HAPPY THURSDAY !!

I always feel better after I get Wednesday out of the way. Now there is only one more day of work til the weekend! Tonight is my Bible study and as much as I enjoy it I’m not looking forward to going out in the cold again after I get home from work, but I will.

Our weather for this evening says: Additional snow accumulation less than an inch. Lows around 7 above. Looking ahead at the long range forecast we may see some warmer temps and some sun this weekend. That will be a welcome relief. The days are getting longer and as the weeks go by we’ll be warming up for sure.

TODAY IS…BARLEY PUDDING DAY

Barley is a hearty grain high in protein and carbohydrates. It is most often seen in soups or stews and usually compared to rice. Using it to make pudding is a traditional Irish method that turns this grain into a delicious dessert

APPLE BARLEY PUDDING

1 quart water

4 Tbsp Pearl barley

1 1/2 lb apples - peeled, cored and sliced

3 Tbsp sugar

3/4 cup heavy cream

1 Tbsp lemon juice

1. Put the barley in the water and bring to the boil. Add the sliced apples and continue cooking over medium-low heat until the barley and apples are soft.

2. Pour into a blender and blend until smooth. Return mixture to the saucepan.

3. Add sugar and lemon juice. Bring to the boil again.

Remove from heat, allow to cool, and then chill.

Stir in cream right before serving.

A church choir was putting on a car wash to raise money for a special trip. They made a large sign that read: CAR WASH FOR CHOIR TRIP. On the scheduled Saturday, business was very good. But, by two o'clock the sky clouded, the rain poured, and there were hardly any customers.

Finally, one of the singers had an idea. She printed a very large poster with the words: WE WASH. GOD RINSES (Next to the words was an arrow pointing skyward.)

OVER THE HUMP DAY!

More snow and more cold are headed our way today. Another day of layers on to keep warm too!

I had a really nice dinner out with DD and her hubby last night. The little restaurant just down the street from them had a special deal where they donated 5% of our tab to our church school. So we helped the school and also enjoyed a delicious meal. Our church bulletin had a special coupon in it to take so they would get the credit for it.

I found some decorative things for my camper when I went out at lunch yesterday. I decided that I’d go with the ‘beach’ theme there as it will hopefully be my ‘trip to the beach’ for a long while. I got some shell wind chimes and paper plates napkins and glasses with the beach theme on them too. I even found a sign that says ‘WELOME TO PARADISE’ .

I’ve got several boxes already prepared to take camping. Besides the necessities I now have my decorative items and my new ‘beach’ clothes I got when we went shopping on Sunday.

Can you tell I am ready for the camping season to begin?

Have you ever noticed how the seasons of the year mirror the seasons of life? In spring we see beautiful buds and blossoms on plants and trees. The blossoms on many of these plants and trees are so beautiful, and they are the promise of beautiful flowers and ripe fruit during the summer.

In the same way, babies are so beautiful and are the springtime promises of the ripened fruit of adulthood in the summers of our lives. Then in some parts of the world comes autumn, the most spectacular season of all. Jack Frost hits the trees and they turn red, coral, gold and maroon before the winds blow them to the ground.

For many of us, the autumn September Song of life is a colorful time of enjoyment. Then comes winter, when in many places all looks dead. Those trees and plants may look dead, but they are not, for by Easter time, they are beginning to bud.

How wonderful that we know that Christ's Easter promises us eternal life! Oh, my friend, don't waste these seasons in anxiety, anger, loneliness or fear. Enjoy your childhood of spring and fruitfulness of summer. Don't let your September Song turn into a dirge of complaints and sourness.

When you stay close to the Lord through prayer, Bible study and fellowship with other believers, you can experience "the joy of the Lord" in all the seasons of your life.

Our ‘Prince Charming’ is 4 years old today . As usual he is one of my grand’babes’ that lives too far away to be celebrating with him. I always mention my family’s birthdays here in this newsletter, but there are many that read this that aren’t mentioned and I do wish you blessings on your special day too !

As predicted, we had our snow yesterday. Not much accumulated on the ground, but very often it looked like one of those snow globes outside. Big white flakes were swirling around as it was very windy and cold I might add.

We have a 50 % chance of more of that white stuff today and it’ll be a blustery one they say. A good day to put on my ‘winter silks’ for sure!

A Pastor had a kitten that climbed up a tree in his backyard and then was afraid to come down. The pastor coaxed and offered warm milk. The kitty would not come down.

The tree was not sturdy enough to climb, so the pastor decided that if he tied a rope to his car and drove away so that the tree bent down, he could then reach up and get the kitten. He did all this, checking his progress in the car frequently, then figured if he went just a little bit further, the tree would be bent sufficiently for him to reach the kitten.

But as he moved a little further forward The tree went "boing!" and the kitten instantly sailed through the air - out of sight. The pastor felt terrible. He walked all over the neighborhood asking people if they'd seen a little kitten. Nobody had seen a stray kitten. So, he prayed, "Lord, I just commit this kitten to your keeping," and went on about his business.

