It was a beautiful day here Monday and we’re supposed to have another coming our way today. Temps in the low 80’s with low humidity and blue skies.

Most of my work transferred over to the new computer at work just fine. However, there are still a few rough spots to straighten out, hopefully that will get done today. Thankfully it is all still on the old computer, they just have to figure out how to get it to transfer correctly.

We’ll see…

Fossil records of roses date back 3.5 billion years. Jumping ahead to the 1600s, colonists brought the rose to America making it the oldest European plant grown in the US. By the time they returned from their honeymoon, they were inspired to create a cartoon character, 'Woody Woodpecker'. Walter drew the pictures. Gracie became Woody's voice.

It is important to let others know the Good News of Jesus Christ. Some people use the direct question, "Are you saved?" Others claim that they don't need to say anything, and just let their lives demonstrate joy in the Lord.

But I believe that Philip shows us the best way to talk about the Lord. Philip took the time to help someone looking for answers. Philip saw a stranger who had questions and he took time to help him. Time is valuable, and all of us hate to lose precious minutes from a busy day. But if we are available to help someone who is searching, a lost sheep may come into the fold.

We are back to work today!

It looks like the weather will be in the low 80’s and sunny here for a few days. The big news at work is that I have a new computer there. Starting today I’ll be getting used to the new Vista Program. I’m not sure how much difference this will make in what I do, but I’ll find out, that’s for sure.

The week ahead should be a quiet one here, nothing on the calendar for the evenings anyway. I will appreciate the time to catch up on things here.

A handsome, middle-aged man walked quietly into the cafe and sat down. Before he ordered, he couldn't help but notice a group of younger men at the table next to him. It was obvious they were making fun of something about him, and it wasn't until he remembered he was wearing a small pink ribbon on the lapel of his suit that he became aware of what the joke was all about.

The man brushed off the reaction as ignorance, but the smirks began to get to him. He looked one of the rude men square in the eye, placed his hand beneath the ribbon and asked, quizzically, "This?".

With that the men all began to laugh out loud. The man he addressed said, as he fought back laughter, "Hey, sorry man, but we were just commenting on how pretty your little ribbon looks against your blue jacket!"

The middle-aged man calmly motioned for the joker to come over to his table, and invited him to sit down. As uncomfortable as he was, the guy obliged, not really sure why. In a soft voice, the middle-aged man said, "I wear this ribbon to bring awareness about breast cancer. I wear it in my mother's honor." "Oh, sorry dude.

She died of breast cancer?"

"No, she didn't.

She's alive and well. But her breasts nourished me as an infant, and were a soft resting place for my head when I was scared or lonely as a little boy. I'm very grateful for my mother's breasts, and her health."

"Umm," the stranger replied, "yeah."

"And I wear this ribbon to honor my wife," the middle-aged man went on. "And she's okay, too?", the other guy asked, "Oh, yes. She's fine. Her breasts nurtured and nourished our beautiful daughter 23 years ago. I am grateful for my wife's breasts, and for her health."

"Uh huh. And I guess you wear it to honor your daughter, also?"

"No. It's too late to honor my daughter by wearing it now. My daughter died of breast cancer one month ago. She thought she was too young to have breast cancer, so when she accidentally noticed a small lump, she ignored it. She thought that since it wasn't painful, it must not be anything to worry about."

Shaken and ashamed, the now sober stranger said, "Oh, man, I'm so sorry mister." "So, in my daughter's memory, too, I proudly wear this little ribbon, which allows me the opportunity to enlighten others.

Now, go home and talk to your wife and your daughters, your mother and your friends. And here . . ." The middle-aged man reached in his pocket and handed the other man a little pink ribbon.

The guy looked at it,slowly raised his head and asked, "Can ya help me put it on?"

As parents, we spend 20 years or so preparing for the day when our babies take their wings and fly on their own. It's a scary time for both parents and children.

Have we prepared them sufficiently? Are they strong enough to fly on their own? We've been responsible for them since the day they were born -- to provide for them and protect them.

It's hard to let go, and yet we know that we must. When we experience those feelings, it helps to know that if they are Christians, then they have not completely "left the nest". Though our nest may be empty, they are safe in another nest.

May you find comfort and security in the nest of our Lord.

Here we are the end of another work week. I fear it will be a long day at work today as one of my bosses is taking a vacation day. I never know if the other one will be in or not. We’ll see…

After work this evening I go with DS#5 and his wife to visit with DS#1 And DS#4 and their families who are vacationing at Cedar Point this weekend. It’s only about 45 minutes away, so we’ll drive over and visit with them for awhile. We’ll be praying for nice weather for our vacationers. (of course we’ve got a chance of thunderstorms today too)

TODAY IS…SHOO FLY PIE DAY

Shoo fly pie comes to us from our German and Pennsylvania Dutch ancestors. It's a molasses pie that has a wet bottom, cake-like middle, and crumb topping. People used to place the pies in their kitchen windows to cool. The molasses attracted lots of flies, so they were always saying... "Shoo Fly!". They also used to eat this pie for breakfast.

