TODAY IS…MOTHER GOOSE DAY

Who was Mother Goose? The answer is many different writers. The term "Mother Goose" has been traced back to 1650 when a French book carried the line, "Like a Mother Goose story". It was first used in the title of a nusery rhyme collection about 1765 when "Mother Goose's Melody" was published. The name caught on, and nusery rhymes have been attributed to Mother Goose ever since.

May birthstone: the emerald.

May's flower: lily of the valley or hawthorn

TODAY’S SMILE

Irritation, Aggravation and Frustration…as explained by a father.

A boy asks his father to explain the differences among irritation, aggravation, and frustration.

Dad picks up the phone and dials a number at random. When the phone is answered he asks, "Can I speak to Alf, please?" "No! There's no one called Alf here." The person hangs up. "That's irritation," says Dad.

He picks up the phone again, dials the same number and asks for Alf a second time. "No -- there's no one here called Alf. Go away. If you call again I shall telephone the police."

End of conversation. "That's aggravation."

"Then what's 'frustration'?" asks his son.

The father picks up the phone and dials a third time: "Hello, this is Alf. Have I received any phone calls?"

TODAY’S WORD

2. Generosity of spirit or attitude.

TODAY’S REFLECTION

Jesus said to him, If you are able!—All things can be done for the one who believes.

Mark 9:23

I have become more and more convinced the magic that we behold in the lives of those who believe is not magic at all. Instead it is the power that is felt through the movement of the Spirit of God.

Do you believe in God? …Then let us …stand up for what we believe. For when we do, the power of God is able to flow into the world and our lives in some ‘magical'ways.

O most holy Creator, You have formed each one of us, and yet there are some days, and many ways, when we act as if You do not exist. God, strengthen us so that we might be able to stand up and declare the truth of Your existence, and our willingness to follow You where You would have us go. Amen.

TODAY IS…Yo Yo DAY

Yo-yos may be the world's oldest toys. 3,000 year old stone yo-yos have been found in Greece, and ivory yo-yos were made in China about 1000 B.C. Popular with the French royal court and in Victorian England, they came to the U.S. with the emigrants. Three presidents (Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon) publicly displayed their skill - and in 1992, a yo-yo went into space with astronaut Jeffry Hoffman on the space shuttle Atlantis.

The story is told of two polite people who were having dinner together. On the table there was a dish with one big piece of fish and one small piece of fish.

They politely said to each other: "You may choose first." "No, you may choose first." This went on for a while. Then the first person said, "OK, I'll take first." And he took the BIG piece of fish.

The second person said, "Why did you take the big piece? That's not polite!" The first person said, "Which piece would *you* have taken?" The second person replied, "Why, I would have taken the SMALL piece, of course."

The first person said, "Well, that's what you have now!"

Luke 15:11-13

That last sentence represents every parent's worst nightmare. God placed this precious little child in your care while you were still learning to take care of yourself. You did your best to teach him what is right and wrong. You gave him the gift of love. You nurtured him as best you could. You sheltered him from danger as much as possible. You provided him with every reasonable advantage that you could afford.

You did everything, at least everything you knew to do, to prepare your child to be independent, strong, a person of character, and to live out the plan God had in mind from the miraculous conception of your son.

Is there a more helpless moment for a parent? Is there any greater pain that what a parent feels for their children when they hurt ... or worse than hurt?

Father, thank You for trusting us to love and protect these gifts from you for as long as we are granted that opportunity. When they reach the age that they get together all they have and set off for a distant country, help us to have the courage to let them go. And I thank You for the assurance that You will always go with them and will always be there for them.

TODAY IS…QUILT LOVERS DAY

Quilting is sewing two layers of fabric together with filling in the middle. It originated in ancient times when people wore quilted garments for warmth and protection. Written records of bed quilts date back to the 12th century, and a quilt survives from the 1400's in England. The first quilts in the U.S. were appliquéd by early colonists, but it was the patchwork quilt that became the most popular form of quilting in America.

Today is Zipper Day. Godeon Sundbach of Hoboken, New Jersey, patented the zipper fastener on this day in 1913.

