BACK TO WORK !

Is it just me or are the weekends going by faster ? It seemed like I just arrived at the camper and then it was time to leave for home again. Maybe it is just that I don’t want to see the summer end.

This week the weather is going up and down like a roller coaster. Today we’ll get up to 80 degrees while tomorrow our high will be 70. We do have some showers coming in Tuesday and that is why the temp is dropping they say.

On the calendar this week besides work is my Thursday evening Bible Study, so it looks like I’ll have a few evenings to get something done around home. I’m hoping to get started on my fall decorating. It’s time to put away summer and get out some of the colorful fall things to brighten up this old house. The days of sunshine will be fewer and the nights longer.

While at the park one day, a woman sat down next to a man on a bench near a playground. "That's my son over there," she said, pointing to a little boy in a red sweater who was gliding down the slide. "He's a fine looking boy," the man said. "That's my son on the swing in the blue sweater."

Then, looking at his watch, he called to his son. "What do you say we go, Todd?" Todd pleaded, "Just five more minutes, Dad. Please? Just five more minutes." The man nodded and Todd continued to swing to his heart's content. Minutes passed and the father stood and called again to his son. "Time to go now?" Again Todd pleaded, "Five more minutes, Dad. Just five more minutes." The man smiled and said, "O.K."

"My, you certainly are a patient father," the woman responded. The man smiled and then said, "My older son Tommy was killed by a drunk driver last year while he was riding his bike near here. I never spent much time with Tommy and now I 'd give anything for just five more minutes with him.

I've vowed not to make the same mistake with Todd. He thinks he has five more minutes to swing. The truth is, I get Five more minutes to watch him play."

The majority of us lead quiet, unheralded lives as we pass through this world. There will most likely be no tickertape parades for us, no monuments created in our honor. But that does not lessen our possible impact, for there are scores of people waiting for someone just like us to come along; people who will appreciate our compassion, our encouragement, who will need our unique talents. Someone who will live a happier life merely because we took the time to share what we had to give. Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. It's overwhelming to consider the continuous opportunities there are to make our love felt.

The widow's offering in our scripture reading today said that she believed in the work of God. The work of the temple was important to her and she wanted to support it. Doubtless, it was with pleasure that she dropped in her coins for she knew she was part of something bigger than herself…

There is a certain dignity about being able to give to something you believe in. It says that we are not simply takers but we are givers. We are all born with this need to give There was a reason that the widow spent her last few coins on the work of God rather than on herself. Perhaps she had discovered that valuable secret of her need to give, and she found peace in her giving. I hope each one of us will also find that peace http://www.devotions.net