1 8" unbaked pie shell

Topping:

1 1/2 C flour

 1/2 C sugar

1 tsp. baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 C shortening

Bottom: 1/2 C Brer Rabbit molasses (orange label, mild flavor)

1/2 C. boiling water

 1/2 tsp. baking soda

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).

2. Mix all topping ingredients together, squeezing and crumbling to make crumbs the size of small peas. Set aside.

3. In another bowl, dissolve baking soda in boiling water. Add molasses. Stir well.

4. Pour into unbaked pie shell & add crumb topping. DO NOT BLEND THE TOPPING WITH THE MOLASSES MIXTURE.

5. Bake at 400 degrees F for 15 minutes; then at 350 degrees F for 35 minutes. Pie will keep well in the fridge for a week, or it can be frozen.

HAPPY THURSDAY!

Today DS#4 and family will be traveling up to Ohio! They along and DS#1 and his family will be going to our nearby amusement park for a 3 day weekend trip. Friday evening I hope to go with DS#5 and his wife up to see them all after work.

 It will be a short visit, but it seems ages since I’ve seen them all and I do miss getting together with my family.

Saturday and Sunday will be spent with my Dad as usual. The weeks seem to be flying by and one day seems to blend with the next.

I’ll be praying for all the travelers and for DS#6 as he may finally get his MRI on the sprained/broken (?) ankle today.

I truly don’t know what is going on with my e-mail. I always send this newsletter to myself just to make sure it gets out, and again yesterday I saw that it didn’t arrive in my mail. Hopefully whatever the problem is will straighten up soon. And hopefully you are receiving my daily e-mail. It really does go out every day. If I do have to miss, I’ll let you know ahead of time.

In 1829, two men patented portable instruments based on the same principle - free reeds activated by a keyboard and a set of bellows. Sir Charles Wheatstone of Middlesex, England, called his the concertina. Cyrill Demian in Vienna, Austria, named his the accordian. The instrument came to the U.S. in the mid-1830s.  An artist was asked to put on canvas what he considered to be the picture best symbolizing a decaying and dying church. After several months, he returned and reported that he had finished the task.

The hour arrived finally when the painting was to be unveiled. Several people had already given their description of what they thought the church would look like. Some had said it would be a rundown building in great need of repair and paint. Weeds would be growing in the church yard, and there would be some broken window panes.

Everyone in the group seemed to have the same picture in mind. However, when the cloth was removed, a hush fell over the group. Everyone was stunned. Before their eyes was an absolutely beautiful church building. The grounds were well kept and the exterior of the building was in excellent condition.

 After a few minutes, one person stepped forward and said to the artist, “I thought we asked you to paint a dying church?” The artist smiled and invited everyone to step closer to the painting.

He pointed through the windows to the empty pews and to the collection plate on the table. There was nothing in the plate but cobwebs.

I heard from DS#2 via e-mail and he had made it safely to his duty station. It seems it must be rainy season there as they were told to expect a lot of it. He sends his love to all.

We had off and on showers all day yesterday.  They even cancelled the High School's Graduation ceremony until today. It will be cool with temps only in the 60’s, but will heat up again after that. It should be in the 80’s for the rest of the week with a few showers here and there.

Four guys wearing straw hats, harmonizing "Sweet Adeline" or "Down by the Old Mill Stream." Well, it isn't an American invention. It all started in England during Shakespeare's time when the barbershops were also popular male hangouts. The guys sang along to a lute while waiting their turn for a hair-cut. This idea was picked up in the late 1800s in the American old West. They sang to a banjo instead of a lute, but the harmony was still sweet.

THINGS ARE NOT ALWAYS AS THEY SEEM

A man was driving along in his beat up old dodge, when suddenly it broke down. He was parked on the side of the road trying fix it, when a Jaguar pulled up in front of him and offered to help.

After a few minutes the two men obviously weren't going to get the old car going again, so the Jaguar driver offered to tow the Dodge to the nearest garage. A few minutes later the two had hitched up the old Dodge to the Jaguar, and they agreed that if the Jaguar driver was going too fast, the man should blow his horn and flash his lights to get him to slow down.

With that the two men got into their cars and the Jaguar driver started to pull away with the Dodge behind it. At the first traffic light, a Ferrari pulled up beside the Jaguar and started to rev his engine.

As soon as the light turned green the Ferrari and the Jaguar hit their accelerators and took off. Before long the cars were racing at over 120 mph. As the cars speed along, they passed through a police speed trap.

The officer couldn't believe his eyes when he saw the three cars go by, and he decided that he couldn't catch them all by himself, so he decided to radio for help: "You won't believe what I just saw! I saw a Ferrari and a Jaguar doing 120 mph side by side, and a beat up old Dodge behind them flashing his lights and blowing his horn trying to get by!"

Jethro, Moses' father–in–law, spoke these words to him, when he saw Moses sitting all day long settling disputes among the people. Jethro told Moses that he should train some of the people to help him make the judgments.

