HAPPY TUESDAY !!

It was a very quiet day at work yesterday. I cannot imagine how long the next 2 weeks are going to be. I have work to do, but without anyone around it makes for a long day…I left at 4:30 with no lunch hour . That’s a 9 and ½ hour day for me.

After work I did make it to the post office and sent the out of town babes their Easter stuff from me. It’s nothing very special but just something to let them know I’m thinking of them. This ‘long distance’ grand’ma’ helps to keep the post office in business for sure.

Today I think I’ll go out at lunch time and get gas for the car..The sign said our gas is now 3.36 a gallon…I hope it didn’t go up any more today. I used to drive a van and was glad to get my car so I’d have higher gas mileage. Now I’m paying the same as I was then for a fill up only I’m getting halfthe gas. Thankfully I no longer have the van.

The origin of crochet is up for grabs. China? Turkey? North Africa? The word "crochet" comes from the French work croc (meaning hook), but there is no record of this needlework before the 1800s. Written instructions were being published in the 1840s, but most patterns were handed down through family and friends. Girls were taught to crochet holding the hook like a pencil because it was considered graceful. They know today that holding the hook in the palm of your hand cuts down on carpal tunnel problems

 "Hey Dad," one of my kids asked the other day, "What was your favorite fast food when you were growing up?" "We didn't have fast food when I was growing up," I informed him. "All the food was slow." "C'mon, seriously. Where did you eat?" "It was a place called 'at home,'" I explained. "Grandma cooked every day and when Grandpa got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and if I didn't like what she put on my plate I was allowed to sit there until I did like it."

By this time, the kid was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious internal damage, so I didn't tell him the part about how I had to have permission to leave the table. But here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood if I figured his system could have handled it: Some parents NEVER owned their own house, wore Levis, set foot on a golf course, traveled out of the country or had a credit card.

In their later years they had something called a revolving charge card. The card was good only at Sears Roebuck. Or maybe it was Sears AND Roebuck. Either way, there is no Roebuck anymore. Maybe he died. My parents never drove me to soccer practice. This was mostly because we never had heard of soccer. I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed, (slow).

We didn't have a television in our house until I was 11, but my grandparents had one before that. It was, of course, black and white, but they bought a piece of colored plastic to cover the screen. The top third was blue, like the sky, and the bottom third was green, like grass. The middle third was red. It was perfect for programs that had scenes of fire trucks riding across someone's lawn on a sunny day. Some people had a lens taped to the front of the TV to make the picture look larger.

I was 13 before I tasted my first pizza, it was called "pizza pie." When I bit into it, I burned the roof of my mouth and the cheese slid off, swung down, plastered itself against my chin and burned that, too. It's still the best pizza I ever had.

We didn't have a car until I was 15. Before that, the only car in our family was my grandfather's Ford. He called it a "machine." I never had a telephone in my room. The only phone in the house was in the living room and it was on a party line. Before you could dial, you had to listen and make sure some people you didn't know weren't already using the line. Pizzas were not delivered to our home. But milk was.

All newspapers were delivered by boys and all boys delivered newspapers. I delivered a newspaper, six days a week. It cost 7 cents a paper, of which I got to keep 2 cents. I had to get up at 4 AM every morning. On Saturday, I had to collect the 42 cents from my customers. My favorite customers were the ones who gave me 50 cents and told me to keep the change. My least favorite customers were the ones who seemed to never be home on collection day.

 Movie stars kissed with their mouths shut. At least, they did in the movies. Touching someone else's tongue with yours was called French kissing and they didn't do that in movies. I don't know what they did in French movies. French movies were dirty and we weren't allowed to see them.

If you grew up in a generation before there was fast food, you may want to share some of these memories with your children or grandchildren. Just don't blame me if they bust a gut laughing. Growing up isn't what it used to be, is it?

 BACK TO WORK

 I’ve got my green on so I’m ready to start the day. I really do have a small portion of Irish in my family tree so I have to put my green on today to celebrate St.Patrick’s Day.