The man who became one of the twentieth century’s finest composers, Edward Kennedy Ellington, was born on this day in 1899 in Washington, D.C. The Duke would create big band pieces, film scores, operas, ballets, Broadway shows, even gospel music. He would work with each section of his orchestra as an entity unto its own and then bring them together to create the unique sounds such as, Mood Indigo. Over 1,000 musical pieces are credited to the great Duke Ellington.

1879 - Electric arc lights were used for the first time -- in Cleveland, OH.

1953 - Coke Time with Eddie Fisher began its TV and radio run on NBC-TV and Mutual radio. Fisher, a popular performer, was seen and heard on more TV and radio stations in 1954 than any other entertainer

1974: Phil Donahue’s TV talk show moved from Dayton, Ohio, to Chicago, where it would win nine Emmy Awards in 11 years before moving to New York City in 1985.

TODAY’S SMILE

According to legend, a desert wanderer discovered a spring of cool, crystal-clear water. It tasted so good, he filled a leather container with the precious liquid so he could bring it to the king.

After a long journey, he presented his gift to the king, who drank it with great pleasure and lavishly thanked the wanderer, who went away with a happy heart.

The king’s son tasted the water and spit it out. It had picked up the smell of the old leather canteen and had become foul. The boy asked his father why he pretended to like the awful tasting water.

The king said, "Son, that man gave me a gift from his heart. It wasn’t the water I enjoyed; it was the sweet taste of his generosity.

When someone gives you something with genuine love, the thing given is simply the container.

Scrimshaw is a distinctly North American folk art, but no one knows just where it started or how it got its name. Native peoples of Alaska and Canada have carved ivory for centuries, but when "scrimshaw" is used in modern English, it is most often associated with 18th- and 19th-century whalers of the ilk Herman Melville described as "examining ... divers specimens of skrimshander" in Moby Dick (1851).

TODAY’S REFLECTION

Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the Lord Almighty.

Zechariah 4:6b

Do you find yourself feeling overwhelmed by the amount of things you need to do in a day? How many times we say, "I just wish there were more hours in the day, so that I can get everything done!"

I remembered an old song -- "One day at a time, sweet Jesus, that's all I'm asking from you. Give me the strength to do every day what I have to do."

What a beautiful prayer! Prayerful living gives us that link with our all-powerful Lord. Remember that it is not by might or power, but by the Spirit that we accomplish good works.

TODAY IS…ZUCCHINI BREAD DAY

Zucchini is also called courgettes, marrows and summer squash. According to the National Gardening Association, it is not one of the top ten vegetables grown in home gardens (the tomato tops that list). This might be because when you plant zucchini, you end up with enough of the vegetable to feed a small army.

ZUCCHINI BREAD RECIPE

3 eggs

3/4 cup applesauce

1/4 cup oil

2 cups sugar 1

Tablespoon vanilla

1 cup whole-wheat flour

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1 Tablespoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon cloves

1/2 teaspoon allspice

1/4 teaspoon ginger

2 cups zucchini, grated

1 cup nuts, chopped

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour 2 large loaf pans 2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the eggs, oil and applesauce. Add sugar and vanilla. 3. Add all of the dry ingredients and mix well. Stir in zucchini and nuts last. 4. Bake about 50 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool before removing from pan. Freezes well.

TODAY’S TRIVIA

Today is National Blueberry Pie Day.

Small cars were offered forsale in the U.S. for the first time on this day in 1939. Actually, these little cars would make today’s compact cars look like land yachts!

Imagine a car that sold for $325, was 10-feet long, had an 80-inch wheelbase and a four-gallon gas tank. We just described the Crosley which became fairly popular back in 1939 -- but wouldn’t survive. It was replaced less than 15 years later by the popular German Volkswagen Beetle. Remember? It was more affectionately called the Bug.

Although he asked her kindly to cease pulling his hair several times, she kept on. Getting fairly annoyed, he began to severely scold her. "But, Daddy," she replied, "I'm just trying to get my gum back."

HAPPY FINALLY FRIDAY

After work this evening I get to make my ‘deviled eggs’ again. This Sunday there’s going to be a party at DS#3’s house. Their youngest son is being baptized and their daughter is having a birthday. I asked what I could bring and that was the answer I got.

Tomorrow is my day at Dad’s and before I know it the weekend will be over. I know it hasn’t even started yet, but it is going to be a busy one.

DS#5 has a conference to go to out of town, so please say a little prayer for safe travels for him and for all who may be traveling this weekend for business or pleasure. (He'll be back home on Saturday and then going to the party on Sunday)

TODAY IS…ARBOR DAY

The first Arbor Day was April 10, 1872 in Nebraska. That state was a barren plain, so the pioneers missed the trees - they also needed them for windbreaks, firewood and shade. Prizes were offered to the towns that planted the most trees on that one day. (It was estimated that more than one million trees were planted.) Over the years, This Date spread to other states and other countries. It is generally celebrated the last Friday of April, but the date is flexible to allow for local climates.

A reporter was sent to find out what creates true happiness. Her first visit was to a wealthy man. "Why are you happy?" the reporter asked. "Why, I've got all this," he said showing her his vast pristine estate.

Her secondvisit was to a middle-aged couple living in the suburbs. "Why are you happy?" she asked the couple. "Because we have all this," both responded, explaining that they felt lucky to have each other, and were blessed with a daughter to care for.

Her last visit was to a financially poor woman in a run-down deteriorating neighborhood. "Why are you happy?" the reporter asked. The woman smiled and said, "because I have many things to be thankful for. I am alive, I have a roof over my head, and I am blessed by being able to bring up four children and watch them grow up."

She pointed to a small dirt park across the street with children playing and laughing and added, "and I have all this to enjoy."

Happiness is everywhere. Sometimes you just have to look around to see it.

Happy = Having A Positive Perspective (about) Yourself

Happiness is where we look to find it. Happiness is finding it where we look.

Happiness is in the perspective of the beholder...

Finding peace and happiness doesn't depend on getting rid of all conflicts and problems in life. . .rather, finding peace and happiness depends on learning how to deal with those problems and conflicts and knowing how to rise above them to enjoy the good things.

When the use of nail paint spread, it continued to signify social order - with red at the top. Queen Nefertiti painted her fingernails and toenails ruby red. Cleopatra used a deep rust red. But, it wasn't just women who were getting manicures. Egyptian, Babylonian and Roman military leaders had their fingernails painted before they went into battle.

TODAY’S SMILE

An elderly woman called the hospital to inquire about the health of a patient. "Hospital Operator? Hello, Darling. I'd like to talk with the person who gives the information about the patients. But I don't want to know if the patient is better or doing like expected, or worse. I want all the information from top to bottom, fromA to Z."

The voice on the other line said, "Would you hold the line please, that's a very unusual request." Then a very authoritative voice came on and said, "Are you the lady who is calling about one of the patients?"

She said, "Yes, darling! I'd like to know the information about Sarah Finkel in Room 302." He said, "Finkel. Finkel. Let me see. Farber, Feinberg... Finkel. Oh yes, Mrs. Finkel is doing very well. In fact, she's had two full meals, and her doctor says if she continues improving as she is he is going to send her home today at twelve o'clock."

The woman said, "Thank God! That's wonderful! She's going home at twelve o'clock! I'm so happy to hear that. That's wonderful news."

"From your enthusiasm," the man on the other end said, "I take it you must be a close family member." She said, "What close family? I'm Sarah Finkel! My doctor doesn't tell me anything."

As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more. But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children; to such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them.

How briefly, but how firmly St. Paul tells me to "mind my own business." How right he is!

I am in no position to judge others; only God knows the mind and heart of others. This prerogative belongs to God even though I try so often to assume it myself!

Surely, if I attend to my own affairs I will be at peace. Paul tells me to make this a point of honor.

TODAY'S THOUGHT

We may not be able to give much but we can always give the joy that springs in a heart that is in love with God.

Mother Teresa

TODAY’S ACTION

Make someone's day. Tell them how much you appreciate them.

TODAY’S QUOTE

HAPPY WEDNESDAY

OVER THE HUMP DAY!

We will have to make our own Sunshine here for the next 3 days ! April Showers are predicted. The weekend forecast looks to be sunny though and that is a good thing.

It seems to me that the weatherman has been more accurate lately or is that my imagination???

I had a nice surprise visit from my ‘old camping buddy’ yesterday evening. It is always good to see her and it’d been quite awhile since our last visit. She was on her way to someplace else and had an extra half hour, so she just stopped in.

Other than that my week has been a quiet one. I go to work each day, come home and try to do at least one thing on the home front, then the day is over it seems.

Have a great day all ! Another wonderful one on the Way !

Please pray for God's protection of our troops and HIS wisdom for their commanders.

Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. I ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.

TODAY IS…TUNA SANDWICH DAY

Is tuna fish about to replace peanut butter and jelly as everyone's favorite sandwich filling? It looks like the answer is "yes"! Canned tuna has been around for 100 years and is a staple in 85% of American kitchens. A rich source of protein, it's also low-fat and has lots of other nutrients. But, for sandwich lovers, versitility is the key. Starting with a base of tuna and mayonnaise, you can go on a sandwich adventure. Almost anything can be blended with tuna. Experiment!

 TODAY’S SMILE

Even though I clutch my blanket and growl when the alarm rings, thank you, Lord, that I can hear. There are many who are deaf.

Even though I keep my eyes closed against the morning light as long as possible, thank you, Lord, that I can see. Many are blind.

Even though I huddle in my bed and put off rising, thank you, Lord, that I have the strength to rise. There are many who are bedridden.

Even though the first hour of my day is hectic, when socks are lost, toast is burned and tempers are short and my children are so loud, thank you, Lord, for my family. There are many who are lonely.

Even though our breakfast table never looks like the pictures in magazines and the menu is at times unbalanced, thank you, Lord, for the food we have. There are many who are hungry.

Even though the routine of my job often is monotonous, thank you, Lord, for the opportunity to work. There are many who have no job.

Even though I grumble and bemoan my fate from day to day and wish my circumstances were not so modest, thank you, Lord, for life!

TODAY IS…CIRCUS CIRCUS DAY

Circuses are the most enduring form of entertainment in the world. In the Roman days, they featured wild animal duels and chariot races. During the middle ages, a circus meant traveling troups that stopped in the marketplace with trained animals and acrobats. The kind of circus we know today began as a way to show fancy riding. Clowns were added to fill the time between riders, and the modern circus was on it's way.

2. You are amazing! I look at you with wonder! Not just at what you can do, but who you are. There is no one like you. No one!

TODAY’S REFLECTION

Folly delights a man who lacks judgment, but a man of understanding keeps a straight course.

Proverbs 15:21

We sometimes make mistakes because we foolishly rush into things without praying and thinking it through. The consequences are sometimes unpleasant.

You see, it isn't always how we Christians handle life's catastrophes. It is how we use our judgment and understanding in dealing with life's everyday problems. If we can maintain an even temper in the face of little annoying incidents, we are showing the world the peace and joy that prayerful living brings.

We never know who is watching us. Our children follow our actions. I have caught myself many times doing and saying things just like my mother or dad. We can reach more people with our lives than with a sermon.

HAPPY MONDAY

It is back to work today! We are supposed to start off the day sunny but could have some thunder showers by evening. We got the fertilizer on Sunday afternoon so it will be good if it does rain.

We also mowed the grass for the first time this year. Now you know it will be every week for a while . No stopping…until maybe next October.

Sundays always go by fast. Nothing much but the yard work got done around my house. I’ll have to try to do a little each day this week. Next Sunday our little Pumpkin is baptized and they are having a party to celebrate that and our Angels birthday too ! I’m going to try and go after church, so that leaves no weekend time to do anything at home.

Our campers had a beautiful weekend to open up their summer homes. I did hear from them and I guess it was just gorgeous there. When Memorial Day weekend rolls around I’ll be able to go and visit them.

Have a great day all ! Another wonderful one on the Way !

Today is St. George's Day, honoring the patron saint of England. It's a holiday in Newfoundland. As the story goes, this dragon had an insatiable appetite and it was only through his deep faith that George was able to accomplish this deed.

He was so revered by the Crusaders, that George was named Patron Saint of England in 1350 A.D. For many years, English soldiers wore the red cross of St. George on a white background as a badge; and it remains a part of the British Union flag.

