HAPPY SUNDAY !!

I’m up and got that good coffee right here beside me and am ready to start another day. It is R& R day once more and I’ll be going off to church as usual.

The day here will be a very cold one, but I’ve got my ‘winter silks’, my flannels and lots of layers on to keep me warm. The weatherman said yesterday that we were close to breaking a record for days without sunshine for February.

The sun did make anappearance so I guess we’ll not be breaking any records. I can certainly tell that the sun is missing in my life. Last week I made the effort to go to bed earlier and I did for at least 2 days. I found myself waking up several times during the night, I usually sleep pretty soundly and so for the rest of the week I went up to bed around 9 as usual.

I think that 8:00 was just too early and that I just need some sunshine and not more sleep. I’m trying to hang on and I know that once the ‘Ides of March’ (15th) comes I’ll be on the uphill swing. That seems for me to be the turning point .

I heard from DS#2 yesterday and he’ll be off on a short trip this week related to his job. He hopes to be able to see his children too. I think DS#4 is traveling also, if not this week it will be soon. He does a lot of traveling for work too. Both of them are in my prayers for safe travels.

HAPPY THURSDAY !!

We are now back to our colder weather and probably will have a little snow. There was a lot of flooding in our area and the old DIY building that now houses a flea market had it’s roof collapse. Thankfully no one was in it at the time.

 DD’s basement had a great flood too and I think she may be ready to build an ark. Thankfully they had some helpers in the way of one of my nieces and her hubby.

So even though we had some rough times of it in our area, there were some blessings too.

I got word from my morning BK gal that our South Side Mall will become a Burlington Coat Factory, so that is good news too. It’s amazing what I find out stopping at Burger King on the way to work.

There was a woman who had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and had been given three months to live. So as she was getting her things "in order," she contacted her pastor and had him come to her house to discuss certain aspects of her final wishes.

She told him which songs she wanted sung at the service, what scriptures she would like read, and what outfit she wanted to be buried in. The woman also requested to be buried with her favorite Bible. Everything was in order and the pastor was preparing to leave when the woman suddenly remembered something very important to her.

"There's one more thing," she said excitedly. "What's that?" came the pastor's reply. "This is very important," the woman continued. "I want to be buried with a fork in my right hand."

The pastor stood looking at the woman, not knowing quite what to say. "That surprises you, doesn't it?" the woman asked. "Well, to be honest, I'm puzzled by the request," said the pastor.

The woman went on to explain to the pastor.

At the funeral people were walking by the woman's casket and they saw the pretty dress she was wearing, her favorite Bible and the fork placed in her right hand.

Over and over, the pastor heard the question "What's with the fork?" And over and over he smiled. During his message, the pastor told the people how he could not stop thinking about the fork and told them that they probably would not be able to stop thinking about it either.

He then told the people what the woman had said shortly before she died. "In all my years of attending church socials and potluck dinners, I always remember that when the dishes of the main course were being cleared, someone would inevitably lean over and say, ‘Keep your fork'. It was my favorite part because I knew that something better was coming . . . like velvety chocolate cake or deep dish apple pie.

Something wonderful, and with substance! So, I just want people to see me there in that casket with a fork in my hand and I want them to wonder ‘What's with the fork?'. Then I want you to tell them: ‘Keep your fork . . . the best is yet to come.'

HAPPY WEDNESDAY !!

This will be a busy long day for me. After work I have an appointment for a hair cut and then at 7 in the evening, we have services at church for Ash Wednesday. The rain is supposed to continue today, but it will get colder and by evening the precipitation will probably turn to snow.

On the news Tuesday evening I heard that our Value City Dept. store is going to be closing. We fondly called this the ‘Southside Mall’. Over the years we’ve found a lot of bargains there and it will be sadly missed. Things are constantly changing in our world and it is not all good for sure.

Our little town once had a downtown full of stores, now those stores are at the Mall. The Mall even has stores closing in it too. Dillards, a big store, closed last year and we wonder what will come next. As for me, I’ll probably do more and more of my shopping on theinternet.

On Ash Wednesday, we enter a time that can be somewhat dark as we consider our lives and the need for repentance. As we travel through Lent, we do well to keep our eyes on the light we know.

The things we want the most can sometimes be the worst for us. This principle often applies to material possessions.

Our dog Dusty learned this principle the hard way. She loved to chase the squirrels that came into our yard. If one appeared, she took after it in a flash, chasing it up the maple tree and barking at it furiously. Although she chased them for 6 years, she never caught one. But all that changed one winter day.

A squirrel warmed by the sun was out in the yard, and Dusty went after it. With snow on the ground, the squirrel couldn't scamper as fast as usual - and Dusty caught it! She finally had what she always wanted, but soon wished she didn't. The terrified squirrel wrapped itself around Dusty's nose, kicked her throat furiously with its hind feet, and bit her under the chin. Dusty couldn't let go fast enough.

She came out of the fracas with a deep gash and several nasty scratches. I've noticed now that even though she still chases squirrels, she makes sure they get away.

You can see the point. If we insist on getting what we want - wealth, fame, love, or whatever - it could hurt us. If it's illegitimate, it surely will. Let's learn the lesson of the squirrel.

HAPPY TUESDAY !!

Today is ‘Fat Tuesday’ and in our neck of the woods it is also ‘Paczki Day’. These delicious donut–like delights are baked by a bakery near by and I stopped yesterday and got my supply for today.

Traditionally they are served the day before Ash Wednesday. Polish people created paczki by taking all remnant baking supplies in the house, baked it in to round balls and filled them with lekvar (prune) or apricot filing or just ate them plain coated with sugar. Today people around the world enjoy paczki by the dozens.

I didn’t get dozens but just a few to satisfy the craving until they make them again next year. I guess I’m fat enough so maybe during Lent I can give up a little and loose some of these pounds. We’ll see…

The oldest known shoe was found in an Egyptian tomb dated 2000 B.C. It was a sandal made out of woven papyrus - the main footwear of ancient people living in warm climates. After studying the ways people sneeze, Atlanta-based behavior expert Patti Wood and Steven Lamm, clinical assistant professor of medicine at New York University, drew a conclusion: Sneezers come in four main personality types (see below).

Which sneeze is best? "The healthiest way to sneeze," Lamm says, "is in one of the more 'contained' styles, such as the turn-away sneeze." Wood explains why: "A sneeze expels air from the nose at 100 miles per hour, sprays 100,000 bacteria and travels as far as any wind current."

Making the right decision is not easy. There are so many portions of our world that pull at us saying, “No one will know if you lie,” or “If you don’t look out for yourself, no one else will,” and “What’s the big deal?”.

We are bombarded with examples of people who cut this or that corner and seem to be rewarded for it. However, we must always ask the question, “Is it really worth it? Is the end result, whatever it may be, really worth putting someone else in harm’s way?

As we read our scripture today, I hope that you can answer that question with a definitive ‘no’. The ethic that we should live by is not, “Me at all costs”. Instead, it is a life that is rooted in service: to our God, and to all those with whom we come into contact.

To make the right decisions in our lives, we need to place what we are doing up against the barometer of this ethic Making life choices that are God filled are not easy, but they are right. Strive to do what is right as opposed to doing that which does as little wrong as possible. God wants us to shine as examples of love, honesty, and integrity

HAPPY MONDAY !!

We are warmer here in Northern Ohio today and will be until about Wednesday when the cold will come back, but we won’t have the bitter winds and below normal temps that cause me to put the ‘winter silks’ on.

We’ll be having some rain today and when I looked at the long range forecast for the week, I saw very little of that ‘sunshine’ that I so need. I’ll be eating my oranges and hoping to get a little extra ‘C’ that way.

I think I’ve been fighting off some kind of bug as I haven’t felt real great, but then again I really haven’t been sick either.

On the calendar for the week ahead is:

Wednesday: Hair cut after work

Go to church and get my ‘ashes’

Thursday:

Bible Study in the evening

Friday Evening: Stations of the Cross

Since Lent will begin on Wednesday, I plan to spend more time at church—we’ll see how it goes.

A little boy was walking down a dirt road after church one Sunday afternoon when he came to a crossroads where he met a little girl coming from the other direction. "Hello," said the little boy. "Hi," replied the little girl.

"Where are you going?" asked the little boy. "I've been to church this morning and I'm on my way home," answered the little girl. "I'm also on my way home from church. Which church do you go to?" asked the little boy. "I go to the Baptist church back down the road," replied the little girl. "What about you?"

"I go to the Methodist church back at the top of the hill," replied the little boy. They discover that they are both going the same way so they decided that they'd walk together. They came to a low spot in the road where spring rains had partially flooded the road, so there was no way that they could get across to the other side without getting wet.

"If I get my new Sunday dress wet, my Mom's going to skin me alive," said the little girl. "My Mom'll tan my hide, too, if I get my new Sunday suit wet," replied the little boy. "I tell you what I think I'll do," said the little girl. "I'm gonna pull off all my clothes and hold them over my head and wade across."

 "That's a good idea,"replied the little boy. "I'm going to do the same thing with my suit." So they both undressed and waded across to the other side without getting their clothes wet.

They were standing there in the sun waiting to drip dry before putting their clothes back on, when the little boy finally remarked ... "You know, I never realized before just how much difference there really is between a BAPTISTand a METHODIST!!!

HAPPY SUNDAY !!

I’ll be off to church a little later this morning, but right now I’m enjoying the good cup of coffee and a nice slow start to the day.

I stayed in all of yesterday and with very few exceptions got a lot of needed rest.

It could be that I’ll have to make a stop at the store after church as I seem to be out of coffee. Usually I have a nice supply on hand, but not today and I can’t start the day without it for sure.

Today should be a nice quiet Sunday here. It always is. The critters and I pretty much don’t make much noise.

HAPPY SATURDAY !!

Opps ! I guess I made a mistake (again) My DSIL informed me that yesterday instead of FRIDAY I had HAPPY TUESDAY !! in my greeting. I guess that shows you how tired I was come the end of the work week.

I’ve got to say that I’m so glad that there is nothing special going on this weekend, I need my rest. There is lots to do around here, but what ever I get done it will be slowly and with plenty of breaks in between.

I’m hoping we see some sunshine today, that might help !

TODAY IS…CANDLEMAS AND GROUNDHOGS’ DAY

The folklore of the groundhog and his shadow began in the 1500s with German farmers. The legend said if the groundhog saw his shadow and was frightened back into his hole, they should not plant their crops since there would be 6 more weeks of winter. Scientific studies over a 60 year period show the groundhog is right only 28% of the time - about the same as your tv weatherman

Candlemas was originally a Celtic festival celebrating the fact that the days were getting longer and spring was not far off. The Christian church expanded this festival of light to commemorate the purification of the Virgin Mary and her presentation of the infant Jesus in the Temple. Since the traditional Candlemas celebration anticipated the planting of crops, a central focus of the festivities was the forecasting of either an early spring or a lingering winter. Sunshine on Candlemas was said to indicate the return of winter. Similarly, "When the wind’s in the east on Candlemas Day / There it will stick till the second of May."

A bear brought the forecast to the people of France and England, while those in Germany looked to a badger for a sign. In the 1800s, German immigrants to Pennsylvania brought their Candlemas legends with them. Finding no badgers but lots of groundhogs, or woodchucks, there, they adapted the New World species to fit the lore.

Our scripture today reminds us that we belong to the Lord, so that should make us lighthearted. Unfortunately some of us go around looking far from that. Sometime when you walk through the Mall, notice the faces of people you pass. You'll probably see very few who really look lighthearted. We get caught up in life's concerns and forget our many blessings
