We had more snow on Saturday and are beginning to wonder if Spring will ever really be here. Surely it will warm up soon! I’m off to church and then home again to finish up many things here at my house.

Next Sunday is our family celebration and I have lots to do for that.

TODAY IS…ZOO LOVERS DAY

It was about 1500 B.C. when Queen Hatshepsut of Egypt built the first zoo. Many private zoos were kept by rulers in Africa, India, and China between 1,000 and 400 B.C. - and a "school" zoo was built by the Greeks to study animal and plant life. But, modern zoos weren't deleveoped until the 1400's when European explorers came to the New World. When they took strange animals back home with them, public display zoos were born.

From earliest times, and in most cultures, the egg signified rebirth and resurrection. The Egyptians buried eggs in their tombs. The Greeks placed eggs atop graves. Given as gifts by the ancient Greeks, Persians, and Chinese at their spring festivals, the egg also appears in pagan mythology, where we read of the Sun-Bird being hatched from the "World Egg".

The ancient Saxons celebrated the return of spring with a festival commemorating their goddess of offspring and of springtime — "Eastre" — through her earthly symbol, the rabbit. Eggs were wrapped with gilt or gold leaf, while peasants often dyed their eggs.

The tinting was achieved by boiling the eggs with certain flowers, leaves, log wood chips, or the cochineal insect. Spinach leaves or anemone petals were considered best for green; the bristly gorse blossom for yellow; and log wood for rich purple and the cochineal for scarlet.

In parts of Germany during the early 1880s, Easter eggs substituted for birth certificates. An egg was dyed a solidcolor, then a design, which included the recipient’s name and birth date, was etched into the shell with a needle or sharp tool.

Such Easter eggs were honored in law courts as evidence of identity and age. Decorating and coloring eggs for Easter was the custom in England during the middle ages. The household accounts of Edward I, for the year 1290, recorded an expenditure of eighteen pence for four hundred and fifty eggs to be gold-leafed and colored for Easter gifts.

Easter’s most valuable eggs were hand crafted in the 1880s. Made by the great goldsmith Peter Carl Faberge, they were commissioned by Czar Alexander III of Russia as gifts for his wife, Czarina Maria Feodorovna. The first Faberge egg, presented in 1886, measured two and a half inches long and had a deceptively simple exterior. Inside the white enamel shell, though, was a golden yolk, which when opened revealed a gold hen with ruby eyes. The hen itself could be opened, by lifting the beak, to expose a tiny diamond replica of the imperial crown.

When the disciples woke that first Easter, their feeling was not relief. Perhaps on Saturday night they had finally fallen to sleep exhausted, hoping to escape the horror of the previous two days. But when Sunday came, they woke knowing the events were not merely a bad dream. Jesus had died.

Is it any wonder the disciples did not believe the women's report that Christ had risen? They knew that Jesus had been crucified. They knew he had been taken down from the cross and put into a t omb. But now the women claimed he was alive!

When Jesus appeared to the disciples, their joy must have been incredible. All their hopes, shattered two days before, were restored in an instant. Easter announces new life, resurrection, and restored hope for the world.

 He lives! He is risen!

Well I did get the correct (#7) birthday card out to my grandson on Thursday. I don’t know if it got there on time, but it is in the mail.

Just when I thought that all was about ready for Easter, I found out that DS#3 and his family cannot make our family celebration so now I have their Easter baskets to get in the mail also. Of course it’s too late to get it to them on time, but on Monday, it too will be in the mail.

I really need to take out stock in the post office. They certainly help this long distance grand’ma’ out a lot.

I had a great afternoon with DS#5 and his wife. We visited the craft store which had everything from A-Z and made a few purchases. I think we were there at least 2 hours. Then we went to Sam’s Club which was also a lot of walking and then went to supper , which was a welcome relief after all the walking. Needless to say nothing else gotdone at my house the rest of the evening.

I’m off to my Dad’s as usual today

Two cowboy friends, Wally and Dallas, each bought a horse one summer. They enjoyed riding around and doing the things that cowboys do. When winter came, however, they did not want to pay to have their horses stabled for the winter. Instead, they decided to release them in a pasture and get them in the spring.

Wally noticed a problem however, and he asked Dallas, "How will we know which horse is which when we pick them up?" Dallas answered, "Well, I've been thinking about that, and I have the answer! After a day of wind and snow yesterday, I’m ready to stay indoors today. It was so cold that I hated to go out. I thought about going to the Holy Thursday Services at church last night, but that was as far as it went. Once in I just wanted to stay warm .

