easy; that'd be Today and Tomorrow!" The saint's eyes open wide and he exclaims, "Forest! That's not what I was thinking, but ... you do have a point though, and I guess I didn't specify, so I give you credit for that answer."

"How about the next one" says St. Peter, "how many seconds in a year?" "Now that one's harder," says Forrest. "But, I thunk and thunk about that, and I guess the only answer can be twelve." Astounded, St. Peter says, "Twelve! Twelve! Forrest, how in Heaven's name could you come up with twelve seconds in a year?" Forrest says, "Shucks, there gotta be twelve: January second, February second, March second....." "Hold it," interrupts St., Peter. "I see where you're going with it. And I guess I see your point, though that wasn't quite what I had in mind, but I'll give you credit for that one too."

"Let's go on with the next and final question," says St. Peter, "Can you tell me God's first name?" Forrest says, "Well shore, I know God's first name. Everbody probly knows it. It's Howard."

"Howard?" asks St. Peter. "What makes you think it's 'Howard'?" Forrest answers, "It's in the prayer." "The prayer?" asks St. Peter, "Which prayer?"

"The Lord's Prayer," responds Forrest: "Our Father, who art in heaven, Howard be thy name...."

... lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest.

John 4:35

Of the twenty or more times the phrase "lift up your eyes" is used in the Bible only a handful are negative and those generally forbidding lifting up eyes to idolatry. The primary thought is that to lift up one's eyes is to see reality. Over and over again, lifting our eyes is linked to the reality of God and his majesty.

God calls us to look outward and upward to the limitless possibilities he has placed before his children.

Lift up your eyes!

When you stumble, God has a new plan for you to follow.

Lift up your eyes!

You have mission given to you by the Creator of the universe.

Lift up your eyes!

TODAY’S ADVICE FROM THE OLD FARMER’S ALMANAC

St. Michael's rain does not stay long in the sky.

Michaelmas (Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel) -The feast day of St. Michael, the archangel and overcomer of the Devil, is a Christian celebration based on the ancient Celtic calendar. Its main importance in people's lives was that of a seasonal signpost in the year.

In the British Isles, crops were harvested and the surplus sold by late September, so this became the time when farmers would pay their yearly rents to landowners. Everyone ate goose at Michaelmas to bring prosperity, and many farmers included "a goose fit for the lord's dinner" with their rent payments.

Great market fairs occurred just before the feast day, and the large crowds these attracted made it convenient to hold elections at this time..

If you eat goose on Michaelmas, you will never want for money during the entire next year.

Michaelmas is also a "Quarter Day." The ancient Celtic people divided the year into four major sections, or quarters, and then divided each of these in half to make an eight-part year that reflected the natural progression of the seasons.

Foods traditional for Michaelmas include new wine; goose; cakes of oats, barley, and rye; and carrots. Some groups in the United States, such as the Pennsylvania Dutch, have kept Michaelmas, or "Harvest Home," traditions alive.

TODAY’S WORD

verve noun

1. Energy and enthusiasm in the expression of ideas, especially in artistic performance or composition

2. Vitality; liveliness. Synonym vigor.

TODAY’S REFLECTION

Dear brothers and sisters, if another Christian is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. Share each other's troubles and problems, and in this way obey the law of Christ. If you think you are too important to help someone in need, you are only fooling yourself. You are really a nobody. Be sure to do what you should, for then you will enjoy the personal satisfaction of having done your work well, and you won't need to compare yourself to anyone else. For we are each responsible for our own conduct.

(Galatians 6:1-5 NLT 1st Ed.)

We've all done it, right? Tried to evade responsibility by pretending not to be aware. Defending a dumb act by saying everybody else does it. Saying it isn't really so bad after all. Or by blaming it on somebody else.

Take responsibility for goofs, foul-ups, and moral failures. Teach your children that lying or refusing to be accountable is a far worse offense than breaking either a toy or a rule. And the best way to teach that lesson is to model mature behavior around them.

Among other things, mature behavior means trying to make goodchoices and owning up to it when you don't.

ROUGH FLIGHT

The pastor of our church began his sermon with this story: "I was on a plane last week, from Chicago to California, when we ran into some very severe turbulence. As it got worse, the passengers became more and more alarmed, and even the flight attendants began to look concerned. Finally, one of them noticed that I had 'Rev.' in front of my name on the passenger list, came over to me, and said, 'Sir, this is really frightening. Do you suppose you could, I don't know...do something religious?'"

"So I took up a collection."

