HAPPY TUESDAY!

Yesterday it was a mostly cloudy day, but no rain came down. I think today through Thursday we have a good chance of it. Our grass has started to green up so it would be a blessing to have . We may actually have to mow our grass for the first time in about a month.

Work was busy, but I got caught up from having Friday off. My boss decided to spread mulch around the office parking lot where he has some shrubs and trees planted and it was very smelly. I could hardly stand to breathe outside. I don’t know where he gets it, but it is terrible.

All is pretty quiet on the homefront.

The TV show 60 Minutes ran a segment that tells us something important about fatherlessness.

The park rangers at a South African wildlife preserve were concerned about the slaughter of 39 rare white rhinos in their park. It turned out that the rhinos were killed not by poachers but rather by juvenile delinquents—teen elephants.

The story began a decade ago when the park could no longer sustain the increasing population of elephants. They decided to kill many of the adult elephants whose young were old enough to survive without them.

And so, the young elephants grew up fatherless. As time went on, many of these young elephants roamed together in gangs and began to do things elephants normally don't do. They threw sticks and water at rhinos and acted like neighborhood bullies.

Without dominant males, the young bulls became sexually active, producing excessive testosterone and exhibiting aggressive behavior. A few young males grew especially violent, knocking down rhinos and stepping or kneeling on them, crushing the life out of them.

Mafuto the gang leader eventually had to be killed. The park rangers theorized that these young teen-aged elephants were acting badly because they lacked role models. T

he solution was to bring in a large male to lead them and to counteract their bully behaviors. Soon the new male established dominance and put the young bulls in their places. The killing stopped. The young males were mentored—and saved.

Flying into a storm is a dangerous experience. The temptation is to fly by your instincts, or, as aviators say, “by the seat of your pants.” But as any pilot will tell you, that’s a prescription for disaster.

If you rely on your feelings and instincts, you become disoriented, thinking the plane is going up when it’s actually going down. Thankfully, the instrument panel is set to magnetic north and can be trusted every time.

Letting your instruments guide you, even when it feels like they’re wrong, helps ensure safety in the storm. We all face storms that threaten to confuse and disorient us. Those are the times to be especially careful.

When you are blinded by life’s disappointments, don’t trust your instincts. God wants to guide you, and His Word is packed with wisdom and insights for living. His “Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Ps. 119:105).

Where He leads is always right! The closer we walk with God, the clearer we see His guidance.

It’s back to work once again.

It should be a pretty quiet week here. The few things I’ve got on the calendar are Tuesday - taking some things of my Dad’s to the local chapter of the DAV that he belonged to.

Thursday - taking a long lunch hour as I’ve got a dentist appointment .

That is it besides work until the weekend, then I’ve got the shower to attend for DN#3’s bride to be. That will be a happy occasion.

It was a really nice weekend here and I got my weekly dose of R&R yesterday, so I should be in great shape for another work week.

TODAY IS…MAPLE SYRUP DAY

Making maple syrup is the oldest agricultural enterprise in the U.S. A maple tree needs to be about 45 years old and 12 inches in diameter before it is tapped. A single tap will produce about 10 gallons of sap, and it takes 30-50 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of maple syrup. Wow!

MAYPLE SYRUP COOKIES

3 cups oatmeal

1 cup raisins

1 cup sesame seeds

1 cup pure maple syrup

1 cup peanut butter

1 tablespoon vanilla

1. Put the peanut butter and maple syrup in a small sauce pan. Cook over low heat and stir until mixed. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla. 2. Dump the oatmeal, raisins and sesame seeds into a mixing bowl. Add the liquid mixture from your saucepan. Stir until well combined. 3. Form into cookies using your hands. Make balls or flatten them out. Place cookies on waxed paper until they are dry enough to hold together

Like most people these days I seem to have more and more to do. Everyday there seems to be one hundred and one things that need done right away. As much as I try to simplify my life I always end up spending my time taking care of the daily details of living.

That is why I try to keep a little reminder taped to the window of my mind. This reminder tells me of the only two things that I really need to do each day.

It is just four words long so that I won't forget it. It says, "Relax and chooseJoy." Now I still do all the daily errands that life demands. I still drive the kids to school and pick them up again. I still run to the store and get the groceries. I still do the dishes, feed the pets, and clean the house. I still do my work and pay my bills. Only now I do them happily and in a spirit of love and joy.

I don't feel rushed or stressed or worried anymore. I don't feel upset or bad if something doesn't get done. I don't feel like a failure because I haven't been the perfect husband or dad.

My little reminder has helped me to live a busy life with a peaceful heart. It has kept my thoughts and feelings focused on what is really important in this life. It has allowed me to "relax and choose joy" as I go about doing the one hundred and one things that need done each day.

I know now that no matter how busy I may get if I only relax and choose joy and love that things will work out as they should.

When the daily details of life start to get to you then remember that God loves you and wants you to be happy. Remember that you need only to "relax and choose joy" to make your busy life beautiful and wonderful again.

Today is R and R day once more. I’ll be getting ready soon and going off to church as always First of all before all that happens, I can take the time to slowly wake up and even have a couple of those good cups of coffee this morning.

What a blessing that there is one morning of the week that there is no rushing around to do. There is of course plenty to do around here as the past few months have not allowed for much to be done at home…but it has waited this long and will wait just a bit longer too.

If I don’t have my R & R day there is just nothing that’s going to go right anyway.

Words are so powerful! We can heal or harm others by our words. How good it is when we can say just the words that are needed to comfort someone who is sorrowful, or encourage someone who is doubtful, or cheer someone on who is fearful.