A few days later he was at the grocery store, and met one of his church members. He happened to look into her shopping cart and was amazed to see cat food. Now this woman was a cat hater and everyone knew it, so he asked her, "Why are you buying cat food when you hate cats so much?" She replied, "You won't believe this," and told him how her little girl had been begging her for a cat, but she kept refusing.

Then a few days before, the child had begged again, so the Mom finally told her little girl, "Well, if the Lord gives you a cat, I'll let you keep it." She told the pastor, "I watched my child go out in the backyard, get on her knees, and ask Lord for a cat. And really, Pastor, you won't believe this, but I saw it with my own eyes A kitten suddenly came flying out of the blue sky, with its paws spread out, and landed right on our tree in the backyard.

HAPPY MONDAY !!

BACK TO WORK

I had a great day sale shopping with DD yesterday and I’ll now be one of the best dressed campers around as I found lots of tee shirts and sweat pants etc on sale for really cheap prices. I even found a pair of my favorite flip flops at one of the shoe stores and they were cheaper than the ones I bought when we went to visit DS#4 last Spring too.

The sunshine managed to come out in the afternoon and it got in the 50’s so it was nice being out. Today they are still saying we could see more snow. Winter is not over by a long shot.

On the calendar for the week ahead is:

Tuesday evening – dinner out with DD and her hubby

Thursday evening – Bible Study

Today at work will be really quiet as lots of people are off due to the President’s Day holiday.

A cactus stood all alone in the desert, wondering why it was stuck in the middle of nowhere. "I do nothing but stand here all day," it sighed. "What use am I? I'm the ugliest plant in the desert. My spines are thick and prickly, my leaves are rubbery and tough, my skin is thick and bumpy. I can't offer shade or juicy fruit to any passing traveler. I don't see that I'm any use at all."

All it did was stand in the sun day after day, growing taller and fatter. Its spines grew longer and its leaves tougher, and it swelled here and there until it was lumpy and lopsided all over. It truly was strange- looking. "I wish I could do something useful," it sighed.

By day hawks circled high overhead. "What can I do with my life?" the cactus called. Whether they heard or not, the hawks sailed away. At night the moon floated into the sky and cast its pale glow on the desert floor. "What good can I do with my life?" the cactus called. The moon only stared coldly as it mounted its course.

A lizard crawled by, leaving a little trail in the sand with its tail. "What worthy deed can I do?" the cactus called. "You?" the lizard laughed, pausing a moment. "Worthy deed? Why, you can't do anything! The hawks circle way overhead, tracing delicate patterns for us all to admire.

The moon hangs high like a lantern at night, so we can see our ways home to our loved ones. Even I, the lowly lizard, have something to do. I decorate the sands with these beautiful brushstrokes as I pull my tail along. Buy you? You do nothing but get uglier every day."

And so it went on, year after year. At last the cactus grew old, and it knew its time was short. "Oh, Lord," it cried out, "I've wondered so long, and I've tried so hard. Forgive me if I've failed to find something worthy to do. I fear that now it's too late."

 But just then the cactus felt a strange stirring and unfolding, and it knew a surge of joy that erased all despair. At its very tip, like a sudden crown, a glorious flower suddenly opened in bloom. Never had the desert known such a blossom. Its fragrance perfumed the air far and wide and brought happiness to all passing by.

The butterflies paused to admire its beauty, and that night even the moon smiled when it rose to find such a treasure. The cactus heard a voice. "You have waited long," the Lord said. "The heart that seeks to do good reflects My glory, and will always bring something worthwhile to the world, something in which all can rejoice - even if for only a moment."

One of the biggest reasons that we fall back into old habits, those decisions that leave us in conflict with how we should love God and neighbor, is that we try and do it alone.

 Readjusting our ethical compass should not be done in a vacuum; we need someone else who will applaud us when we take good steps, and admonish, and encourage us when we come up short When you have someone who holds you accountable, you are reminded on a regular basis what it is that God has set for you to do.

 Maybe that person is your spouse, a child, a friend, a co-worker, or a spiritual guide. Whatever your case may be, search out that person and enlist his or her help. When you do this, you will be amazed at how clearly God begins to speak, because now God is able to speak though that person.

You want to make right decisions? Make sure that someone holds you accountable!

HAPPY FRIDAY !!

Yesterday, Valentines Day, turned out to be a somewhat calm and sunny day. Temps got up to the mid 30’s and I think that is more the way Winter should be. The ‘Newlyweds’ sent a beautiful bunch of tulips to me at work and that was a wonderful surprise. I left them there so I can look at a touch of ‘Springtime’ at work today, but I’ll bring them home this evening.

Today after work I’m going to stop at a church down the street and pick up a fish dinner for supper. They had their sign out when I came home from work yesterday saying they were having baked fish all the Fridays of Lent. I got their dinners a few times last year and they were very good.

Hopefully, I’ll make it to the Stations of the Cross this evening at 7. I didn’t go last week because it was very cold and snowy out. However, it is supposed to snow again today so we’ll see…

Minnesota Ghost

This happened about a month ago just outside of Wilmar, a little town in the back country of Minnesota, and while it sounds like an Alfred Hitchcock take, it's real.

