FOR SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13TH, 2007

ON THE BRIGHT SIDE

 OCTOBER 13TH, 2OO7

TODAY'S THOUGHT

Money will buy: A bed but not sleep, Books but not brains, Food but not appetite, Finery but not beauty, A house but not a home, Medicine but not health, Luxuries but not happiness, Amusements but not happiness, A crucifix but not a Savior, A church but not heaven

TODAY’S ACTION

Believe in what you can become

TODAY’S QUOTE

Love many, hate few, learn to paddle your own canoe.

American Proverb

HAPPY SATURDAY !!

I think I’m ready to travel this morning ! It was a very good thing that I took the car in on Friday. It had a broken rear spring that was just hanging there and if it would have let loose it would have punctured my tire. So now everything has been checked out and I hope I’m ready to go.

Our weather promises to be sunny and in the 60’s today and tomorrow. It’ll be a great day with the campers. It’s always fun to hike in the woods and enjoy the fresh air. I’ll come home smelling like a campfire, but that’s not a bad thing at all.

Have a great day all ! Another wonderful one on the Way !

TODAY’S PRAYERS

Please pray for God's protection of our troops and HIS wisdom for their commanders.

Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. I ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.

25 WORDS

God, I thank You for today, for the ways You will bless me, and for the ways that I will serve others in Your name

TODAY IS…U.S. NAVY DAY

NO LIMIT…

NO COMPROMISE…

NO PROBLEM

In the 1970s, the "birthday" of the Continental Navy was found to be October 13, 1775, and so CNO Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt worked with the Navy League to define that as the new date of Navy Day. Navy Day continues to be celebrated

Wishing you a great U.S Navy Day !

TODAY’S TRIVIA

Today is National Nuzzling Day

Today is White House Day. The cornerstone to the White House was laid on this date in 1792. Designed by James Hoban, the presidential residence was constructed at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest in Washington, DC. President John Adams and his family moved in in November 1800

Today is National Yorkshire Pudding Day

Today is Newspaper Carrier Day

1775 - The second Continental Congress gave the okay for its young country to acquire ships and form what is now the United States Navy.

1903 - Beginning this night, and for 192 performances, Babes in Toyland entertained youngsters of all ages in New York City. Toyland is just one of Victor Herbert’s timeless operettas

1957 - Two superstars introduced a new car on ABC-TV. Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra joined forces in an hourlong special that turned out to be a big ratings hit. Too bad the Edsel, the car that Ford Motor Company was introducing, didn’t fare as well.

Why are so many weathervanes topped by the silhouette of a rooster? To paraphrase a Bob Dylan song lyric, "You don't need a chicken to tell which way the wind blows."

Nevertheless, when you look at many weathervanes, a rooster points the way. What's he doing up there, predicting fowl weather? Believe it or not there's a religious origin to this meteorological icon.

In the Middle Ages a Papal edict decreed that the image should appear on top of churches as a kind of wake-up call to parishioners that they should attend services. The image was actually a reference to Peter's betrayal of Jesus, who said, "I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me."

The faithful, by attending church, would show that they were not betraying Christ by turning away from Him. Eventually the image became secularized, appearing atop other kinds of buildings on weathervanes.

TODAY’S SMILE

A farmer wins the ten million dollar lottery. Afterwards, he was interviewed by a newspaper reporter. He was asked what he is going to do with all that money.

"Oh, I guess the first thing I'll do is go and pay a few bills"

"And what about the rest?" the reporter asks.

Farmer shrugs. "Well, I guess they'll just have to wait."

One more…

A firefighter is working outside the station when he notices a little girl in a little red wagon with small ladders on the sides, a garden hose coiled in the middle, and wearing a firefighter's helmet.

The wagon is being pulled by her dog and her cat. The firefighter takes a closer look. "That sure is a nice fire-truck," the fire fighter says with high regard. Thanks," says girl says!

The firefighter notices the girl has tied the wagon to her dog's collar and to the cat's tail. "Little lady," the firefighter says, "I don't want to tell you how to run your rig, but if you were to tie that rope around the cat's collar, I think you could go faster."

The little girl replies thoughtfully

But then I would have no siren

TODAY’S WORD

truckle \TRUHK-uhl\, intransitive verb:

To yield or bend obsequiously to the will of another; to act in a subservient manner.

Truckle is from truckle in truckle bed (a low bed on wheels that may be pushed under another bed; also called a trundle bed), in reference to the fact that the truckle bed on which the pupil slept was rolled under the large bed of the master.

The ultimate source of the word is Greek trokhos, "a wheel."

TODAY’S REFLECTION

Visit orphans and widows in their trouble.

James 1:27

God cares about the plight of the poor and has a special place in His heart for orphans and widows. Malachi wrote that God would judge those who, having no fear of God, exploit widows and orphans (3:5).

Instead of taking advantage of the weak, we as Christians are admonished to help those in need. Believers should care for those God cares about. We should look for opportunities to provide financial and emotional support for those who have lost a spouse or have been orphaned from a parent’s care

As James tells us, a mark of true spirituality is to "visit orphans and widows in their trouble" (1:27).
