ON THE BRIGHT SIDE

MARCH 22ND, 2007

TODAY'S THOUGHT

When you get up in the morning, you have two choices - either to be happy or to be unhappy. Just choose to be happy.

Dr. Norman Vincent Peale

TODAY’S ACTION

Welcome the freshness of morning and the opportunities that await you with the start of a new day.

TODAY’S QUOTE

For one who reads, there is no limit to the number of lives that may be lived, for fiction, biography, and history offer an inexhaustible number of lives in many parts of the world, in all periods of time.

Louis L'Amour

HAPPY THURSDAY

Yesterday morning it was 27 degrees when I left for work but by the time I got home from work it was about 56 degrees. It felt heavenly! I even opened the back door window to let in some fresh air !

Today we’re supposed to be in the 60’s but a little more rain is headed our way.

I just about have my suitcase packed for my long weekend and am nearly sure I have thought of everything I need, but I’ll probably forget something.

The long range forecast for where the ‘Sunshine Babes ‘ live says it will be in the 70’s. I’m looking forward to that.

Have a great day all ! Another wonderful one on the Way !

Please pray for God's protection of our troops and HIS wisdom for their commanders.

Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. I ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.

25 WORDS

God, I thank You for today, for the ways You will bless me, and for the ways that I will serve others in Your name

TODAY IS…ROLLER COASTER DAY

In 1884, LaMarcus A. Thompson built a ride at New York's Coney Island to bring people out of the local beer gardens. The tracks carried individual cars that climbed 15 feet in the air and zoomed along at 4 miles per hour. People swarmed to Coney Island to try this novelty for a nickel a ride. Today, the fastest roller coaster is the Alpengeist at Busch Gardens, Williamsburg, VA. It goes 67 mph - and it probably costs more than a nickel.

TODAY’S SMILE WORDS…

Scott and Peter had applied for jobs at a large company and had to take an intelligence test. Though both of them found the test a breeze, except that they admitted to being momentarily stumped by the final question:

"Name a 14 letter word for someone in charge of a plant."

(Can you the reader answer this one? . . .)

(Now continue . . . )

"How did you answer that one?" asked Scott. "I thought it was tough at first . . . then I thought of Superintendent."

"I think I got it right too," Pete said. "But I wrote down Horticulturist."

One More

So a 2-letter word has a hundred completely different meanings. So what is this stuff about English being easy? There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meaning than any other two-letter word, and that is "UP."

It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we waken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP?

Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends and we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen.

We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car. At other times the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses.

To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special. Now this UP is really confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.

We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look UP the word UP in the dictionary.

In a desk size dictionary, the word up, takes UP almost 1/4th the page and definitions add UP to about thirty. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used.

It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, it wets UP the earth. When it doesn't rain for a while, things dry UP.

One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now my time is UP, so.............I'll give UP and shut UP.....!

TODAY’S WORD

 Piliferous

(py-LIF-uhr-uhs) adjective

Having or producing hair. [From Latin pilus (hair).]

People spend millions trying to grow it. Others spend even more to get rid of it. Some do both, though on different parts of their bodies. We can get in other people's hair (to annoy). We let our hair down (relax). We split hairs (make petty distinctions).

Things can make our hair stand on end (terrify), or we might be having a bad hair day (an unpleasant day). Sometimes literally. I have seen my niece in tears at a family wedding just because she felt her hair wasn't done as well as she had hoped. (I know what some of you are saying to yourselves, "Just because?")

Our hair grows. We cut it. And in between we spend countless hours on it.

TODAY’S REFLECTION

Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with each other

Mark 9:50

Salt was very important in Jesus' day because the people had no knowledge of refrigeration. Salt was not only used for seasoning, but also for preserving food. Salt had to be kept pure or it would not be useful for either of these things.

I believe that he was telling them how important it was for them to avoid being tempted by the ways of the world, so their "saltiness" would lead others to a tastier, purer life and help them to "preservation of life" in eternity.

Dear Lord, help us to reflect your love and joy to everyone we meet today.

Amen.