TODAY’S ADVICE FROM THE OLD FARMER’S ALMANAC

HINTS OF HONEY

Winnie-the-Pooh ate his peas with honey. According to folklore, honey is a remedy for arthritis, asthma, bed-wetting, coughs, sore throats, and weight control. The nutritional powers of honey are well documented (although it should not be fed to children under the age of one).

Dreaming about bees may signify riches or success in business, probably as a result of being "as busy as a bee" in profitable undertakings. "Diligence, hard work, eloquence, and wisdom are the bee's domain."

HONEY COOKIES

 1/2 cup butter

3/4 cup honey

1 egg, beaten

2 tablespoons milk

2 cups flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons baking powder

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Cream the butter, and add the honey and beaten egg. Beat until fluffy, then beat in the milk. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder. Combine the dry ingredients with the creamed mixture. Drop by teaspoons onto a greased baking sheet. Bake until lightly browned, about 12 to 15 minutes. Makes 4 dozen cookies.

I will be going to the Renaissance Festival then. Every year for about 10 years now most of my family gathers for this festival. We all dress in costumes and try to get into the Medival Times.

It’s lots of fun for those that go. They have something there for the whole family to enjoy. In the past we’ve been blessed with beautiful weather, but this Saturday isn’t looking real good right now. The long range is calling for temps in the low 60’s with a chance of showers. We’ll be hoping that changes be it actually gets here – it often does.

The festival is in Harveysburg so it should be warmer there than here. That’s quite a bit south of here. Here’s a link to the festival if you’d like to see where we are going. http://www.renfestival.com/

Have a great day all ! Another wonderful one on the Way !

Please pray for God's protection of our troops and HIS wisdom for their commanders.

Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. I ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior

GOD BLESS YOU !

TODAY IS…ACORN SQUASH DAY

Now, who thought of the name "squash"? It sounds like what happens when you step on a bug. But, even with that name, acorn squash is a delicious, sweet vegetable. It's also called winter squash - not because it grows in the winter, but because it lasts all winter if it's stored in a cool, dry place. This is because the skin is so much thicker than a summer squash like zucchini.

STUFFED ACORN SQUASH

2 acorn squash (1 to 1 1/2 lbs each)

1 large, tart red apple, diced

2 tablespoons chopped nuts

2 tablespoons packed brown sugar

1 tablespoon butter or margarine, melted

1. Heat over to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

2. Cut each squash in half lengthwise. Remove the seeds and fibers. Place the squash with the cut side up in an ungreased pan. Bake for 30 minutes.

3. In a small mixing bowl, combine the apple, nuts, brown sugar and melted butter. Spoon this mixture into the squash halves.

4. Return the squash to the over and continue baking for 30 minutes longer - or until the squash is tender.

TODAY’S TRIVIA

Today is Shamu Day. The first surviving killer whale born in captivity was born at Orlando’s Sea World on September 26, 1985. Shamu now lives at Sea World San Antonio.

Today is National Pancake Day and National Acorn Squash Day.

1956: It was Elvis Presley Day in his hometown of Tupelo, Mississippi.

1957: The musical "West Side Story" opened on Broadway.

1962: "The Beverly Hillbillies" debuted on CBS-TV, starring Buddy Ebsen, Irene Ryan, Donna Douglas, and Max Baer Jr. The show lasted nine seasons. The theme, "The Ballad of Jed Clampett," was recorded by Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs.

1964: Roy Orbison’s "Oh Pretty Woman" hit #1 in the U.S.

1969: "The Brady Bunch" premiered on ABC-TV.

TODAY’S SMILE

A man whose job was to punch the tickets of people as they entered a cinema, got fed up by people asking him “What's the time?”

So he thought of putting a stop to this nuisance. He bought a big clock and hung it on the wall behind him where everyone could see it.

But what happened? The people, after looking at the clock, began to ask him, “Is that clock correct?”

Just when we think we have one problem solved another one springs up elsewhere! Sometimes we have ourselves chained to clocks, watches and timekeeping. Time is important but we don't have to be its slave.

When God made time, there was plenty of it made.

TODAY’S REFLECTION

Those people who keep their faith until the end will be saved.

Matthew 24:13

Jesus doesn’t say if you succeed you will be saved. Or if you come out on top you will be saved. He says if you endure. An accurate rendering would be, “If you hang in there until the end…if you go the distance.”

Jesus gives you this assurance. Hang on. He’ll make sure you get home.

TODAY'S THOUGHT

The great use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it.

TODAY’S ACTION

Realize that in order to discover your true potential, you must help others discover theirs.

TODAY’S QUOTE

When people say to me: "How do you do so many things?" I often answer them without meaning to be cruel: "How do you do so little?" It seems to me that people have vast potential. Most people can do extraordinary things if they have the confidence or take the risks. Yet most people sit in front of the TV and treat life as if it goes on forever.

