You Light Up My Life Day - Celebrated on the birthday of singer Debbie Boone, who sang the hit song "You Light Up My Life." Light up someone's life, do something special for them. Debbie was born on this day in 1956, in Hackensack, New Jersey.

The Late Bloomer

A cactus stood all alone in the desert, wondering why it was stuck in the middle of nowhere. "I do nothing but stand here all day," it sighed. "What use am I? I'm the ugliest plant in the desert. My spines are thick and prickly, my leaves are rubbery and tough, my skin is thick and bumpy. I can't offer shade or juicy fruit to any passing traveler. I don't see that I'm any use at all."

All it did was stand in the sun day after day, growing taller and fatter. Its spines grew longer and its leaves tougher, and it swelled here and there until it was lumpy and lopsided all over.

It truly was strange- looking. "I wish I could do something useful," it sighed. By day hawks circled high overhead. "What can I do with my life?" the cactus called. Whether they heard or not, the hawks sailed away.

At night the moon floated into the sky and cast its pale glow on the desert floor. "What good can I do with my life?" the cactus called. The moon only stared coldly as it mounted its course.

A lizard crawled by, leaving a little trail in the sand with its tail. "What worthy deed can I do?" the cactus called. "You?" the lizard laughed, pausing a moment. "Worthy deed? Why, you can't do anything!

The hawks circle way overhead, tracing delicate patterns for us all to admire. The moon hangs high like a lantern at night, so we can see our ways home to our loved ones.

 Even I, the lowly lizard, have something to do. I decorate the sands with these beautiful brushstrokes as I pull my tail along. Buy you? You do nothing but get uglier every day."

And so it went on, year after year. At last the cactus grew old, and it knew its time was short. "Oh, Lord," it cried out, "I've wondered so long, and I've tried so hard.

Forgive me if I've failed to find something worthy to do. I fear that now it's too late." But just then the cactus felt a strange stirring and unfolding, and it knew a surge of joy that erased all despair.

At its very tip, like a sudden crown, a glorious flower suddenly opened in bloom. Never had the desert known such a blossom. Its fragrance perfumed the air far and wide and brought happiness to all passing by. The butterflies paused to admire its beauty, and that night even the moon smiled when it rose to find such a treasure.

The cactus heard a voice. "You have waited long," the Lord said. "The heart that seeks to do good reflects My glory, and will always bring something worthwhile to the world, something in which all can rejoice - even if for only a moment."

I’ve been layering up the clothes the past few days. It gets a little warmer during the day at work, so I can take off a layer and put it on again later.

Well our rain came right on schedule as predicted by the weather man. It started on my way home from work yesterday Today is supposed to be partly cloudy with a high of 70 degrees and a low of 49. That’s a bit chilly.  

Tonight is Dulcimer night and this month we start practicing Christmas Carols…I love them and since we only get together once a month, That only gives us 4 Times to play them.

 TODAY IS…HOMEMADE PUDDING DAY  

What can I say about This Date?   You can spend hours sweating over a hot stove doing this... Make Your Own Pudding OR buy some pudding paks  

BUTTER SCOTCH PUDDING RECIPE  

3 cups milk

4 large egg yolks

3/4 cup dark brown sugar

1/4 cup cornstarch

2 Tbsp. unsalted butter, cold, cut into small pieces

 2 tsp. vanilla

3 Tbsp. molasses

1.Bring 2-1/2 cups milk to a boil in a medium saucepan. Mix together the remaining 1/2 cup milk, egg yolks, brown sugar, molasses, and cornstarch in a mixing bowl until smooth.   2. Temper the hot milk into the mixing bowl by slowly adding and while mixing. Return the entire mixture to the saucepan.   3. Bring to a boil, whisking constantly until thickened. Remove from the heat and whisk in butter and vanilla extract.   4. Strain into a clean bowl or four individual pudding cups. Place a piece of plastic wrap or waxed paper directly on the pudding surface. Let cool at room temperature and refrigerate for at least three hours before serving.  

(I never strained my pudding, but I didn’t mind the lumps either )

Sunday was a beautiful day for the last weekend of Summer ! That’s right fall will be here next weekend!

Our weather is going down hill starting today, it’ll rain later and really cool off – it’s supposed to be mid 60’s for a high come Wednesday…but will be in the low 70’s by the weekend. I love those 10 – day forecasts…we’ll see how well they’ve done as the week progresses.

DS#6 did really well with his art show – he got an ‘Honorable Mention’ on one of his entries and DS#5 did really well at the Apple Festival doing his caricatures. DD and her hubby stopped over Sunday evening and DS#1 called to check in …All is well with them.

On my calendar (besides work ) this week is Dulcimer on Tuesday evening…other wise it looks like a pretty quiet week.

TODAY IS…MUSHROOM PICKERS DAY

Mushrooms are a fungi (ick) that are related to molds and yeasts. There are tens of thousands of different species, but only a few hundred we can eat. All the rest are toxic. Not all mushrooms grow in dark, damp places -some need sunlight - and some even glow in the dark! Be careful what you pick to throw in the stew pot (or just get them at the grocery store like us).

BAKED MUSHROOMS

1 pound fresh mushrooms, quartered

1 onion, diced

1 clove garlic, chopped

1 green bell pepper, diced

1/2 tsp. Italian seasoning

 1/4 tsp. seasoning salt

1 dash pepper

2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

2 tablespoons water

4 tablespoons melted butter

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). 2. In a 1 quart casserole dish combine mushrooms, onion, garlic, green pepper, Italian seasoning, seasoning salt, pepper and parsley. Pour water and butter over mixture and cover. 3. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes.

As you might know, the head of a company survived 9/11 because his son started kindergarten.

Another fellow was alive because it was his turn to bring donuts.

One woman was late because her alarm clock didn't go off in time.

One was late because of being stuck on the NJ Turnpike because of an auto accident.

One of them missed his bus.

One spilled food on her clothes and had to take time to change.

One's car wouldn't start.

 One went back to answer the telephone.

One had a child that dawdled and didn't get ready as soon as he should have.

One couldn't get a taxi.

The one that struck me was the man who put on a new pair of shoes that morning, took the various means to get to work but before he got there, he developed a bliste r on his foot. He stopped at a drugstore to buy a Band-Aid. That is why he is alive today.

Now when I am stuck in traffic,

miss an elevator,

turn back to answer a ringing telephone...

 all the little things that annoy me.

I think to myself, this is exactly where God wants me to be at this very moment..

Next time your morning seems to be going wrong, the children are slow getting dressed, you can't seem to find the car keys, you hit every traffic light, don't get mad or frustrated; God is at work watching over you.

May God continue to bless you with all those annoying little things and may you remember their possible purpose.

Maybe today the sun will shine ??? We were promised sun yesterday, but it didn’t happen. I won’t be doing the ‘house blessing ‘ today as the ‘Newlyweds’ are visiting…it will just have to wait.

DS#6 had his art show last night so they stopped off here, tomorrow DDIL#6 has a birthday celebration with her family so today being the day in between, they are here to spend the day with me.

A friend of mine was in the hospital awaiting the arrival of her first child. When I telephoned the hospital to see if the baby had arrived, Dr. Wilson said it had. I asked if it was a boy or girl and was told that it was against hospital policy to give this information over the phone.
