The custom of blessing the home on this day probably originated from these words in the Gospel, "And entering into the house, they found the Child with Mary, His Mother, and falling down they adored Him."

Today is the day to bless our house, you can do so by inscribing the initials of the three Magi (Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar) above the doors with the chalk. The doors are inscribed with the following: 20 + C + M + B + 06 The initials are separated by crosses and the year above the door. The initials CMB also stand for the words "Christus Mansionem Benedicat" which means "May Christ bless this house".

This inscription above the entry of our house should be a reminder to us that we should be with and go to Christ in all our comings and goings

Brother André spent most of his days in a narrow lodge, with only a table, some chairs and a bench as furnishings. He was attentive to the needs of all, smiling, obliging. In the evening he would engage in the difficult work of maintaining the parlor and hallway floors. He was on his knees until late at night, washing, polishing, and waxing by the dim light of a candle.

The use of candles is one of the loveliest Christmas customs that we can keep on using throughout the year. Now, more than ever, Christmas is a festival of light in a dark world, a time to hold our candles high, and to teach our children all the little ceremonies which make life gracious and full of meaning.

No matter how long we live, nor how learned we become, we may travel the world over, and find nothing more beautiful than candlelight on the face of a child.

When I came home from work yesterday it was snowing, and there is supposed to be more today. The weekend begins after work today and I’ll be finishing up the undecorating.

Tomorrow afternoon I take the ‘Silver Streak’ for part of it’s 45,000 mile servicing. It needs a new air filter and fuel filter. Everytime they tell me something is required, I try to get it done so that my car keeps going. It’s got many miles to go before I can retire.

John Neumann was born in Bohemia on March 20, 1811. Since he had a great desire to dedicate himself to the American missions, he came to the United States as a cleric and was ordained in New York in 1836 by Bishop Dubois He labored in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland. In 1852, he was consecrated bishop of Philadelphia. There he worked hard for the establishment of parish schools and for the erection of many parishes for the numerous immigrants.

This gloomy weather just makes me sleepy. I’m in the hibernation mode again. It surely would be a blessing to see some sunshine ! I had a reprieve from a 10 hour day yesterday…Only worked 8 and ½ hours. Today should be a regular 8 hour day , but by the time I get home, it’s practically dark so it’ll be a good evening to stay in and keep warm.

I’ve got my new calendar partially filled in and it reminds me that there are lots of birthdays and anniversaries in my family coming up this year, so I’d better get busy. I haven’t made any plans for what I want to paint next and I need to get going.

There is never a dull moment at my house.

Take the Cake" means to win the prize, but where did this saying come from? It's an American expression that comes from the South where they had cakewalking contests. To "cakewalk" meant to strut your stuff, so the person who did the fanciest dance steps got to take home the cake

MISSISSIPPI MUD CAKE

1 cup butter

4 eggs

1 1/2 cup flour

3 1/2 cup coconut

2 cups sugar

1 tsp. vanilla

1/3 cup cocoa

1 cup nuts 7 oz jar marshmallow cream

Frosting

 1/2 cup melted butter

1/3 cup cocoa

1 tsp. vanilla

1 lb box powdered sugar

1/2 cup milk

1) Cream together the butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla. Add the rest of the ingredients except the marshmallow cream. Blend well. This batter will be stiff. 2) Pour into a greased and floured 9"x13" cake pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Remove from oven and immediately spread jar of marshmallow cream over the top. Cool thoroughly. 3) Mix all of the frosting ingredients together. Frost the cake and place in the fridge. NOTE: This cake must be stored in the refrigerator. Remove and cut right before serving.

She established her first Catholic school in Baltimore in 1808; in 1809, she established a religious community in Emmitsburg, Maryland. 1 cup sugar

4 cinnamon sticks

3 lemon slices

2 cups pineapple juice

2 cups orange juice

6 cups dry red wine

1/c cup lemon juice

1 cup dry sherry

 Boil the sugar, cinnamon sticks, and lemon slices in 1/2 cup of water for 5 minutes and strain. Discard the cinnamon sticks and lemon slices. Heat but do not boil the remaining ingredients. Combine with the syrup, and serve hot

I finally got the outside decorations down after work yesterday. I was waiting for the rain to stop so they could dry out a little before putting them away. It looks a little drab out there without the red and green of wreaths and flowers.

Work went by pretty fast for the 1st work day of the new year. Today is payroll day and I’ll be the only one in the office so it will be a long one.

School resumes today for a lot of my family , I know the kids are anxious to get back, but I’m not so sure about the adults!

The name of Jesus is a name of gladness, a name of hope and a name of love. To celebrate this feast we can begin by explaining to our children why we must show reverence for Our Lord by bowing our heads whenever we hear His name

 After the triumph of Christianity, the Chi-Rho monogram spread into all countries and found manifold use. It no longer served as a mere abbreviation of the sacred Name, but stood as a symbol for Christ the King. Artists often surrounded it with a laurel wreath or a circle. This signified Christ's dominion over the world,

The familiar abbreviation IHS is a symbol of the Name Jesus which has retained its popularity down through the centuries. It owes its spread to St. Bernardine of Siena, who had it placed on his banner, surrounded with twelve rays of the sun and surmounted by a cross. It soon became the most popular monogram for the holy Name of Jesus

Ichthys. The early Church loved another monogram for our Savior's name, the widely-used ICHTHYS. Christ's full title was (in Greek): Iesous Christos Theou Yos Soter, Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior. The initial letters of these five words form the Greek word ICHTHYS, which means fish. For this reason Christ is often pictured as a fish. Thus both the abbreviation and the picture became for the early Christians a secret symbol for the Redeemer

Back to work ! I hope you all had a nice long holiday weekend ! Here we are – a new week and a New Year. Now we’ll start making plans for all the things we want to accomplish this year. New Years day I listened to DD and DS#1 talk about some plans they have for camping ! Winter provides us for some nice quiet days to prepare for and make those plans.

It’ll be a quiet week here. I haven’t got anything extra going on after work this whole month, which is a good thing. It will be good to just come home and stay warm!

HAPPY MONDAY

Today is a paid Holiday from work so I’m off and at home to finished de-Christmas-ing my house. So far I’ve got the kitchen, living room and upstairs done. Today is the dining room and it has a lot in it. The tree and the Christmas town on the hutch shelves will take most of the day to put away. If I don’t get finished, I won’t complain…I still have all week to work at it.

Next Sunday we celebrate the feast of Epiphany and that’s the official end of the Season. If we count all the weeks of Advent and the weeks of Christmas, instead of just Christmas day, I’d say we had just about 2 months of a very fulfilling celebration.

A parish priest was being honored at his retirement dinner after 25 years in the parish. A leading local politician and member of the congregation was chosen to make the presentation and give a little speech at the dinner.

He was delayed so the priest decided to say his own few words while they waited. "I got my first impression of the parish from the first confession I heard here. I thought I had been assigned to a terrible place.

The very first person who entered my confessional told me he had stolen a television set and, when stopped by the police, had almost murdered the officer. He had stolen money from his parents, embezzled from his place of business, had an affair with his boss's wife, taken illegal drugs, and gave VD to his sister.

I was appalled. But as the days went on I knew that my people were not all like that and I had, indeed, come to a fine parish full of good and loving people.

.. Just as the priest finished his talk, the politician arrived full of apologies at being late. He immediately began to make the presentation and give his talk.

"I'll never forget the first day our parish priest arrived," said the politician. "In fact, I had the honor of being the first one to go to him in confession."