This out of state traveler was on the side of the road, hitchhiking on a real dark night in the middle of a thunderstorm. Time passed slowly and no cars went by. It was raining so hard he could hardly see his hand in front of his face. Suddenly he saw a car moving slowly, approaching and appearing ghostlike in the rain. It slowly and silently crept toward him and stopped.

Wanting a ride real bad the guy jumped in the car and closed the door; only then did he realize that there was nobody behind the wheel, and no sound of an engine to heard over the rain. Again the car crept slowly forward and the guy was terrified, too scared to think of jumping out and running.

The guy saw that the car was approaching a sharp curve and, still to scared to jump out, he started to pray and begin begging for his life; he was sure the ghost car would go off the road and into a nearby lake and he would surely drown. But just before the curve a shadowy figure appeared at the drivers window and a hand reached in and turning the steering wheel, guiding the car safely around the bend.

Then, just as silently, the hand disappeared through the window and the hitchhiker was alone again! Paralyzed with fear, the guy watched the hand reappear every time they reached a curve. Finally the guy, scared to near death, had all he could take and jumped out of the car and ran and ran, into a town, into Wilmar.

Wet and in shock, he went into a bar and voice quivering, ordered two shots of whiskey, then told everybody about his supernatural experience. A silence enveloped and everybody got goose bumps when they realized the guy was telling the truth ( and not just some drunk).

About a half an hour later two guys walked into the bar and one says to the other, " Look Ole, ders dat idiot that rode in our car when we wuz pushin' it in the rain."

 DID YOU SEE IT? I did, we actually had some blue skies and sunshine yesterday. I even think we are supposed to get some more today. It was still cold, but the sunshine does make you feel warmer some how.

My desk is clear at work and I could have 2 days off, but I still have to go as I’m counted on to be there in case my boss has to go out on business calls. I never know from day to day when that will be so I always try to show up.

It will be a day of data entry and cleaning out old files . Not very exciting for sure. The mail man brought me a few Valentines this week. It’s always fun to get them especially the ones signed by the grand’babes’. A big ‘THANK YOU’ to those that sent them.

 I do hope you all have a wonderful Valentines Day !

One spring morning I was walking along a path in the woods near my home. Suddenly a rabbit bound across the path. This rabbit looked a bit roughed up; its fur was sparse and uneven. As I stepped closer, the rabbit casually hopped to a grove of small trees a few yards away.

As I resumed my walk, a slight movement in the grass caught my eye. Stooping down, I saw four tiny creatures in a clump of grass. They were rabbit kits. Only two and a half inches long, hairless, and blind, they were totally helpless. Their nest had been dug down into the earth.

Leaves and grass had been arranged to form a camouflaged home. But the most striking feature was that the inside of the nest had been completely lined with fur--rabbit fur.

Then it hit me.

That scraggy-furred rabbit I had just seen was the mother of this precious litter. Not only had she carried her young through pregnancy, endured labor and delivery pains, prepared a nest, and patiently nursed and protected them to this point, she had also given of herself. Painfully, she had pulled out great clumps of fur to line the nest, thus providing a soft, warm environment for her fragile kits.

HAPPY WEDNESDAY !!

What a crazy day we had yesterday – weather wise that is. When I left for work the roads weren’t bad and we only had an inch or so of snow on the ground, but they kept saying we would still get more and we did. It snowed all day.

The roads were terrible and I was beginning to think the road crews went on strike as I never saw any til late afternoon. On the way home it stated raining ice pellets and the roads were slippery.

I made a trip to the grocery store at lunch time because I was hungry for a Rueben Sandwich and because they needed some supplies in the office. I’d gotten some good bread on the weekend for my Rueben, but they had no corned beef. So I got the corned beef and for supper last night I made my sandwich. It was good too ! I also made one to take in my lunch today, so I’ll be having a double treat. Usually I wait for St. Patrick’s day for that, but when I saw the good bread I got a craving and now it is satisfied.

Drive safely and keep warm !

There, Jesus changed right in front of them. His face shined like the sun. And his clothes were as white as sunlight. Suddenly, the three followers saw Moses and Elijah talking with Jesus. As the old saying goes: "Seeing is believing." People love to entertained with the spectacular and the unusual. Illusionists and magicians prosper from the seemingly impossible and improbable. A gloss reading of this gospel tempts us to place the Transfiguration in the stories of the amazing.

That, however, would do an injustice to the impact of the story. For its impact lies not in the appearance of Jesus (as important as that was) but in the faith life of the Peter, James, and John. Yes, the transfiguration amazed Peter, James, and John. The amazement, however, led to fear of losing control and the peace that came with trusting God, not the entertaining awes of simple disbelief.

The amazement helped change Jesus disciples from common fishermen to uncommon apostles. In small ways and large, Jesus constantly calls to us for a deeper walk with him. Do we heed the call and take the chance?
