ON THE BRIGHT SIDE

 AUGUST 24TH, 2006

TODAY'S THOUGHT

There is no happiness but there are moments of happiness.

Spanish Proverb

TODAY’S ACTION

The proverb today sums it up best when it tells us that there is no lasting happiness in this world. We are only travelling through. We can and will encounter many moments of happiness on that journey. It is up to us to seize them and to celebrate them.

TODAY’S QUOTE

For every beauty there is an eye somewhere to see it. For every truth there is an ear somewhere to hear it. For every love there is a heart somewhere to receive it.

HAPPY THURSDAY !

I had a great time at the fair last night with DD and her hubby. Of course the first thing we did when we got there was eat…and eat somemore. We visited DS#5 and his wife at their booth. He is doing caricatures and was quite busy.I’ll have pictures for you to see in my Thursday morning GOOD MORNING SUNSHINE journal entry.

This morning I’m not really very awake, but I’ll still be off to work shortly. I hope this is a nice short day – yesterday was one of those loooong 10 hour ones.

Have a great day all ! Another wonderful one on the Way!

Please pray for God's protection of our troops and HIS wisdom for their commanders.

Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. I ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.

GOD BLESS YOU !

TODAY IS… CAN OPENER DAY

Tin cans were developed in 1810 for Royal Navy rations, but they forgot to invent a can opener. For years, soldiers opened cans with bayonets or rifle fire. In 1824, the cans carried by Arctic explorer, William Perry, carried the instructions, "Cut round top with hammer and chisel". A can opener like we know today wasn't patented until 1870. It had a cutting wheel that rolled around the rim of the can. It was improved in 1924 when a feed wheel was added. This method was used for the first electric can openers that went on the market in 1931 - and that same basic design is still used today.

TODAY’S TRIVIA

Saint Bartholomew Feast Day -. If his feast day is fair and clear, a prosperous autumn is almost certain.

1456: Printing of the Gutenberg Bible completed

1869 - Cornelius Swarthout of Troy, New York received a patent for the waffle iron, a “device to bake waffles.” He didn’t waffle about putting his invention to good use. It quickly became a popular appliance. You would heat up the waffle iron on the old coal stove - and later, the gas range - pour the batter on the griddle, close the cover and after a few minutes, flip the griddle in its little groove, and cook the other side of the waffle. Not quite as convenient as our electric waffle irons, but, you can be sure, if it’s Swarthout!

1909: Workers start pouring concrete for the Panama Canal.

TODAY’S SMILE

Start your day off with a great big smile because every day should be a GREAT DAY.

One night, a twin-engine puddle jumper was flying somewhere above New Jersey. There were five people on board: the pilot, Michael Jordan, Bill Gates, a Tibetan monk, and a hippie.

Suddenly a fire broke out and the passenger cabin began to fill with smoke. The cockpit door opened, and the pilot burst into the compartment. "Gentlemen," he said, "I have good news and bad news.

The bad news is that we're about to crash in New Jersey. The good news is that there are four parachutes, and I have one of them!" With that, the pilot threw open the door and jumped from the plane.

Michael Jordan was on his feet in a flash. "Gentlemen," he said, "I am the world's greatest athlete. The world needs great athletes. I think the world's greatest athlete should have a parachute!" With these words, he grabbed one of the remaining parachutes, and hurtled through the door and into the night.

Bill Gates rose and said, "Gentlemen, I am the world's smartest man. The world needs smart men. I think the world's smartest man should have a parachute, too." He grabbed one, and out he jumped.

The old Tibetan monk and the hippie looked at one another. After a moment, the monk spoke. "My son," he said, "I have lived a long and satisfying life and have known the bliss of True Enlightenment. You have your whole life ahead of you. You take a parachute, and I will go down with the plane."

The hippie said, "Hey, don't sweat it, pop. The world's smartest man just jumped out wearing my backpack."

TODAY’S REFLECTION

If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

Romans 12:18

Sometimes families -- even families in the Bible -- are messy. But in spite of people's selfishness, schemes, and jealousies, God works through them. Reading the Bible gives me hope that God can and will work through and within even my messy family God calls us to be peacemakers -- especially in our families.