The week ahead should be a pretty good one weather wise. I see some temps in the 40’s here in the long range forecast and except for a couple of wet days midweek, we should also be seeing some sunshine. Maybe all our snow will actually melt before Easter. That would be a blessing

On my calendar besides work for this week is:

Thursday evening – Holy Thursday services at church

Saturday – Leave for DS#1’s house and will return on Sunday afternoon

There will be some long work days ahead for me as the boss is on vacation for 2 weeks and I’m the only one in the office…that will make for a few 10 hour days for sure. He said I could leave at 4:30 instead of 5 if there wasn’t anything going on so I’ll probably do just that.

Why do so many Irish names begin with "O'?"

I wonder how many people who will be affecting an Irish accent will know just what this name form is all about. It reflects a practice found in many cultures: the use of the "patronymic."

Last names originated in the Middle Ages when men, who embodied the continuity of the family, started to be identified by their relationship to their immediate ancestors. The son of David, for example, might take the name Davidson.

The Scots used "Mac," which meant "the son of," for this purpose. And so with the Irish and the "O'," except here it meant "the grandson of, " possibly because one of the first to use it, Teigue, grandson of Brian, High-King of the Irish in the 11th century, started to call himself Ua Briain (Gaelic for O'Brian) after his famous grandfather.

HAPPY FINALLY FRIDAY !!

We were blessed with another partly cloudy day and temps in the 40’s yesterday so our snow is still slowly melting. We have more of a chance of rain today and tomorrow, but I’m hoping it is only sprinkles now and then.

I was beginning to wonder if this work week would ever come to an end. Tomorrow is our family Easter celebration. My holidays with my children are always before the actual holiday so that they can spend some time with the other sides of their family too! When you have married children, you have to divide the time with them too. It doesn’t matter to me which day we celebrate…it’s always fun no matter.

This evening I think I’m going out to dinner with my ‘old camping buddy’ and her hubby. We were supposed to go last Friday, but due to the snow storm we moved it to today. They are members of the American Legion and their fish fry is always good, so that’s what I’ll be having for sure.

The driver of a huge tractor-trailer lost control of his rig, he plowed into an empty tollbooth and smashed it to pieces. He climbed down from his truck and looked at the wreckage, not quite sure what to do.

Within a matter of minutes, another truck pulled up and unloaded a crew of workers. The men picked up each broken piece of the former tollbooth and spread some kind of white creamy substance on it. Then they began fitting the pieces together.

In less than an hour, they had the entire tollbooth reconstructed and good as new. "Astonishing!" the truck driver said to the crew chief. "What was that white stuff you used to get all of the pieces together?" The crew chief said, Oh, that was tollgate booth paste

HAPPY THURSDAY !!

I had a nice surprise on Wednesday evening. My youngest sister came by with a birthday gift and my next door sister came over too so we got to spend a couple of hours together. We don’t get too many times when the 3 of us can do that.

Our snow is slowly melting. I can actually see that it has gone down about a foot now by the back patio. We still have about 3 feet left. The sunshine and warmth of the past two days really helped. Today we may see some showers. I hope not too much as flooding will become a problem.

Every Saturday morning Grandpa Walt found himself babysitting his three grandchildren.. .all boys. The kids always wanted to play ''war'' and Grandpa somehow always got coaxed into the game.

His daughter came to pick up the kids early one Saturday and witnessed Grandpa take a fake shot as Jason pointed a toy gun and yelled, Bang!'' HAPPY WEDNESDAY !!

OVER THE HUMP DAY!

It’s a good feeling to know that we are half way through this work week. We had another party cloudy day on Tuesday so some more of our snow had a chance to melt.

 Work was pretty busy and today it should move right along too as I’ve plenty to do. I heard from DS#4 on Monday evening and he has plans to meet up with DS#2 on a business trip he has to go on. I’m sure they will both enjoy seeing each other. DS#2 doesn’t get a chance to see any family very often as the military keeps him on the go so much.

DS#4 does a lot of traveling too, but for his work not the military. Rarely does he happen to be where there is some family to visit, so this trip will be more enjoyable than some he takes. My babes were all very close growing up and they sure do love it when they can be together. I do too !

