It’ll be another cool day here in northern Ohio today. Yesterday never got up in the 70’s at all but it seemed warmer as it was humid I suppose. Today will be another busy one and then we slow down to a creep at work for Thursday and Fridays . Those are the days that seem longer than all the rest because there is little of nothing to do. I guess I gotta be thankful that they keep paying me for 5 days of work when I really only do 3.

Friday after work I’ll head to the camper which has become the usual thing now to do for the weekend. April through October, with very few exceptions, that’s where I’ll be every weekend. I’m really thankful for the camper as now I have something to look forward to each week.

 Was your Mom difficult? I know mine was. We had the most difficult mother in the whole world! While other kids ate candy for breakfast, we had to have cereal, eggs, and toast. When others had a Pepsi and a Twinkie for lunch, we had to eat sandwiches. And you can guess our mother fixed us a dinner that was different from what other kids had, too.

Mother insisted on knowing where we were at all times. You'd think we were convicts in a prison. She had to know who our friends were, and what we were doing with them. She insisted that if we said we would be gone for an hour, we would be gone for an hour or less.

We were ashamed to admit it, but she had the nerve to break the Child Labor Laws by making us work. We had to wash the dishes, make the beds, learn to cook, vacuum the floor, do laundry, empty the trash and all sorts of cruel jobs. I think she would lie awake at night thinking of more things for us to do.

She always insisted on us telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. By the time we were teenagers, I think she could read our minds and I swear she had eyes in the back of her head.

Then, life was really tough! Mother wouldn't let our friends just honk the horn when they drove up. They had to come up to the door so she could meet them. While everyone else could date when they were 12 or 13, we had to wait until we were 16.

Because of our mother we missed out on lots of things other kids experienced. None of us have ever been caught shoplifting, vandalizing other's property or ever arrested for any crime. It was all her fault.

Now that we have left home, we are all educated, honest adults. We are doing our best to be difficult parents just like Mom was. I think that is what's wrong with the world today.

HAPPY TUESDAY !!

We had a beautiful Monday with temps in the 70’s and a nice breeze blowing. After work I managed to make a dent in the laundry which is always a good thing.

Maybe Wednesday night I can get a little cleaning done.

On my way to work yesterday I was greeted by a whole flock of geese crossing the road. There were lots and lots of little chicks following the big guys. They are in that area a lot and don’t care if you are bigger than them or not. Of course I didn’t have my camera. It would have made a good picture.

Today is entering data day at work and that always goes slowly, but it will keep me busy. Tonight should be our dulcimer get together and that will keep me laughing for sure.

BACK TO WORK !

Now that I’m all relaxed and refreshed I should be ready for a new work week for sure. The trouble is, of course, the adjustment of working again is not an easy one to make.

 On my calendar for the coming week is Tuesday night dulcimer with my friends and Thursday night Bible Study. Otherwise it will be a long 5 day work week as usual with a few quiet evenings in between.

DSIL found out this weekend that DS#2’s visit to the camper the 4th of July week will be ‘free’. The nice people at the campground are offering free stays to military personnel. That is true American Spirit for sure. I really will have to thank them for being so good to our military folks.

I hope your weekend was a great one and you are ready for a new week too!

After work today I’ll be heading for the campground and will be there til Sunday evening. It will be a great 3 – day weekend. Wednesday was one of those perfect summer days. Not too hot or too cold. Of course I was working, but hopefully there will be more to come before summer is over.

Today it will be a little more humid and a little hotter. We usually have a nice breeze blowing up on the hillside where we camp so that makes it very pleasant for sure.

13 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR LUCK THIS FRIDAY THE 13TH

(THAT’S TOMORROW)

The granddad of all superstitions, Friday the 13th is perceived as an abnormally ominous day. Many feel that there are numerous incidents and examples in history when a calamity befell someone foolhardy enough to challenge the number 13.

The ancient Hindus, as the story goes, started the whole thing when they avowed that 13 people at a table brought bad luck. Some trace the phobia to the fact that Christ died on a Friday, and that there were 13 at the Last Supper, one of whom betrayed Jesus. And more recently, there’s the move, Friday the 13th, which may fuel the superstition. Whatever you believe, this Friday is a 13th, so you may just want to do one of these things to keep bad luck from finding you!

1. Keep your fingers crossed – Making the sign of the Christian faith with your fingers is believed to prevent evil spirits from ruining your good fortune.

2. Knock on Wood – It was once believed that good spirits lived in trees and that by knocking on anything made from wood, we can call upon these spirits for protection against misfortune.

3. Find a four-leaf clover – Ancient druids believed shamrocks helped them to see evil spirits, providing the opportunity to avoid them.

4. Put your clothes on inside out – No one seems to know how this superstition originated, but the belief that backwards or inside out clothing brings good luck continues to be widespread – from children wearing their pajamas inside out in hopes of a snow day to baseball players and fans turning their caps inside out during important games, and more.

5. Look at the new moon over your right shoulder – The moon is central to many long-held superstitions, and the New Moon is seen as a ripe time for undertaking new enterprises. Whether those enterprises are successful or not depends on whether the New Moon is first seen over the right shoulder (good) or the left (bad).

6. Sleep facing south – The belief that sleeping with your head facing south promotes good health and fortune persists to this day, even among some doctors. The belief seems to be rooted in the Chinese art of feng shui, which attributes a causal connection between geographic placements and the movement of “qi,” or positive spiritual energy.

7. Break a clear, uncolored glass – While breaking a mirror is believed to usher in seven years of bad luck, thebreaking of a clear glass has traditionally been seen as a sign that you’ve averted some grave misfortune. The glass purportedly takes on the ill fortune in your place.

8. Walk in the rain – Anyone who’s ever been caught without his/her umbrella may dispute this one, but rain has always been a sign of good luck. This is probably because it is so important to the success of crops; before modern irrigation methods were widespread, a rainy season meant the difference between lean years and prosperous ones.

9. Sleep on un-ironed sheets – This is another superstition with uncertain origins. Luckily, few people iron their sheets these days, anyway.

10. Avoid cracks in the sidewalk – Most of us know the old rhyme “Step on a crack, break your mother’s back.” Whether the rhyme is the cause of, or a result of, this superstition is uncertain, though belief in it persists in many people today, even if subconsciously. Come to think of it, avoiding sidewalk cracks is probably a good policy for anyone who wants to avoid tripping.

11. Carry an acorn in your pocket – Acorns, the fruit of the sturdy oak tree, are an ancient symbol of fertility and long life.

12. Sneeze three times before breakfast – The number three has been seen as a lucky number in many cultures and religions throughout history. In Europe, where this superstition originated, the number’s association with the Christian trinity is an important association.

13. Pick up a pencil, a pin, a penny, or a piece of coal in the street – Finding, and claiming, any of these items has long been believed to portend good fortune. Some modern versions specify that only a heads-up penny is good luck. From an article in the Farmer’s Almanac

WE older folks can learn from the message that the Lord spoke to Joshua: Yes, you are old, but you have much to do yet. The Bible shows us more than once that God uses older people. When God revealed that Isaac would be born, Sarah was 90 and Abraham 100 years old.

Moses was 80 when he led the Israelites out of Egypt. Anna, in the New Testament, was 84 when she witnessed to others that the newborn Jesus was the Messiah.

HAPPY WEDNESDAY !!

OVER THE HUMP DAY !

For the most part Tuesday was a cloudy and sleepy kind of day for me. Monday night we had thunderstorms and our electricity went off for awhile. Knowing that I’d have to reset my alarm clock I choose to lay down on the couch in the front room because when the lights came back on I’d wake up. Well, I woke up at 12:00 then at 2:00, then reset the alarm and went to bed. Last night I went to bed early to try and catch up on the rest I missed out on.

I have to make sure all is done around the house tonight because after work tomorrow I leave for the camper. Friday is a vacation day for me.It’ll be a nice long 3 day weekend at the camper. The weather will be beautiful till Friday and then there is a chance of a shower or two on Saturday and then back to sunny on Sunday.

A new report suggests that being overweight is not as harmful as is commonly believed, and actually confers some surprising benefits.

Being five to ten pounds overweight could protect people from ailments ranging from tuberculosis to Alzheimer's disease, research indicates.

Those carrying 15 to 25 extra pounds are better able to recover from adverse conditions such as emphysema, pneumonia, and various injuries and infections, states the report. T

hirty to forty pounds of flab could help fend off breast, kidney, pancreatic, prostate, and colon cancer. And an extra fifty pounds on the scale may improve eyesight, reverse baldness, cure the common cold, and reduce global warming.

In general, the report concludes, overweight people are happier, more successful in business, smarter, and friendlier. The study was funded by a research grant from McDonald's, Burger King, Jack in the Box, Taco Bell, Domino's Pizza, Starbucks, Haagen Dazs, Sara Lee, and Krispy Kreme

 When children reach adulthood, most parents have an opinion about how their offspring have “turned out.” Some are proud of everything their kids have done, while other parents express misgivings or disappointment about the choices their children have made.

How can we continue a positive parenting role after the birds have left our nest? In 1 Corinthians 13, often called “the love chapter” of the Bible, Paul writes that the greatest gifts of speaking, understanding, and sacrificial service are worthless without love (vv.1-3).

Love itself is the foundation of winsome behavior, and its influence never ends. “Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails” (vv.4-8).

 When our children no longer seek our advice, they still value our love. In every stage of parenting, it’s not only what we say but what we do that counts.

Today we should see a little cool down from our 90 degree weather and then we’ll be in the 80’s the rest of the week. That is a little closer to normal or maybe I should say average June temperatures.

It is always nice though having the sunshine to brighten our days. It seems that everything is more cheerful. But if you live in northern Ohio, you’ll probably need an umbrella today.

Work is picking up again and things will begin to get busier in the office. Our men work more in the summer months than any other time. That always makes my days at work go by quicker too.

Monday wasn’t bad at all so today should be a good one too!

HAPPY MONDAY !!

Another fast but enjoyable weekend is now over and it is back to work once more. I’m always thankful for another day. It’s a new week and I’m sure new things will be coming my way. I’m always amazed that every day of my life I learn something new. There are pictures of my weekend on the GOOD MORNING SUNSHINE journal page if you want to see them just click on the link that is always at the end of this e-mail.

It was hot and sunny but we stayed cool in the pool and had fun. This will be a short work week as I have off on Friday for a vacation day. I’ll be heading for the camper right after work on Thursday. Saturday our Princess will be having her dance recital so DD and I are taking a break from camping to go to that too. I’m sure I’ll have lots more pictures to share next weekend.

THE MESSIAH IN DISGUISE

High in the mountains was a monastery that had once been known throughout the world. Its monks were pious, its students were enthusiastic. The chants from the monastery’s chapel deeply touched the hearts of people who came there to pray and meditate.

But, something had changed. Fewer and fewer young men came to study there; fewer and fewer people came for spiritual nourishment. The monks who remained became disheartened and sad. Deeply worried, the abbot of the monastery went off in search of an answer. Why had his monastery fallen on such hard times?

The abbot came to a guru, and he asked the master, “Is it because of some sin of ours that the monastery is no longer full of vitality?” “Yes,” replied the master, “it is the sin of ignorance.” “The sin of ignorance?” questioned the abbot. “Of what are we ignorant?” The guru looked at the abbot for a long, long time, and then he said, “One of you is the messiah in disguise. But, you are all ignorant of this.” Then, the guru closed his eyes, and he was silent. “

The messiah?” thought the abbot. “The messiah is one of us? Who could it be? Could it be Brother Cook? Could it be Brother Treasurer? Could it be Brother Bell-Ringer? Could it be Brother Vegetable Grower? “Which one? Which one? Every one of us has faults, failings, human defects. Isn’t the messiah supposed to be perfect? But, then, perhaps these faults and failings are part of his disguise. Which one? Which one?”

When the abbot returned to the monastery, he gathered all the monks together and told them what the guru had said. “One of us? The messiah? Impossible!” But, the master had spoken, and the master was never wrong. “One of us? The messiah? Incredible! But, it must be so. Which one? Which one? That brother over there? That one? That one?” Whichever one of the monks was the messiah, he was, surely, in disguise.

Not knowing who amongst them was the messiah, all the monks began treating each other with new respect. “You never know,” they thought, “he might be the one, so I had better deal with him kindly.”

It was not long before the monastery was filled with new found joy. Soon, new students came to learn, and people came from far and wide to be inspired by the chants of the kind, smiling monks. For once again, the monastery was filled with the spirit of love.