TODAY’S SMILE

You're never fully dressed without a smile!

So put a smile on your face and spread some happiness around this gloomy world!

Today I smiled, and all at once

Things didn't look so bad.

Today I shared with someone else,

A little bit of hope I had.

Today I sang a little song,

And felt my heart grow light.

I walked a happy little mile,

With not a cloud in sight.

Today I worked with what I had,

And longed for nothing more,

And what had seemed like only weeds,

Were flowers at my door

Today I loved a little more,

And complained a little less.

And in the giving of myself,

I forgot my weariness.

TODAY’S REFLECTION

...Let them first learn to practice piety...and to make some return to their parents...

1 Timothy 5:4

It doesn't have to be a monetary return. Parents long for kind words and actions. The widowed mother would so appreciate for her son to mow the lawn; parents or grandparents would like a night out with the children; a phone call on a special day would make a lonely heart so happy; a note saying "I love you" would thrill a lonely heart. These are not crippling obligations but privileges of love while one's parents and grandparents still live.

As some wit observed, love begins at home and it should return for a visit now and then.

TODAY’S ADVICE FROM THE OLD FARMER’S ALMANAC

Habits are first cobwebs and then cables.

September 24th is Harvest Home

In Europe and Britain, the conclusion of the harvest each autumn was once marked by great festivals of fun, feasting, and thanksgiving known as “Harvest Home.” It was also a time to hold elections, pay workers, and collect rents. These festivals usually took place around the time of the autumnal equinox. Certain ethnic groups in this country, particularly the Pennsylvania Dutch, have kept the tradition alive.

Happy Fall!

It’s….Piano Players Day

The piano was invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori in Florence, Italy sometime around 1700 - and was originally called a "harpsichord that plays soft and loud." It was a keyboard instrument that produced a stronger sound than the clavichord and allowed for more artistic expression than the harpsichord or the organ. Today we celebrate the most popular instrument in the whole world - plus more than 20 million people who are pianists. This includes all of us who can only play chopsticks!

1986: Congress designated the rose as America’s national flower.

TODAY’S SMILE

Start your day off with a great big smile because every day should be a GREAT DAY.

The Value of One

It was early morning. On the beach was an elderly man. He walked with a cane, carefully surveying the beach that the receding tide had left exposed. Every now and then he bent to pick something up and toss it into the ocean. I watch with fascination as he carefully scanned the beach before him.

It was then that I realized he was looking for starfish. Every time he saw one lying helpless in the sand, unable to get back to the ocean on his own, he would lovingly pick it up and toss it gently back into the sea.

Curious as to why he was doing this, I approached him. He told me, "The starfish are left behind after the tide goes out. If they don't get back into the ocean they will dry up and die beneath the hot summer sun."

"But there are endless miles of beach and there must be millions of starfish," I said. "Surely you don't think you can save them all. What difference can your efforts possibly make?" Slowly the old man bent over and picked up another starfish. As he tossed it into ocean he looked at me and said, "It makes a difference to that one."

We are called to be faithful in scanning those "beaches" and in making a difference to "that one" and "that one" and "that one" in the name of Christ. Always laugh when you can; it is cheap medicine. Merriment is a philosophy not well understood. It is the sunny side of existence.

Lord Byron

TODAY’S WORD

progeny noun [PROJ-ah-nee]

1. the immediate descendants of a person, animal, or plant: "I would like to create something my progeny will be proud of."

2. descendants or offspring considered collectively

3. the product or outcome of work and creative effort; a product

TODAY’S REFLECTION

Do not fret -- it only causes harm

Psalm 37:8b

Today's scripture gives wise advice. The Bible often cautions against the danger of fretting. When you begin to fret about something, you hurt yourself both mentally and physically. It is difficult to enjoy pleasant things, when the darkness of worry is clouding your mind.

It is possible for your blood pressure to rise when you are fretting. Your food doesn't digest properly and you can become ill.

When you realize that God only wants the best for you, your faith can keep you from fretting. Then your life is on the path to peace.

TODAY’S ADVICE FROM THE OLD FARMER’S ALMANAC

True love begins when nothing is looked for in return.

Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Q. What is the best place to put an outdoor thermometer?

A. For the most accurate reading, use a liquid-in-glass or a digital thermometer. Place it so that it is not in direct sunlight at any time. The shade of a tree and a north-facing porch are two good places. Place the thermometer four to six feet above the ground in an area where there is sufficient airflow. Finally, keep it protected from rain, snow, and ice.
