TODAY'S THOUGHT

The great use of life is to spend it on something that will outlast it

James Truslow Adams

TODAY'S ACTION

Do not desire what you do not need

TODAY'S QUOTE

Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop to look around once in a while you could miss it.

From the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off

ADVENT

In the midst of our busy preparations and planning, will we remember to still our heart and wait for the Christ child?

Preparing our houses, and gifts, and tables for Christmas is not enough. We must prepare our hearts for the one who is coming. This is the gift of Advent - permission to slow down and wait.

Why not get ready for your thank you notes now? Set up a little spot in the house with your stamps, pens and envelopes. Or you can make a sample on the computer and then personalize each one later

Resurrect St. Nicholas Day to celebrate the real-life story that lies behind Santa Claus. Some cultures celebrate by filling shoes or stocking with candy and other treats on December 6, the traditional feast day of St. Nicholas (who once threw bags of money down a chimney to help a poor mans three children enjoy a better life).

Open one family Christmas gift perhaps a CD or book that well all enjoy through the season. Recall St. Nicholas’s secret act of Christian love

TODAY IS...ST. NICHOLAS DAY

St Nicholas was a Christian priest, born in 280 AD, in Tukey. He was a wealthy man and traveled the country helping people, giving gifts of money and presents. His gifts were given late at night so his identity would remain secret.

He was eventually named the patron saint of children. The name Santa Claus was derived from the Dutch "Sinter Klass" pronunciation of St Nicholas. Early Dutch settlers in New York brought their traditions of St Nicholas.

As children from other countries tried to pronunce Sinter Klass, this soon became Santa Klass, which was settled as Santa Claus

TODAY'S REFLECTION

Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things; but only one thing is needed

Luke 10:41,42

This is the verse for the harassed wife and mother who thinks she can't drop the chores long enough to sit at Jesus' feet for a moment of reverence and affection.

Keeping the house clean and meals on the table are necessary, but perhaps Jesus was telling Martha she should simplify her life; there was something more important: love.

Within that word love is summed up the rest of our duties.

First, we must break bread daily with the Bread of

Life, Jesus, through reading His Word. (a very good thought for these busy days of preparation)

The prayers of an old man are the only contributions left in his power

Thomas Jefferson, Letter to Mrs. Morgan, 1822