Tomatoes were grown by the Aztecs and Incas as early as 700 A.D. Seeds were taken back to Europe by explorers in the 1500's. Bill Goes to Church (Author Unknown)

There was a man named Bill who had never gone to church in his life. No matter how much he was encouraged or coaxed, he couldn't be persuaded to go to church, even on Easter or Christmas. He would say, "When it freezes in June, then I will go to church."

One year there was an unusually cold spring, and it remained cold all the way into the month of June! One day, in early June, the temperature dipped to freezing for several nights. Everyone remembered Bill's statement and wondered if this cold spell would finally get him to come to the church.

Well, yes! It certainly did! On that Sunday, Bill made his first appearance in the church building - while the organ played softly, and six men carried him in. Yes, he made it, but instead of sitting in a pew, he was lying in a casket.

Just as an infant requires food, fresh air, exercise, and the help of others in the physical realm, we need Bible study, praying, service and witnessing, and fellowship in a good church, from the spiritual realm.

A follower of Christ who neglects any of these four cannot expect to grow in his spiritual life. So, I hope you're not being like ol' Bill. Go to church and enjoy the view from the pew!

HAPPY THURSDAY

Yesterday I got all my Easter baskets mailed to the grand’babes’ out of town that I won’t see this year and Easter cards out to my family and friends. I also got our Dino Boy’s Birthday gift in the mail.

I was feeling pretty good at having this job accomplished when I suddenly realized that I’d put a birthday card in saying Happy Birthday to a SUPER Six Year Old. Guess I had a senior moment when I mailed that one as he is 7 this year.

Two steps forward and one step back seem to be the way I do things too often anymore. Today I’ll send off a corrected card.

The winds from the west have blown in some very cold weather and I guess it will be down in the 20’s at night for a few days. That is just way too cold.

Today is the last day of this work week for me. Tomorrow will be work at home day. Hopefully I won’t take too many steps backward.

Maybe a big fashion trend, but sailors discovered them first - because they were so practical. Bell bottom pants were easy to roll up and keep dry when swabbing the deck on the ships. They were also fast and easy to pull off if you fell overboard and needed to swim. Mid week and ‘Over the Hump’ we go. Only today and tomorrow of my work week left.

Friday is a day off from work at work anyway. It will be work at home day. Wow do we ever need it here.

Our weather man seems to be right on track. We had a record breaking 80 degree day yesterday. By tonight it will be down in the 30’s.

The snowbelt east of us could get 1-4 inches of that lovely white stuff. We may see a little, but not much.

AS we draw near to Good Friday, I'm inclined to ask, "How do we really understand what happened on this special day?" When we look at the cross on that first Good Friday, we see the darkness around the cross.

This makes me think of all my sins and all the sins of the world. When we look at the cross, we see Jesus hanging there. We can ask him to forgive us and know we have the promise of eternal life.

HAPPY TUESDAY

We made it through a gorgeous Monday and now we’ll have a go at Tuesday.

I was greeted by a beautiful full moon on the way to work yesterday and it was nice and sunny all day. Today will be even nicer with temps in the 70’s.

This is just a little teaser for us as we shouldn’t be this warm yet. By the end of the week snow will be here once again. We’ll just have to enjoy it while we can.

I have a few prayer requests today. Please join me in praying for an internet friend that is going through treatment for cancer and also for a friend of one of my buddy’s that is suffering from a nervous breakdown right now.

May our dear Lord bless them with healing of body and soul.

Betty Boop began her life as a dog. Designed by Fleischer studio and animator Grim Natwick, her first appearance was August 8, 1930, in "Dizzy Dishes." She was a dog, singing to another dog. HAPPY MONDAY

Our Sunday morning started of raining, but by the time I was coming out of church the sun was out and glorious! They say today will not be quite as warm. We’ll be in the low 60’s and it’ll be windy.

I was blessed by having DS#5, DD, and the Newlyweds all at church with me yesterday. It’s always nice to have some family there with me. Next Sunday is Easter so they’ll probably be there again. Our family celebration for Easter won’t be until the 15th so hopefully I’ll have them there 3 weeks in a row…we may even have a few more of DS#1 and DS#3 and their families make it in.

I have Good Friday off work so it’ll be only a 4 day work week this week. I’m looking forward to having the day off. I’ve got to get some house cleaning done and things ready for Easter.

Years ago, when the Betty Crocker Company first began selling their cake mixes, they offered a product which only needed water. All you had to do was add water to the mix, which came in the box, and you would get a perfect, delicious cake every time. It bombed. No one bought it and the company couldn’t understand why, so they commissioned a study which brought back a surprising answer.

It seemed that people weren’t buying the cake mix because it was too easy.
