TODAY’S QUOTE

Advice is like snow; the softer it falls, the longer it dwells upon, and the deeper it sinks into the mind.

Samuel Coleridge

HAPPY THURSDAY !

This week is very slowly coming to an end. It’s been pretty quiet around here and other than the big news of the week (Grand’babe’ # 11’s birth) there is not much to write home about.

I got my car washed yesterday for the first time in ages, and found a nice ding in the back of my car that wasn’t there before. It looks like a shopping cart or something sharp hit it.

The weather continues to be beautiful and I’m loving’ it!

Have a great day all ! Another wonderful one on the Way !

TODAY IS…SHOO FLY DAY

Shoo fly pie comes to us from our German and Pennsylvania Dutch ancestors. It's a molasses pie that has a wet bottom, cake-like middle, and crumb topping. People used to place the pies in their kitchen windows to cool. The molasses attracted lots of flies, so they were always saying... "Shoo Fly!". They also used to eat this pie for breakfast.

SHOO FLY PIE

The earlier Dutchman used barrel molasses in this recipe. The closest equivalent on the market today, is Brer Rabbit. Other molasses will bake crunchy, almost like taffy.

1 8" unbaked pie shell Topping:

1 1/2 C flour

1/2 C sugar 1 tsp. baking powder

1/2 tsp salt 1/4 C shortening

Bottom: 1/2 C Brer Rabbit molasses (orange label, mild flavor)

1/2 C. boiling water

1/2 tsp. baking soda

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). 2. Mix all topping ingredients together, squeezing and crumbling to make crumbs the size of small peas. Set aside. 3. In another bowl, dissolve baking soda in boiling water. Add molasses. Stir well. 4. Pour into unbaked pie shell & add crumb topping. DO NOT BLEND THE TOPPING WITH THE MOLASSES MIXTURE. 5. Bake at 400 degrees F for 15 minutes; then at 350 degrees F for 35 minutes. Pie will keep well in the fridge for a week, or it can be frozen

TODAY’S SMILE

No Nose

A few years ago a gentleman who had lost his nose was invited out to tea. "My dear," said the old lady of the house to her little daughter, "I want you to be very particular and make no remarks about Mr. Jenkins' nose.

Gathered around the table, everything was going well; the child peeped about, looking rather puzzled, and at last startled the table: "Ma, why did you tell me to say nothing about Mr. Jenknis' nose?

He doesn't have one

TODAY’S REFLECTION

Christ Jesus…did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant.

Philippians 2:5-7

He humbled himself. He went from commanding angels to sleeping in the straw. From holding stars to clutching Mary’s finger. The palm that held the universe took the nail of a soldier.

Why? Because that’s what love does. It puts the beloved before itself.
