HAPPY TUESDAY !

Monday was a beautiful sunny day – in the upper 70’s and low humidity. Today promises to be about the same only maybe just a little warmer. For at least 2 days this week I didn’t have to use the a/c. That is a blessing.

DS #5 will be at the county fair all week We’ll hope the weather stays good for him and he does well.

I’m trying to get out and walk as often as possible because our nice days won’t last forever.

TODAY IS…EAT A PEACH DAY

Fresh peaches are full of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, vitamin C, riboflavin, and beta carotene. They are also low in calories, fat-free, sodium-free, and cholesterol-free. And what's summer without eating fresh peaches (with the juice running down your chin). Everyone has a favorite fruit, but this one is very popular.

FRESH PEACH CAKE RECIPE

1 (2-layer) yellow cake mix

3/4 cup melted butter

1 pound peaches, peeled and sliced

2 cups sour cream

1/4 cup sugar

3 egg yolks

cinnamon

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). 2. Combine the dry cake mix and melted butter in a bowl. Mix well. Spread in the bottom of a lightly greased 9 x 12-inch cake pan. 3. Layer the peaches over top. Blend the sour cream, sugar, and egg yolks in a bowl. Spoon over the peaches. Sprinkle with cinnamon. 4. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until set.

HAPPY MONDAY !

I had an adventurous Sunday ! I went off to church as usual and as I headed to the garage to get the car out I remembered I’d left the house key on the hook in the kitchen. I’d taken it off my key ring so that my nextdoor sister could let in the washer repair man on Friday !

I had to call DS#6 so he could call DD and thankfully she let me in. I couldn’t remember anyone's phone numbers and DS#5 wasn’t at home. I really need to get some more keys made.

DS#2 called me yesterday ! He had just arrived back in the states and was laid-over up north, but would be heading for home shortly. I bet his family was glad to see him. I know he was glad to be in the good old USA again. I’m am so thankful the good Lord brought him home safely.

Hopefully, today I’ll get my mind back and remember the keys and everything else I’m supposed to do. I hate to think that my age has anything to do with it, but it might ???

How Gossip gets Started

The executive secretary passed the order on to the company commander: "By order of the Colonel, tomorrow at 2000 hours, Haley's Comet will appear above the battalion area. If it rains, fall the men out in fatigues, then march to the theater where the rare phenomenon will take place, something which happens only once every 75 years."

The company commander passed the order on to the lieutenant: "By order of the Colonel in fatigues at 2000 hours tomorrow evening, the phenomenal Haley's Comet will appear in the theater. In case of rain in the battalion area, the Colonel will give another order, something which happens once every 75 years.

The lieutenant told the sergeant: "Tomorrow at 2000 hours, the Colonel in fatigues will appear in the theater with the phenomenal Haley's Comet, something that happens every 75 years. If it rains, the Colonel will order the comet into the battalion area."

Unfortunately, many rumors get started in much the same way. What begins as an innocent statement can quickly transform into an ugly lie after being passed along by several "well-meaning" people.

That's why the scriptures warn so strongly about the sin of gossip. "Without wood, a fire will go out, and without gossip, quarreling will stop. Just as charcoal and wood keep a fire going, a quarrelsome person keeps an argument going. The words of a gossip are like tasty bits of food; people like to gobble them up." (Proverbs 26:20-22, NCV)

TODAY IS…SPICEY FOOD DAY !

The spices in the hot foods we eat are oily. And, we all know that oil and water don't mix. So, what can you do to cool down a hot mouth? Try one of these... Eat bread - it will absorb the oily spices. Drink milk - it contains "casein" that binds the spices and carries them away.

SPICEY CRAB NACHOS

 2 tablespoons butter or margarine

2 garlic cloves, pealed and sliced

1/2 small onion, slices

salt and pepper, to taste

1 cup bottled clam juice

1 cup heavy or whipping cream

2 canned chipotle chiles, rinsed

1 cup (4 oz) grated Romano cheese

1 cup (4 oz) grated Monterey Jack cheese

10 oz crab meat

8 oz tortilla chips (3 handfuls)

1/2 bunch cilantro leaves (optional)

1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). 2. Melt butter or margarine in a large skillet over medium heat. Saute garlic and onions with salt and pepper for about 5 minutes. Pour in the clam juice and boil until the liquid is reduced by half (2-3 minutes). 3. Add the cream and cook over high heat until thick enough to coat a spoon. Stir in the chipotle chilies and remove from heat. Put the mixture into a blender and puree. Return to skillet and stir in 1/2 cup of each kind of cheese. 4. Place the skillet over medium heat and stir in the crabmeat. Bring to a boil and immediately remove from heat. Stir in the tortilla chips. 5. Transfer to a large casserole dish. Sprinkle with the rest of the cheese. Place in oven for 5 minutes to melt the cheese. Garnish with cilantro if desired.

Jesus was giving Peter instructions and Peter asked about what another disciple would be doing. Our scripture today gives Jesus' answer.

If we love the Lord, we will follow him and not look left and right at how others are serving him. God gives each of us special talents.

Why waste time trying to compare ourselves with others? When we give of our best, whether at work, at home or at play, we reap the rewards of peace and joy.

When we obey Jesus and follow him, our thoughts are not straying to what others are doing. We are cheerfully serving the Lord.

A kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom of children while they were drawing. When she got to one little girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was. The child replied, 'I'm drawing God.'

The teacher paused and said, 'But no one knows what God looks like.' Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing, the little girl replied, 'they will in a minute.'

RULES KIDS WON’T LEARN IN SCHOOL

Rule No. 1: Life is not fair. Get used to it. The average teen-ager uses the phrase "It's not fair" 8.6 times a day. You got it from your parents, who said it so often you decided they must be the most idealistic generation ever. When they started hearing it from their own kids, they realized Rule No. 1.