Moses was smart enough to take his father–in–law's advice. Some of us are too proud to accept help, or we don't want to be under obligation to others. Some of us feel that no one can do things as well as we. Others fear losing control. For whatever the reason, we are foolish not to seek and accept help, rather than being overworked, cranky and often inefficient.

When you allow others to help, you give them the joy of reaching out to their neighbor. Perhaps you'll have the chance to pass that help on to someone else sometime.

We are still hot and humid here. This morning I’ll be going out to Dad’s to spend the weekend with him. My weekends have become the time to be there for him just in case he needs my help.

Today our little Pumpkin’ will be celebrating his 1st birthday with a party. I won’t be able to be there, but have sent a little gift his way. I do hope they take plenty of pictures to share.

TODAY IS…PLAY TENNIS DAY

And just why are tennis balls fuzzy? The only reason is to slow them down. It helps the players rally longer by increasing the wind resistance and keeping the ball from flying off the court in one bounce. The fuzz also increases racket control by holding the ball against the strings for just a fraction of a second longer. Smooth balls might equal faster serves, but they would make the game harder to play and less fun to watch.

A manager has to take on some sport, at the advice of his doctor so he decides to play tennis. After a couple of weeks his secretary asks him how he's doing. "It's going fine", the manager says, "When I'm on the court and I see the ball speeding towards me my brain immediately says: To the corner! Back hand! To the net! Smash! Go back!".

 "Really? What happens then?", the girl asks enthusiastic. "Then my body says: Who? Me? Don't talk nonsense!".

 

"I've Learned What I Can Do!"

 Roger Crawford had everything he needed to play tennis - except two hands and a leg. When Roger's parents saw their son for the first time, they saw a baby with a thumb-like projection extended directly out of his right forearm and a thumb and one finger stuck out of his left forearm. He had no palms.

The baby's arms and legs were shortened, and he had only three toes on his shrunken right foot and a withered left leg, which would later be amputated.

The doctor said Roger suffered from ectrodactylism, a rare birth defect affecting only one out of 90,000 children born in the United States. The doctor said Roger would probably never walk or care for himself.

Fortunately Roger's parents didn't believe the doctor. "My parents always taught me that I was only as handicapped as I wanted to be," said Roger. "They never allowed me to feel sorry for myself or take advantage of people because of my handicap.

Once I got into trouble because my school papers were continually late," explained Roger who had to hold his pencil with both "hands" to write slowly. "I asked Dad to write a note to my teachers, asking for a two-day extension on my assignments. Instead Dad made me start writing my papers two days early!"

Roger's father always encouraged him to get involved in sports, teaching Roger to catch and throw a volleyball, and play backyard football after school. At age 12, Roger managed to win a spot on the school football team.

 Before every game, Roger would visualize his dream of scoring a touchdown. Then one day he got his chance. The ball landed in his arms and off he ran as fast as he could on his artificial leg toward the goal line, his coach and teammates cheering wildly.

But at the ten-yard line, a guy from the other team caught up with Roger, grabbing his left ankle. Roger tried to pull his artificial leg free, but instead it ended up being pulled off. "I was still standing up," recalls Roger. "I didn't know what else to do, so I started hopping towards the goal line.

The referee ran over and threw his hands into the air. Touchdown! You know, even better than the six-points was the look on the face of the other kid who was holding my artificial leg."

 Roger's love of sports grew and so did his self-confidence. But not every obstacle gave way to Roger's determination. Eating in the lunchroom with the other kids watching him fumble with his food proved very painful to Roger, as did his repeated failure in typing class. "I learned a very good lesson from typing class," said Roger. "You can't do everything - it's better to concentrate on what you can do."

One thing Roger could do was swing a tennis racket. Unfortunately, when he swung it hard, his weak grip usually launched it into space. By luck, Roger stumbled upon an odd-looking tennis racket in a sports shop and accidentally wedged his finger between its double-barred handle when he picked it up.

The snug fit made it possible for Roger to swing, serve and volley like an able-bodied player. He practiced every day and was soon playing - and losing - matches. But Roger persisted. He practiced and practiced and played and played. Surgery on the two fingers of his left hand enabled Roger to grip his special racket better, greatly improving his game.

Although he had no role models to guide him, Roger became obsessed with tennis and in time he started to win. Roger went on to play college tennis, finishing his tennis career with 22 wins and 11 losses. He later became the first physically handicapped tennis player to be certified as a teaching professional by the United States Professional Tennis Association.

Roger now tours the country, speaking to groups about what it takes to be a winner, no matter who you are. The only difference between you and me is that you can see my handicap, but I can't see yours. We all have them. When people ask me how I've been able to overcome my physical handicaps, I tell them that I haven't overcome anything. I've simply learned what I can't do - such as play the piano or eat with chopsticks - but more importantly, I've learned what I can do. Then I do what I can with all my heart and soul.

Sometimes we don't feel much splendor in those gray hairs when they appear. But I have met senior citizens who seem younger than springtime. I have a friend who just moved in with her daughter's family. She writes that she loves being around the teenagers, for they keep her young. With a less positive attitude, she could be complaining about the mess they make and the rock music.

Rev. Charles Swindoll gives five tips for staying young:
