OVER THE HUMP DAY

I now have 2 traps setting by my back door steps. One is on either side and they are loaded with cocoa puffs. That is what the animal control guy says they like to eat. If nothing is caught in a week’s time we’ll assume the skunk has gone away and they’ll remove the traps. If we catch something they will come and take it away. Needless to say, I am now using the front door.

It has warmed up considerably and for the next 2 days we should be in the high 80’s. The weather picture of the sun has a cactus in it. Hot and dry I guess that means.

Tomorrow is the last day of work for me for this work week. I’ll be off on vacation at the camper Thursday night, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

HAPPY TUESDAY !!

Lots of excitement at my house Monday evening. My beagle has sniffed out a skunk living under/behind my back steps. He kept sniffing there when I got home Sunday evening and in the morning before I left for work too and then Monday evening when I got home, he just wouldn’t leave the steps…so my nextdoor sister suggested she spray the hose behind the steps and see what came out…a skunk came out .

We immediately evacuated the area and were lucky not to be sprayed. Today the pest control will come and set traps. Hopefully the pest will be caught and gotten rid of. My dog may be old, but his nose still works very well.

It was a beautiful sunny almost perfect day yesterday and it’s supposed to be another one today. Already this coming Saturday and Sunday has a chance of rain in the forecast. I’d better plan on taking lots of books to the camper.

DS#5 and his wife leave for their trip today. I’ll be praying for a safe and happy journey for them.

HAPPY MONDAY !!

Back to work today and of course it’s supposed to be a sunny day too ! It seems the rain comes mostly on our weekends lately. I don’t think we’ve had one solid weekend without rain since the beginning of April when camping season began.

This will be a short work week and that makes me happy. Friday will be a vacation day so I’ll be headed back to the camper on Thursday after work. 3 days off in a row are just what I need. I don’t even want to think about what will happen when camping season ends, It will be a hard adjustment for sure.

Tomorrow evening is our dulcimer get together for this month. It’s hard to believe July is almost half over already. Other than work that is about it for the week.

 I hope you all are renewed and refreshed ready for another week. I am !

FRESH BLUE BERRY SALAD

1/2 cup mayonnaise

 1/2 cup plain yogurt

1/4 cup orange marmalade

2 teaspoon lemon juice

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

3 medium peaches (cut into wedges)

2 cups fresh blueberries

2 cups cubed, smoked turkey

 1. In a mixing bowl, combine the mayonaisse, yogurt, marmalade, lemon juice and pepper.

2. Add the peaches, blueberries and turkey. Toss to mix until well coated.

3. Serve on lettuce leaves with crusty bread for a great summer meal

(It is really tomorrow but I won’t be here to send good wishes their way) May the dear Lord bless you both always!

The date says it is 7/11 and those are supposed to be lucky numbers so maybe this will be a lucky kind of day. I’m really not superstitious and consider every day to be special. It’s just that sometimes the day doesn’t seem to bring very special things my way. I guess I don’t look hard enough.

Next week DS#5 and his wife will be leaving on a trip with his Art Club to Europe. I’ll be praying for a safe trip for them all and hope they enjoy all the sights they’ll be seeing. It would be such a treat to see all the things I’ve only read about. I’m sure they’ll have lots of tales to tell when they get back home.

I spoke too soon when I said the weather looked great…the next two days forecast now includes rain.

Anyway you look at it, the word "caviar" still means fish eggs. They are washed, and then processed with salt to preserve them until eaten. This is a gourmet treat that's delicious, nutritious and... expensive. Best served on toast points, they should be garnished with finely chopped onion, hard boiled eggs and dill or capers. Caviar is also good for preventing hangovers, but it's much cheaper to just drink some cod liver oil

HAPPY THURSDAY !!

Hurray ! I made it over the hump of this long work week and now only today and tomorrow remain I don’t have much to do as usual for the next two days so they will be long ones for sure.

It seems that even though our men are back to work, my work load has not increased and with my #1 boss retired I don’t even have many of the things to do that I used to do for him. #2 boss does a lot of his own work and doesn’t pass much my way. # 1 boss was not computer literate and that makes a big difference. I guess I should feel lucky in that respect.

 I had a real treat yesterday morning as I listened to DS#5 on one of our local radio stations. He did caricatures for them and then they interviewed him and gave his caricature business a good recommendation. I don’t know how many listeners they have but it could be his work will be on the increase after that nice interview. It’s nice to have a celebrity in the family.

We are supposed to have some sunny days coming our way through most of the weekend. I do hope the weather report does not change. We had quite enough rain at the camper last weekend. Maybe the grass will grow and the mud will dry up.

After work this evening I’m supposed to go to Bible Study so I won’t be doing much at home, but I think I got what was needed done last night.

OVER THE HUMP DAY

I don’t know if you caught it or not but I forgot to update the OLD FARMER’S section of the newsletter yesterday. I got it in there today and we now have 75 days til Fall. I can always tell when I’m tired as I don’t do things right. After another good night of sleep I should be right as rain now so hopefully you won’t find any more mistakes.

I’m glad I haven’t made any worse mistakes than that for sure. We’re all human and we all make them, it’s just frustrating sometimes.

I’ve been working on the laundry this week doing a couple of loads each night so by this evening I should have that done and maybe even do a little ‘house blessing’ along the way. I’ve really neglected my home since camping season began.

Well I’ll have all the winter months to catch up. No one but me and the critters see it anyway. Speaking of critters, I’m now down to 2. The beagle and the dirty bird are the only ones still here. I lost my old lady cat last week. She would have been 18 in October and lived a very full and long life. Now the beagle is 15 and the dirty bird is 28. I know the dirty bird will probably live longer than I will.

We had another big rain storm yesterday so things are still very green and growing around here. The hummers are still coming to the feeders by the patio, but it doesn’t seem as though there are as many as last year. My hydrangea bush has 1 big bloom on it now and it looks like there will be 5 more coming soon. That is the most it’s ever had.

That’s the news from home as I know it.

TODAY IS…SUGAR COOKIE DAY

Sugar cookies are the most versatile dessert you'll ever bake. They can be cut into any shape. They can be frosted or left plain. They can be decorated to fit any holiday or just made for fun. The only problem is keeping them in the cookie jar because they disappear so fast

OLD FASHIONED SUGAR COOKIES

1/2 cup butter

1 cup sugar

1 large egg

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

1 teaspoon lemon extract (optional)

Frosting:

1 cup confectioners (powdered) sugar

 5-6 teaspoons water

1-2 drops food coloring (optional)

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease cookie sheets.

2. In a large bowl, mix the butter, sugar, egg and lemon extract.

3. Stir in the rest of the ingredients and mix well. Divide the dough into two parts. Chill 1 - 2 hours so it will be easy to handle.

4. Roll half the dough out on a floured surface until it is 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. Cut with cookie cutters. Keep the other half chilled until ready to use. Place the cookies 1 inch apart on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake 7 to 8 minutes or until no indentation remains when touched. 5. To Frost: Blend the confectioner’s sugar and water in a small bowl. Add food coloring if desired. For a thin layer of frosting, brush on while the cookies are still warm. For a thicker frosting, let the cookies cool and frost with a knife.

Even though I clutch my blanket and growl when the alarm rings, thank you, Lord, that I can hear. There are many who are deaf.

Another morning has come, another good cup of coffee and another work day. I have to count my blessings as more and more I realize how fortunate I am that I can still do these things. Many people can’t or won’t or are not able to.

Ordinary days can sometimes bog us down, but even though I’d rather be camping, I have to appreciate the gifts I’ve been given; not just on weekends, but everyday of my life.

It will be another hot day here in Ohio. It’s sort of hard to get used to as we’ve had so many cool days so far this summer. I finally did take the flannels off my bed so I hope it is staying warm now for awhile.

A Michigan woman and her family were vacationing in a small New England town where Paul Newman and his family often visited. One Sunday morning, the woman got up early to take a long walk. After a brisk five-mile hike, she decided to treat herself to a double-dip chocolate ice cream cone.

She hopped in the car, drove to the center of the village and went straight to the combination bakery/ice cream parlor. There was only one other patron in the store: Paul Newman, sitting at the counter having a doughnut and coffee.

The woman's heart skipped a beat as her eyes made contact with those famous baby-blue eyes. The actor nodded graciously and the star-struck woman smiled demurely. Pull yourself together, she chides herself. You're a happily married woman with three children; you're forty-five years old, not a teenager!

The clerk filled her order and she took the double-dip chocolate ice cream cone in one hand and her change in the other. Then she went out the door, avoiding even a glance in Paul Newman's direction. When she reached her car, she realized that she had a handful of change - but her other hand was empty.

Where's my ice cream cone? Did I leave it in the store? Back into the shop she went, expecting to see the cone still in the clerk's hand or in a holder on the counter or something. But no ice cream cone was in sight.

With that, she happened to look over at Paul Newman. His face broke into his familiar warm, friendly grin and he said to the woman, "You put it in your purse."
