ON THE BRIGHT SIDE

0CTOBER 21ST, 2006

TODAY'S THOUGHT

Grow old along with me, the best is yet to be.

Robert Browning

TODAY’S ACTION

Fill your heart with strength and love for each other.

TODAY’S QUOTE

You don't choose your family. They are God's gift to you, as you are to them.

Desmond Tutu

HAPPY SATURDAY

Another weekend is here and as usual I'm sitting at the computer catching up on my reading and writing.  This morning's cup of coffee is just a little better than usual and I will hopefully have a couple more before I start in on the work that has piled up here all week.

I've been moving very slowly lately--things tend to take lots longer to do than they used to.  I think it is the sudden lack of sunshine here that's doing it.  I should have been a bear so I could hibernate and wake up again when Spring comes.

Have a great day everybody !

Another wonderful one on the Way !

Please pray for God's protection of our troops and HIS wisdom for their commanders

Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. I ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior

TODAY IS…CARAMEL APPLE DAY

And just what can we say about this? One of America's Favorite Treats - and American Dentists, too!

Here’s the instructions

6 small apples

1 package caramels (14 oz.)

1/2 cup chopped nuts

6 popsicle sticks

1) Line a cookie sheet with waxed paper. Empty nuts onto the paper and divide into six equal heaps. Leave as much space as possible between each heap. 2) Wash and dry the apples. Twist off the stems and push popsicle sticks half way onto the apples where the stems used to be. 3) Melt the caramels in the microwave or a saucepan over low heat. 4) Dip apples in the melted caramel to coat. Use a knife to help cover the whole apple. Place each apple, stick side up, onto a heap of nuts and roll over to cover. 5) Refrigerate until the caramel is firm, about 1/2 hour.

TODAY’S TRIVIA

TODAY IS SWEETEST DAY !

Now here is a day dedicated just for your sweetie. It exists as an opportunity for you to recognize that sweet and special someone. It doesn’t matter who that person is, or what their relation to you. They just have to be "sweet" in order to get a little recognition.

Herbert Birch Kingston, a Cleveland, Ohio philanthropist and candy company employee started Sweetest Day. He wanted to bring happiness to orphans, shut-ins and under-privileged. His intent was to show these people that they were not forgotten.

In 1922, he started this holiday by giving candy and small gifts. He often used movie stars to distribute the gifts. The popularity of this holiday quickly spread.

Today, is celebrated with loved ones and friends. However, we encourage you to follow the intent of the original holiday, and find ways to give candy and small gifts to those in need.

Today is National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day.

Today is National Caramel Apple Day.

Today is Take Time to Stop and Watch the Sunset Day

1879: Thomas Edison demonstrated the first practical incandescent electric lamp. It burned out after 14 hours.

1957 - The Elvis Presley movie, Jailhouse Rock, opened in U.S. theatres. The flick also starred Judy Tyler, Mickey Shaughnessy, Vaughn Taylor, Jennifer Holden, Dean Jones and Anne Neyland and is considered by many to be Elvis’ best film.

1997 - Elton John’s tribute to Princess Diana, Candle in the Wind 1997, was declared by The Guinness Book of Records to be the biggest-selling single record of all time.

TODAY’S SMILE

A group of country neighbors wanted to get together on a regular basis and socialize. As a result, about 10 couples formed a dinner club and agreed to meet for dinner at a different neighbors' house each month.

When it came time for Jimmy and Susie Brown to have the dinner at their house, like many women, Susie wanted to outdo all the others and prepare a meal that was the best that any of them had ever lapped a lip over.

A few days before the big event, Susie got out her cookbook and decided to have mushroom smothered steak. When she went to the store to buy some mushrooms, she found the price for a small can was more than she wanted to pay.

She then told her husband, "We aren't going to have mushrooms, because they are too expensive." He said, "Why don't you go down in the pasture and pick some of those mushrooms? There are plenty of them right in the creek bed." She said, "No, I don't want to do that, because I have heard that wild mushrooms are poison."

He then said, "I don't think so. I see the varmints eating them all the time and it never has affected them." After thinking about this, Susie decided to give this a try and got in the pickup and went down in the pasture and picked some.

She brought the wild mushrooms back home and washed them, sliced and diced them to get them ready to go over her smothered steak. Then she went out on the back porch and got Ol' Spot's (the yard dog) bowl and gave him a double handful. She even put some bacon grease on them to make them tasty. Ol' Spot didn't slow down until he had eaten every bite.

All morning long, Susie watched him and the wild mushrooms didn't seem to affect him, so she decided to use them. The meal was a great success, and Susie even hired a lady from town to come out and help her serve. She had on a white apron and a little cap on her head. It was first class.

After everyone had finished, they all began to kick back and relax and socialize. The men were visiting and the women started to gossip a bit. About this time, the lady from town came in from the kitchen and whispered in Susie's ear. She said, "Mrs. Brown, Spot just died."

With this news, Susie went into hysterics. After she finally calmed down, she called the doctor and told him what had happened. The doctor said, "It's bad, but I think we can take care of it. I will call for an ambulance and I will be there as quick as I can get there. We will pump out everyone's stomach and everything will be fine. Just keep them all there and keep them calm."

It wasn't long until they could hear the wail of the siren as the ambulance was coming down the road. When they got there, the EMTs got out with their suitcases and a stomach pump and the doctor arrived shortly thereafter. One by one, they took each person into the master bedroom and pumped out their stomach. After the last one was finished, the doctor came out and said, "I think everything will be fine now, and he left."

They were all looking pretty peaked sitting around the living room, and about this time, the town lady came in and said, "You know, that fellow that ran over Ol' Spot never even stopped."

TODAY’S REFLECTION

And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

Matthew 28:20

Sometimes we could be in the midst of a crowd of people and feel as alone as someone stranded in the desert

Every day has a lot of little blessings, if you look for them.

If you choose to take the time to count your blessings, you won't have an hour, or even a minute left to be lonely.
