THE WEDDING SHOWER IS TODAY !  

This afternoon we'll be celebrating the forthcoming marriage of Son#6 at a bridal shower for DDIL#62B.  What a grand day !  I'll be posting pictures on my journal page as usual.    I found this neat site with links for a virtual vacation - http://peggiesplace.gospelcom.net/virtualvacation.htm   just scroll down the page ...On day 12 I found Cedar Points Millenium Force listed as one of the Top Ten Roller Coasters!

  TODAY IS...MAPLE SYRUP DAY  

Making maple syrup is the oldest agricultural enterprise in the U.S. A maple tree needs to be about 45 years old and 12 inches in diameter before it is tapped. A single tap will produce about 10 gallons of sap, and it takes 30-50 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of maple syrup. Wow  

 NO BAKE MAPLE SYRUP COOKIES  

3 cups oatmeal
1 cup raisins
1 cup sesame seeds
1 cup pure maple syrup
1 cup peanut butter
1 tablespoon vanilla 1. Put the peanut butter and maple syrup in a small sauce pan. Cook over low heat and stir until mixed. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla.

2. Dump the oatmeal, raisins and sesame seeds into a mixing bowl. Add the liquid mixture from your saucepan. Stir until well combined.

3. Form into cookies using your hands. Make balls or flatten them out. Place cookies on waxed paper until they are dry enough to hold together.

HAPPY FINALLY FRIDAY !  

After our early morning shower yesterday, the sun did come out and the painter did return -- only for about 2 hours, but he got painted what he had taped and papered the day before. It looks very nice !   Now we just wait and see how much more sunshine we have and hope he works for more than 2 hours in one day !

 

  We have meetings for safety at work this morning from 7-9 and then a meeting for our 401K plan after that !  It certainly will be different having everyone in the office...I'm usually there by myself !

HAPPY THANKFULLY THURSDAY !  

 Our painter did come yesterday, but other than finding out that his paint sprayer wouldn't work right, not much painting got done.  And he didn't start til 11:00 in the morning and didn't finish til after 5 and all he got done was taping paper around the windows !  S L O W...   I shouldn't complain, but I'm anxious to get it done - the house will look really nice when it's finished !  Seems like the good Lord is always trying to teach me patience !   I'm taking some pictures of the progress as we go and will post them on my journal page.   So...today I'm sitting here being very thankful that wrinkles don't hurt !

TODAY IS...MAKE A SCARECROW DAY  

The most famous scarecrow may be in the "Wizard of Oz", but they can be found all over the world. Their name comes from using a device to scare away crows, but they are really used to keep any bird or animal from disturbing seeds, shoots and fruit. They can also be used at your house to welcome guests or just to decorate your yard  

How to Make a Scarecrow
A regular kitchen broom
A cross piece for arms (yard stick, pvc pipe, wood)
Duct tape
Gloves
Rubber bands
Any kind of old clothes
1. The bristle end of the broom is the head. Measure 6 inches down the broom handle and mark with a pen. Tape your cross piece for the arms at the mark by wrapping the duct tape in X's front and back.

2. Dress you scarecrow any fun way you like. You can use a dress, t-shirt, sports jacket, overalls or anything else you have on hand. If you use overalls, cut a hole in the seat for the broom stick to go through. Add gloves to the end of the arms last and secure with rubber bands.

3. You can stuff or not stuff your scarecrow. Garbage bags make good stuffing if you don't have bales of straw. Secure any openings with rubber bands or duct tape as you go.

4. Finishing touches could be a hat, sunglasses, earrings or drawing on a face. When complete, just stick the broom handle in the ground wherever you want your scarecrow to stand.

OVER THE HUMP DAY !  

The painter was a no show on Tuesday, hopefully we'll see him today and hopefully the rain will hold off for a couple more days.  This old house may never get painted at this rate.  Either it's raining or he's a no show...a no win situation.    On the happier side of things here we are the middle of the week - over the hump and sliding into the weekend.  This Saturday is the wedding shower for DDIL#62B - so exciting !!!  I'll be going with DDIL # 1 , our Princess and DDIL #5. ( I think that's the plan)

 TODAY IS...TAPIOCA PUDDING DAY !

  Tapioca is the starch from a cassava root. It can be used as a food, in bread or as a thickening agent in puddings, soups or juicy pies. Cassava plants are native to the West Indies and South America. As the plant was introduced to other parts of the world, tapioca became a big hit with cooks everywhere.  

CHOCOLATE TAPIOCA PUDDING

   2 cups milk
1/2 cup honey
1/4 cup quick-cooking tapioca
1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate morsels
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1. In a medium saucepan, stir together the milk, honey and tapioca. Let it stand for 10 minutes.

2. Place the saucepan over medium-high heat. Stirring frequently, bring the mixture to a boil. Continue to cook and stir for 3 more minutes.

3. Remove from heat. Add the chocolate morsels and vanilla. Stir until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth. Serve warm or cold.

The painter is supposed to start painting our house today - we have 3 days of sun with no rain promised.  He should have it done by then ! I think that after today it's supposed to cool down a little and some of the humidity will clear out.  It's been uncomfortable to go outside.  Maybe my age is showing, but when it gets in the 90's , I just want to stay in the air conditioning.

 As always it's hard getting started Monday morning... It was a good weekend though, hopefully the week will go well too !  Tuesday is dulcimer night which is always a good time .  Other than that , I'm hoping the weather clears and the painter can get started on the house this week .

TODAY IS...SIDE WALK FRYING DAY !  

  Have you heard that old saying, "It's hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk!"? Well, it can definitely be done. If the temperature at your house gets up to 95 degrees F (that's 35 degrees C), the heat reflected off the cement will cook like your kitchen stove. At temperatures a bit lower, you just need to be creative. Use a mirror or a piece of aluminum foil to heat it up a notch. And one final hint: don't eat the final product  

   IT'S DEFINITELY BEEN HOT ENOUGH TO FRY SOMETHING ON OUR SIDEWALKS !        

Here's a nice recipe for those of you starting to have a lot of tomatoes in your gardens...  

Cherry Tomato Salad

Ingredients:
1/3 cup light or regular mayonnaise
2  teaspoons red wine vinegar
1  teaspoon Dijon mustard
1  pint cherry tomatoes, halved
1/4 cup red onions, very thinly sliced, then halved
2  tablespoons minced fresh parsley
salt and pepper, to taste

Whisk together the mayonnaise, vinegar and mustard in a
salad bowl. Add the tomatoes, onions and parsley, then
toss well. Season to taste.

He would have settled on a used truck, but everything she seemed to like was way out of their price range.  

"Look!" she said. "I want something that goes from 0 to 200 in 4 seconds or less. And my birthday is coming up. You could surprise me!"  

For her birthday, he bought her a brand new bathroom scale.

   Just like trying weed those pesky things we don't want in our garden, our lives sometimes need to be weeded out too...we have to dig deep around the roots of the problem   On some days, I have a bad habit of putting off the most important tasks that I must tackle. Finally, I force myself to start the project, but in a couple of days procrastination crops up again. If I stop and dig deeper around the edges of this habit, I find that it is rooted in a fear that I won’t do a good job or that I won’t adequately meet someone else’s expectations. What if I dig out my fear of failure and surrender it to God in prayer?

The first issue of The Farmer's Almanac was published in 1792 during George Washington's second term as president. It sold 3,000 copies and cost about nine cents.
