CHRISTMAS SEASON

It is still the Christmas season in the church. We are still celebrating the saving power of God in the coming of Christ. The Psalm for today sings the joyful song of praise for all the Lord has done

PSALM 98:1

All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation by our God. Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands; break into song; sing praise.

All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God

St. Basil the Great

In celebrating the feasts of St. Basil of Caesarea and St. Gregory Nazianzen on the same day, the Church extols a virtue which she has always esteemed, friendship. The friendship between Basil and Gregory was admirable

The staple at every Greek home is that of the St. Basil's Cake, or Vasilopita. The cutting of this special cake will reveal what the new year holds in store for the family, and the one who gets the silver coin that is hidden in the cake will be the lucky person of the year

HAPPY MONDAY

Today is a paid Holiday from work so I’m off and at home to finished de-Christmas-ing my house. So far I’ve got the kitchen, living room and upstairs done. Today is the dining room and it has a lot in it. The tree and the Christmas town on the hutch shelves will take most of the day to put away. If I don’t get finished, I won’t complain…I still have all week to work at it.

Next Sunday we celebrate the feast of Epiphany and that’s the official end of the Season. If we count all the weeks of Advent and the weeks of Christmas, instead of just Christmas day, I’d say we had just about 2 months of a very fulfilling celebration.

Have a great day all ! Another wonderful one on the Way !

TODAY'S SMILE

A parish priest was being honored at his retirement dinner after 25 years in the parish. A leading local politician and member of the congregation was chosen to make the presentation and give a little speech at the dinner.

He was delayed so the priest decided to say his own few words while they waited. "I got my first impression of the parish from the first confession I heard here. I thought I had been assigned to a terrible place.

The very first person who entered my confessional told me he had stolen a television set and, when stopped by the police, had almost murdered the officer. He had stolen money from his parents, embezzled from his place of business, had an affair with his boss's wife, taken illegal drugs, and gave VD to his sister.

I was appalled. But as the days went on I knew that my people were not all like that and I had, indeed, come to a fine parish full of good and loving people.

.. Just as the priest finished his talk, the politician arrived full of apologies at being late. He immediately began to make the presentation and give his talk.

"I'll never forget the first day our parish priest arrived," said the politician. "In fact, I had the honor of being the first one to go to him in confession."

Moral: DON'T EVER BE LATE

From the news…

It's been a terrific year for medical research studies.

In 2005, medical studies showed drinking red wine can reduce the risk of heart attack; a pint of beer can trigger the growth of new brain cells; pizza sauce can help fight prostate cancer; chocolate helps preserve longterm memory; white wine is good for the lungs; butter helps prevent asthma; cheese is good for your eyes.

If there are any medical researchers out there -- could you please get to work and find a reason why I can enjoy eggnog

TODAY'S WORD

dyspepsia • \dis-PEP-shuh\ noun

1 : indigestion 2 : ill humor : disgruntlement

When people get indigestion, they are often affected by nausea, heartburn, and gas—things that can cause the world's greatest gastronome to curse the world's most delectable dishes. So, it is no wonder that "dyspepsia," a word for indigestion, has also come to mean "ill humor" or "disgruntlement

TODAY'S REFLECTION

We have different gifts, according to the grace given us

Romans 12:6

We each have our different DNA: Different Natures All! Just as fingerprints are different, so is each temperament and each physique. This is what makes life so profound and provocative. How dull our lives would be if we all had the same.

In choosing His twelve disciples, Jesus chose across the board of temperaments and physiques. They were busy, ordinary men who probably wondered why they were chosen for the distinct privilege

We, too, have been chosen that His image can be stamped onto our hearts. So let's not be discouraged at our lack of all ten talents, but give as we have been given by the Master.
