HAPPY SUNDAY!

Well, Saturday was an experience. I thought I just needed an oil change and rotating the tires service this time, but as my luck would go I had that and a new ball joint and new front brakes. Since I was there for so long they gave me a loner car and I went to the craft store to spend some time…I got back about noon and started for home. However, the car was making a terrible noise so I went back to the dealership. It turns out that one of the brake pads was slipping. They fixed it and I got home about 2:00. They did give my car a wash and cleaned the carpet too ! I wonder did they spill something that the carpet needed cleaned???

OH WELL, It was quite dirty and did need it, but they never did that before. I’ll just count my blessings and forget the cost and celebrate R&R day!

I’m off to church as usual and then I think the house may need some attention, it certainly didn’t get it yesterday.

"I replied quickly, 'No, I don't want it.'

HAPPY SATURDAY!

When I turned on the news last night I heard the ‘S’ word in the forecast. This weekend will be chilly, but sunny. Next weekend is when the wet ‘S---’ might happen. Oh dear, it’s too early for that isn’t it???

This morning I’m sipping the good hot coffee and trying to make up my mind where to start first. Saturday’s always fly by and only half my list usually gets done if I’m lucky. I do have to take the ‘silver streak’ in for it’s 50,000 mile servicing at 9:00 so that will put a dent in the morning .

TODAY IS…RIPE PUMPKIN DAY

Pumpkins are 90 percent water. They were once recommended for removing freckles and curing snake bites. We don't know if that works, but we DO know they are good to eat!

PUMPKIN BREAD

3 cups sugar, granulated

3 1/2 cups flour, all-purpose

1/2 tsp salt

2 tsp baking soda

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp nutmeg

4 large eggs

1 cup vegetable oil

2 cups pumpkin (cooked)

2/3 cup water

1 1/2 cups walnuts, chopped

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and butter 3 loaf pans. Sift the dry ingredients together into a large bowl. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add the eggs, oil, pumpkin and water. Beat well with an electric mixer. Stir in the walnuts with a wooden spoon. Pour the batter into the loaf pans filling each half to two-thirds full. Bake for 60-90 minutes. The bread is done when a toothpick in the middle comes out clean. Cool about ten minutes, then loosen the edges of the bread with a knife and turn out to cool on a rack.

A man spoke with the Lord about heaven and hell. The Lord said to the man, "Come, I will show you hell." They entered a room where a group of people sat around a huge pot of stew. Everyone was famished, desperate and starving. Each held a spoon that reached the pot, but each spoon had a handle so much longer than their own arm that it could not be used to get the stew into their own mouths. The suffering was terrible.

"Come, now I will show you heaven," the Lord said after a while. They entered another room, identical to the first -- the pot of stew, the group of people, the same long-handled spoons. But there everyone was happy and well-nourished. "I don't understand," said the man. "Why are they happy here when they were miserable in the other room and everything was the same?"

Wouldn't it be great if God gave each of us as clear directions as he gave the Israelites in their escape from Egyptian slavery? There are times in our lives when we can't find direction in solving a difficult situation. What is God's will?

I have found a simple way in which I’ve found guidance and I’d like to share it.

I go to God in prayer. When we are quiet and pray, we don't push the panic button.

I make a list of choices and evaluate them. Unless I am certain that what I am about to do is according to what Jesus teaches, I don't do it.

I talk with a trusted family member or friend. I am careful that this person will keep our conversation confidential and will talk with me honestly, not just telling me what I want to hear.

I step out in faith, willing to take the risk of failure. The only one who never fails is the one who never does anything. And I know that God will strengthen and protect me in all I do.

TODAY IS…BAKE BISCUITS DAY Celebrate Biscuit Day by throwing together a real old-fashioned, downhome recipe like everybody's grandmother used to make (at least in the movies)!

Y'ALL COME BACK NOW BISCUITS

2 cups all purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon baking soda

1/3 cup soild vegetable shortning

3/4 cup milk or buttermilk

Combine the dry ingredients then cut in the shortning with the back of a fork until crumbly. Add the milk or buttermilk and stir until you have a soft dough. Throw out onto a piece of floured waxpaper and kneed 4 or 5 times (just kneed in more flour if the dough istoo sticky). Roll out dough about 1/2 inch thick. Dip a glass in flour and cut circles for biscuits. Place your biscuits 1 inch apart on a greased cookie sheet and bake at 400F for 15 to 18 minutes or until golden brown.