It was very foggy going to work yesterday and I suppose it will be again. With a little warmer temps and snow melting, the conditions are just right for it.

Top of the Mornin’ to ya!

I know it’s not St. Patrick’s Day yet, but I have such a mix of graphics to use for this month…Spring, Easter and St. Patrick’s Day that I thought I might as well use them.

There are lots of mixed ideas of when the St. Patrick’s holiday is going to be celebrated this year. I think I read that the US Bishops suggested Friday the 14th instead of Monday which is the beginning of Holy Week. Some said they were going to have parades and such on Sunday, but that is Palm Sunday so that’s not such a good idea. Some will still celebrate the day on Monday as always…on the 17th.

So here we have it a little bit of wearin’ of the Green for you today. I’ll probably be putting some more ‘green’ in my newsletter though Saturday.

Monday wasn’t so bad at all. I got to work just fine. The roads were clear and so was the parking lot at work. The weather warmed up to the mid 30’s so a wee bit of that white stuff melted and the sun popped out a few times too !

On the calendar for this week is Bible Study on Thursday evening and Stations of the Cross at church on Friday evening. Then come Saturday we’ll be having our Family Easter Feast. On the actual Sunday of Easter I’ll be at DS#1’s house as DDIL#1 will be joining our church at the Easter Vigil Service. Otherwise, except for work, it looks to be a quiet week.

HAPPY MONDAY !!

BACK TO WORK

That was a very fast weekend…I guess I’m ready to go to work again. The roads are all clear from the huge amounts of snow that we had and we can just wait now for it all to melt. They are already warning of flooding in many areas.

I finally got out for my Birthay dinner with DD and her hubby and DS#5 and his wife on Sunday evening. We’ve gone to Red Lobster now for several years on my birthday and we even sat at the same table we were at last time we were there. The food is always good for sure.

The snow mountains in the parking lot at the mall were really big. I forgot to take my camera so I didn’t get any pictures but all and all had really good time. I always have fun with my babes.

Last Century's Wash-Day Instructions

Years ago a Kentucky grandmother gave a new bride the following recipe for washing clothes. It appears below just as it was written and, despite the spelling, has a bit of philosophy. This is exactly as written and preserved in an old scrap book (with spelling intact).

1. Bilt fire in backyard to heat kettle of rain water.

2. Set tubs so smoke wont blow in eyes if wind is pert.

3. Shave one hole cake of lie soap in bilin water.

4. Sort things, make 3 piles. 1 pile white, 1 pile colored, 1 pile work britches and rags.

5. To make starch, stir flour in cool water to smooth, then thin down with bilin water.

6. Take white things, rub dirty spots on board, scrub hard, and then bile. Rub colored don't bile, just rinch and starch.

 7. Take things out of kettle with broomstick handle, then rinch, and starch.

8. Hang old rags on fence.

9. Spread tea towels on grass.

10. Pore rinch water in flower bed.

11. Scrub porch with hot soapy water.

12. Turn tubs upside down.

13. Go put on clean dress, smooth hair with hair combs. Brew cup of tea, sit and rock a spell and count your blessings.

(Tape this over your washer and dryer and next time when you think things seem bleak, read it again and give thanks for your blessings!)

John 11:1-45

Lazarus was bound up with the trappings of death. His sisters were immersed in the customs of grieving. Jesus enters the scene, visibly moved with sorrow for his friends. He calls from a distressed heart, asking his Father to restore Lazarus’ human life.

As Lazarus emerges, the astounded crowd witnesses the powerful love between the Father and the Son. Jesus’ subsequent instruction—‘Unbind him and let him go!’—brings unparallelled scenes of joyous freedom to mind.

Imagine that young man greeting his bereaved sisters. Imagine what he chooses to do in his life in the days to come. The life of Lazarus is changed in a most radical way.

Our spirits too can be trapped and deadened within the circumstances of our lives. Build-ups of sadness, anger and resentment can hamper the happy flowering of our spiritual selves.

Prayers to Jesus in the Father’s name are a certain solution towards coming alive again.