Rule No. 2: The real world won't care as much about your self-esteem as much as your school does. It'll expect you to accomplish something before you feel good about yourself. This may come as a shock. Usually, when inflated self-esteem meets reality, kids complain that it's not fair. (See Rule No. 1)

Rule No. 3: Sorry, you won't make $40,000 a year right out of high school. And you won't be a vice president or have a car phone either. You may even have to wear a uniform that doesn't have a Gap label.

Rule No. 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait 'til you get a boss. He doesn't have tenure, so he tends to be a bit edgier. When you screw up, he's not going to ask you how you feel about it.

Rule No. 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping. They called it opportunity. They weren't embarrassed making minimum wage either.

. Rule No. 6: It's not your parents' fault. If you screw up, you are responsible. This is the flip side of "It's my life," and "You're not the boss of me," and other eloquent proclamations of your generation. When you turn 18, it's on your dime. Don't whine about it, or you'll sound like a baby boomer.

Rule No. 7: Before you were born your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way paying your bills, cleaning up your room and listening to you tell them how idealistic you are. And by the way, before you save the rain forest from the blood-sucking parasites of your parents' generation, try delousing the closet in your bedroom.

Rule No. 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers. Life hasn't. In some schools, they'll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. Failing grades have been abolished and class valedictorians scrapped, lest anyone's feelings be hurt. Effort is as important as results. This, of course, bears not the slightest resemblance to anything in real life. (See Rule No. 1, Rule No. 2 and Rule No. 4.)

Rule No. 9: Life is not divided into semesters, and you don't get summers off. Not even Easter break. They expect you to show up every day. For eight hours. And you don't get a new life every 10 weeks. It just goes on and on. While we're at it, very few jobs are interested in fostering your self-expression or helping you find yourself. Fewer still lead to self-realization. (See Rule No. 1 and Rule No. 2.)

Rule No. 10: Television is not real life. Your life is not a sitcom. Your problems will not all be solved in 30 minutes, minus time for commercials. In real life, people actually have to leave the coffee shop to go to jobs.

Rule No. 11: Be nice to nerds. You may end up working for them. We all could.

Well we had electricity all day at work yesterday !

That was the good news!

The bad news is that my washing machine is making a very squeaky noise (Its not the same one as last time) so I guess I’ll have to call the repairman back again ! Oh dear !

I guess there are always some joys and sorrows to each day. Thankfully the joys outweigh the sorrows.

I also had a visit from DD and her hubby yesterday evening. She’d made cabbage and noodles and brought me over some – yummmmm!!!

The front door was accidentally left open and our dog was gone.

After unsuccessfully whistling and calling, my husband got in the car and went looking for him. He drove around the neigbourhood for some time with no luck. Finally he stopped beside a couple out for a walk and asked if they had seen our dog.

I had an exciting day at work yesterday – the power was out until afternoon at my workplace. I got there at 7 in the morning and sat around til almost 1:00 before the lights came back on. There is just nothing you can do in an office anymore with out power…I could answer the phone, but that was all. When I left work I saw the news channel van across the street, we must have made the evening news. All told the little town where I work was without power for 12 hours.

Hopefully today will be ok as I need to process the payroll and that requires the computer to work.

TODAY IS…BRATWURST FESTIVAL DAY

Every August, there's a 2 day celebration commemorating Bratwurst in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Bratwurst is a big, fat sausage of German origin. In the U.S., you'll usually find it made of a pork and spices, severd on a bun and topped with sauerkraut. Over in Germany, it's made with different kinds of meat, but usually veal. And as to eating... a bratwurst in one hand and a roll in the other is politically correct. Either way, it sounds really good to me.

THE FATE OF SAND CASTLES

You've watched it, too. I know I'm not the first or only person who has seen it. But there is a lesson in it that we both may have overlooked.

There are some children on a beach. They're playing and giggling -- building sand castles all the while. They seem so intent on the project.

You get amused at how meticulous and careful they are with crumbly corners and towers. The looks on their faces as they screw their mouths around and stick out their tongues make you smile.

Their resolute concentration on the task is priceless. Then a big wave begins building and starts toward shore. But the kids don't panic. Instead, they do the strangest thing. They jump to their feet, scream with delight, and watch the torrent of water wash away their creations. There is no panic. No sadness. No bitterness. Even children know the inevitable end of sand castles.

They are neither surprised nor angry about what has happened. You and I should be so wise. The stuff of this world is about as lasting and durable as children's sand castles on the beach. Yet we grownups can get so caught up in it, defensive of it, and depressed over the loss of it.

God didn't create you to be famous, get rich, live in the biggest house, or drivethe fanciest car. He created you for his glory. He put you in the world to love people and do holy things.

Your destiny is not bound up in physical things, but spiritual. So living to be a hundred is far less important than living well -- even if for a short time. Beautifying your body is far less urgent than purifying your soul.

Children know that their sand castles are brief joys destined to disappear with an incoming tide. So they don't fret as the waves approach. They watch their creations get swept away without shedding tears.

Again, we should be so wise. Everything about this life is fleeting and perishable. The incoming wave of human mortality is going to sweep it all away. Like sand castles, nothing done for the sake of this world can last.

Only what we do for eternity will survive. What would the loss of your job or business do to you? What if your house were lost to fire or storm? What if a strange pain sent you to your physician and led to the discovery that you have only a few weeks to live?

These things really do happen to people, you know. We are all as vulnerable as sand castles. Life is God's gift. Revel in every good thing. But as you enjoy your creations in the sand, just remember not to get overly attached to them.

"Help us, O Lord, to number our days wisely. Amen."