Rain and more rain – that’s what the weather has looked like so far this week. A cool front has now come thru and our summer-like temps are gone. There are lots of leaves on the ground from the tree out front. It looks like a golden blanket covering the yard. Soon it’ll be bare, but other trees on our street haven’t even started to turn color yet.

 I did hear from DS # 2 and he hopes to be coming home at Christmas time this year. It’s been about 3 years since he and his family have been home and it will be great to have them here.

And DS#3 sent a quick e-mail to let me know he’s out in California on a business trip this week. He says he’s enjoying the beautiful weather out there.

Over the Hump Day ! Yesterday morning I was greeted by a lightning display on my way to work, but shortly after lunch the sun came out and it did warm up. I came home from work and put my shorts on!

Today we’re supposed to have more rain and cooler weather.

Gas was down to $ 2.09 when I filled up yesterday. I hope it goes down under $2.00 and stays there for a while.

All is very quiet here…just a purring cat on my lap.

Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi

St. Francis of Assisi (1182?-1226) was the founder of the Franciscan Order. The son of a wealthy merchant named Pietro di Bernardone, he publicly denounced his father's wealth in 1206 and dedicated his life to prayer and serving the poor. BACK TO WORK !

After an exciting weekend, it’s hard to go back to work again. I think I still need another day to catch up on things at home. The week ahead looks to be a quiet one. Nothing on my calendar but work…

Our temps will be in the mid to upper 70’s to start off the week and then supposed to drop back in the 60’s. In the long range forecast I saw at least 3 days with 77 for a high. That is good news !

DD begins her classes this week, I’ll be saying a little prayer for her that she is able to keep up with classes and her job and homelife, it’s not easy going back to school.

The Most Important Body Part

My mother used to ask me what is the most important part of the body. Through the years I would take a guess at what I thought was the correct answer. When I was younger, I thought sound was very important to us as humans, so I said, "My ears, Mommy." She said, "No. Many people are deaf. But you keep thinking about it and I will ask you again soon."

Several years passed before she asked me again. Since making my first attempt, I had contemplated the correct answer. So this time I told her, "Mommy, sight is very important to everybody, so it must be our eyes." She looked at me and told me, "You are learning fast, but the answer is not correct because there are many people who are blind."

Stumped again, I continued my quest for knowledge and over the years, Mother asked me a couple more times and always her answer was, "No. But you are getting smarter every year, my child."

Then last year, my grandpa died. Everybody was hurt. Everybody was crying. Even my father cried. I remember that especially because it was only the second time I had seen him cry.

My Mom looked at me when it was our turn to say our final good-bye to Grandpa. She asked me, "Do you know the most important body part yet, dear?" I was shocked when she asked me this now. I always thought this was a game between her and me.

She saw the confusion on my face and told me, "This question is very important. It shows that you have really lived in your life. For every body part you gave me in the past, I have told you you were wrong and I have given you an example why. But today is the day you need to learn this important lesson."

She looked down at me as only a mother can. I saw her eyes well up with tears. She said, "My dear, the most important body part is your shoulder." I asked, "Is it because it holds up my head?" She replied, "No, it is because it can hold the head of a friend or a loved one when they cry.

Everybody needs a shoulder to cry on sometime in life, dear. I only hope that you have enough love and friends that you will always have a shoulder to cry on when you need it."

Then and there I knew the most important body part is not a selfish one. It is sympathetic to the pain of others.

People will forget what you said ... People will forget what you did ... But people will NEVER forget how you made them feel.

Even back in the time of Jesus ploughing was important. Using the image of the plough, Jesus said the person who is constantly looking back will get nowhere. It's much better to look at where we're going than to see where we've been.

Too much time is wasted and lost in looking back. This is especially true in those areas of our lives where we have regrets.

Nothing can change anything we have done in the past. But by concentrating on what's happening right now, gives us much more control in doing things better.

God wants us to focus on the job at hand and move forward in hope.
