TODAY IS...SUGAR COOKIE DAY

Sugar cookies are the most versatile dessert you'll ever bake. They can be cut into any shape. They can be frosted or left plain. They can be decorated to fit any holiday or just made for fun. The only problem is keeping them in the cookie jar because they disappear so fast!

1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 large egg
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon lemon extract (optional)

Frosting:
1 cup confectioners (powdered) sugar
5-6 teaspoons water
1-2 drops food coloring (optional
  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease cookie sheets.

2. In a large bowl, mix the butter, sugar, egg and lemon extract.

3. Stir in the rest of the ingredients and mix well. Divide the dough into two parts. Chill 1 - 2 hours so it will be easy to handle.

4. Roll half the dough out on a floured surface until it is 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. Cut with cookie cutters. Keep the other half chilled until ready to use. Place the cookies 1 inch apart on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake 7 to 8 minutes or until no indentation remains when touched.

5. To Frost: Blend theconfectioners sugar and water in a small bowl. Add food coloring if desired. For a thin layer of frosting, brush on while the cookies are still warm. For a thicker frosting, let the cookies cool and frost with a knife.

 TODAY'S SMILE

Just before his operation, a man was wheeling himself frantically down the hall of the hospital in his wheelchair.

A nurse stopped him and asked, "What's the matter?"

He said, "I heard the nurse say, 'It's a very simple operation, don't worry, I'm sure it will be all right.'"

"She was just trying to comfort you, what's so frightening about that?"

She wasn't talking to me. She was talking to the doctor

When my father-in-law passed away, we had to clear out his home. We discarded many items and sold some others, but my husband decided to keep the beautiful but very heavy antique dining-room set. Our teenaged son helped us wrestle the set into our pickup truck. It took the whole day, but finally the table, chairs, and china cabinet were sitting in our own dining room.

"Just think," I said as I admired the furniture while my son sat resting. "This set is 100 years old. And one of these days, it will belong to you."

"Oh, no!" he replied with a stricken look on his face.
You mean I'm going to have to move this thing AGAIN

TODAY'S SHORT STORY

Author Joseph Campbell often talked about "following your bliss." I heard of a bus driver in Chicago who does just that.

He sings while he drives. That's right . . . SINGS! And I don't mean he sings softly to himself, either. He sings so that the whole bus can hear!
All day long he drives and sings.

He was once interviewed on Chicago television. He said that he is not actually a bus driver. "I'm a professional singer," he asserted. "I only drive the bus to get a captive audience every single day."

His "bliss" is not driving a bus, though that may be a source of enjoyment for some people. His bliss is singing. And the supervisors at the Chicago Transit Authority are perfectly happy about the whole arrangement. You see, people line up to ride his bus. They even let other busses pass by so they can ride with the "singing bus driver." They love it!

Here is a man who believes he knows why he was put here on earth. For him, it is to make people happy. And the more he sings, the more people he makes happy! He has found a way to align his purpose in living with his occupation. By following his bliss, he is actually living the kind of life he believes he was meant to live.

Not everybody can identify a purposein life. But when you do, and when you pursue it, you will be living the kind of life you feel you were meant to live. And chances are . . . you will be happy.

TODAY'S REFLECTION

You must encourage one another each day. And you must keep on while there is still a time that can be called 'today.' If you don't, then sin may fool some of you and make you stubborn.

Hebrews 3:13

Encouragement is one of the greatest gifts one can give and it costs absolutely nothing.  A few encouraging words can make someone's day. And you'll be surprised at the joy it brings into your life. Life can be filled with sunshine for both our neighbors, and ourselves when we hold out our hand instead of pointing a finger