Parents can make such a difference in their children's self-esteem. Unfortunately some parents only criticize, and if you were to ask them about it, they would say that they were trying to guide their children to do things the right way.

That is surely commendable, but if we don't add words of praise and encouragement, as the child attempts something, we are going to hamper our child's confidence

HAPPY FINALLY FRIDAY!

Today I’ll be working, but a different kind of work for sure. My sisters and I are doing the difficult job of having a sale to clear my dad’s house.

Some things we treasure and we’ve kept them, but others would only be duplicates of something we already have or couldn’t use. Tomorrow will be the last day for the sale as it has gone on since Wednesday.

My two sisters have had the brunt of the work on this sale due to my having to work, but I managed to get a vacation day so I could help. There is still a lot left to sell.

TODAY IS…TAPIOCA PUDDING DAY!

Tapioca is the starch from a cassava root. It can be used as a food, in bread or as a thickening agent in puddings, soups or juicy pies. Cassava plants are native to the West Indies and South America. As the plant was introduced to other parts of the world, tapioca became a big hit with cooks everywhere.

CHOCOLATE TAPIOCA PUDDING

2 cups milk

1/2 cup honey

1/4 cup quick-cooking tapioca

1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate morsels

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1. In a medium saucepan, stir together the milk, honey and tapioca. Let it stand for 10 minutes. 2. Place the saucepan over medium-high heat. Stirring frequently, bring the mixture to a boil. Continue to cook and stir for 3 more minutes. 3. Remove from heat. Add the chocolate morsels and vanilla. Stir until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth. Serve warm or cold.

She had to move from her spacious home, friendly neighborhood, the nearby church and all that was familiar to her when her husband died. It was time to live in a high rise, independent living apartment for the elderly. The move was difficult for her, but she asked God to help her in this trying time.

What would she do without her garden to tend, neighbors to talk to, the activities at the church and all else that was familiar to her? "Please, Lord," she said, "give me a passion for something."

On the other side of the building were the accommodations for those who needed assisted living. Their living quarters consisted of a bedroom and a bathroom. Their meals were served to them, pills distributed promptly, clothes laundered, personal needs tended to and the area kept clean and neat.

 What was missing was interaction with people; conversations and laughter did not permeate the halls of the assisted living area.

One day Alice walked from one side of the building to the other to visit a friend who went to assisted living following a stroke. She became aware of the need there- the touch of a hand, someone to be a good listener, someone who cared about the individual.

She asked God, "Is this the place you want me to serve, Lord?" It seems His answer was yes, for before long her visits turned into fulltime ministry for those folks. She ate meals with them, wrote notes for them, discussed family photos, prayed with them, and most of all, she listened. She was a friend to each person that God put in her path.

Most of us have a tendency to talk too much. Many times during a conversation, we'll be thinking so much about what we're going to say that we're not listening to what the other person is saying.

Silence is important, for it sometimes keeps you from saying words you will later regret. When you really listen to what the other person is saying, you are showing that person that you respect him or her. There's also the possibility that you may learn something.

Think about this. Don't you enjoy a friend who doesn't try to monopolize the conversation, but will sit quietly and listen to your responses? And when sorrow or difficulty comes into your life, nothing is more comforting than a friend who will sit with you in total silence, letting you know how much she or he cares. And when you go to God in prayer, sometimes silence is the most powerful part of the prayer.

You thank God for past blessings and tell him about your needs, but do you ever stop to listen for his answer? Sometimes in that silence, solutions to the problem can enter your mind.

Lord, guide me to know when I should be silent and let your loving wisdom shine through.

If your coffee machine begs for a rinse . . . Pour a quart of white vinegar into the water chamber, put in a filter, and run the machine through its brewing cycle. Put the vinegar in again, but this time let it sit for half an hour. Run through the brewing cycle again. Then run a pot of fresh water through the entire cycle. Repeat with a second pot of fresh water.

This is the last day of my work week. Tomorrow will be a working vacation day.

 We got just a little more rain here yesterday and it’s been quite muggy outside.

There is just not much to tell. These have been quiet busy days this week just filled with work and not much else. Ordinary days are good so I’m not complaining.

Things don't always go as we would like, but we don't have to waste time moaning and groaning. You can make your life miserable by looking on the dark side and feeling sorry for yourself. Or you can look on the bright side and try to find what is good about your situation.

HAPPY WEDNESDAY!

Over the Hump Day ! Did I say we are busy at work ! Wow…it is getting busier and busier. Just about the time I thought I was making headway in my piles yesterday, boss # 2 came up with a few more things for me to do.

Today is payroll day soooo, I won’t do much but that . Payroll day also includes something they call job costing. Everything on payroll has to be applied to the particular job the hours were spent on. That way we keep on track .

Thursday will have to be my get it all done day at work… I’m off on Friday.

We also got some light showers yesterday and may get more today. What a blessing that is. The grass, the flowers and the trees are probably saying their thank you’s too !

HAPPY TUESDAY!

Ohhhhhh ….we made it through Monday now we’ll see about Tuesday. I thought I was pretty well rested from the weekend, but I was sooooo tired Monday evening.

Tonight is dulcimer night and that means I’ll be up a little later than usual, hopefully the extra sleep I got last night will see me through.

I’ve got a stack on my desk to make my way through today at work. Due to my boss thinking up a few research projects for me yesterday, I’m behind. Hopefully today will be a quiet one and I get everything done. Tomorrow will be payroll day and I will be busy enough just with that. WE’LL SEE…