TODAY’S SMILE

Man is fond of counting his troubles, but he does not count his joys. If he counted them up as he ought to, he would see that every lot has enough happiness provided for it. ~Fyodor Dostoevsky

There was once a very active boy who fell and broke his leg. He could run again in the spring, the doctors said, but only if he stayed in bed for an entire month and kept his leg still. At first the boy fought the rule, but he found that the more he thought about things he couldn't do, the more tired and angry he felt.

His parents put in a phone by his bed and friends called every day. He'd never much liked talking on the phone, but he felt better when they called. He wrote letters and got replies, and was surprised at what fun it was. Usually, he didn't have time to write letters.

He learned to play chess and began to enjoy reading. His days were slower and quieter than he'd been used to, but he learned a month really isn't a very long time. When spring came, he was running again, a little more joyfully than before.

When we can learn to accept our troubles, we find, like the boy, that they are just packages in which new growth and discoveries are wrapped.

John 8:31-32

Believing in yourself, and those who are around you, is something that we have a hard time doing. We are consistently being told that we are not good enough, or at the very least, that there is someone better than we are.

Here's the thing though (and if this isn't the greatest equalizer out there, then I don't know what is), God believes in You! Say it! And don't just say it, believe it!

God believes in me.

God, help us to recognize Your belief in us, and then make that understanding our own. Lord, let it be so! Amen.

HAPPY SUNDAY

As I checked the weather on Saturday morning I noticed that all my weather areas had sunshine. I’ve got it set up so I can see the weather for all of my ‘babes’. The temps ranged from a low for DS#3 of 33 in the am and a high for DS#4 of 81 in the pm I was just thinking what a grand day for them all !

Usually sunshine means there will be no foul weather, let’s just hope none of them ate chicken so there were no fowl moods either ! He he !

A friend of mine always uses that simile so I just though I’d use it once too ! Ha Ha!

I’m off to church and then to take communion to my DDH’s elderly aunt once more.

Have a great day all ! Another wonderful one on the Way !

Please pray for God's protection of our troops and HIS wisdom for their commanders.

TODAY IS…JUST SALUTE DAY

Saluting comes from a tradition that belonged to the medieval knights. Shaking hands was the way to show you carried no hidden weapons. Pulling up the visor of your armor to show your face was just as important - it showed you were a a friend. This became the widespread custom of nodding or tipping your hat as a greeting. In the ranks of the military, it became the formal salute.

TODAY’S TRIVIA

Earth Day - First observed in 1970

In God We Trust Anniversary - This motto was first used on coins in 1864.

Sun Day - Promotes the use of solar energy

Today is April Showers Day.

On this day in 1878, the first Egg Roll was held on the grounds of the White House in Washington, DC. The first president on hand for the first Egg Roll was Rutherford B. Hayes. He and his wife Lucy made it an official event. It has been held every year since, except during the war years of WWI and WWII through 1953. The president who brought the tradition back in 1953 was Dwight D. Eisenhower.

TODAY’S SMILE

A king went to his garden and discovered that his trees, bushes and flowers were dying. The Oak told him that was dying because it could not be as tall as the Pine.

Turning to the Pine, found it fallen because could not give grapes as the Vine. And the Vine was dying because could not blossom as the Rose. The Rose cried because could not be as tall and solid as the Oak.

Then he found a plant, a Strawberry, blossoming and fresher than ever. The king asked it," How do you grow so healthy in the mist of this withered and somber garden?" "I do not know. Perhaps it be because always I supposed that when you planted me, you wanted strawberries.

If you would have wanted an Oak or a Rose, you had planted them. At that time I said to myself: "I will try to be Strawberry the best way I can."

Now it is your turn.

You are here to contribute with our fragrance. Simply look at yourself. There are no possibilities you be another person. You could enjoy it and blossom with your own love for you, or you could wither in your own sentence...

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind.

Luke 10:27

I'm sure that most of us are familiar with today's scripture, but have you ever considered seriously that it commands us to love the Lord with all our minds?

Everything that we do or say comes from what is in our mind. We renew our minds by learning from our Savior Jesus Christ. When we study his life and his teachings, we are renewing our minds and growing closer to him. Then our thoughts become in sync with God's will for us.
