HAPPY F R I DAY !

Happy vacation day to me !

A new month is here – September !

I’ll be putting the picture of my September purse in my morning journal page if you want to take a look. My new washer is being delivered sometime this today and I’m sorta excited about it. I know that’s not usually something to get excited about, but I do need to do my laundry.

Have a great day all ! Another wonderful one on the Way !

Please pray for God's protection of our troops and HIS wisdom for their commanders.

Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. I ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.

GOD BLESS YOU !

TODAY IS…EMMA NUTT DAY !

Yes, Emma M. Nutt was areal person! She's famous for being the first female telephone operator. Initially, the phone company hired young boys - with disasterous results. They fought with each other, were unruly and rude to customers. On September 1st, 1878, Emma was hired (along with her sister). Her career saying "operator" lasted 33 years. I wonder how many wrong numbers that included! Ring-a-ding-ding!

TODAY’S TRIVIA

In Latin septem means "the seventh." Originally, back when the new year started in March, September was the 7th month. *

September's birthstone: sapphire. Flower: aster or morning glory.

September is the busiest month for births in the U.S., more than 11,000 on an average day.

September is National Chicken Month, Baby Safety Month, Children's Good Manners Month, Childhood Cancer Month, National Coupon Month, Hug a Texas Chef Month, National Honey Month, and National Biscuit Month.

Today is National Cherry Popover Day.

1859: The Pullman sleeping car was placed into service. The car was built by company namesake George Pullman and he was assisted by Ben Field.

1878: 1st woman telephone operator starts work (Emma Nutt in Boston).

1945: RKO sold rights to the movie script "The Greatest Gift" to Frank Capra for $10-thousand. Capra turned it into a film called "It’s A Wonderful Life."

1995: A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.

TODAY’S SMILE

Start your day off with a great big smile because every day should be a GREAT DAY.

A POEM FOR MOMS AND DADS

Now I lay me down to sleep,

I pray my sanity to keep.

For if some peace I do not find,

I'm pretty sure I'll lose my mind.

I pray I find a little quiet

Far from the daily family riot

May I lie back -- not have to think about

what they're stuffing down the sink,

or who they're with, or where they're at

and what they're doing to the cat.

I pray for time all to myself

(did something just fall off a shelf?)

To cuddle in my nice, soft bed

(Oh no, another goldfish -- dead!)

Some silent moments for goodness sake

(Did I just hear a window break?)

And that I need not cook or clean--

(well sure, I've got the right to dream)

Yes now I lay me down to sleep,

I pray my wits about me keep,

But as I look around I know--

I must have lost them long ago!

TODAY’S WORD

paradigm \PAIR-uh-dyme\ noun

1 : example, pattern; especially : an outstanding example or archetype

2 : a philosophical and theoretical framework of a scientific school or discipline

In operation for over 50 years, the Bergs' restaurant has long been a paradigm of efficient small-business management.

TODAY’S REFLECTION

Instead of their shame my people will receive a double portion, and instead of disgrace they will rejoice in their inheritance

Isaiah 61:7

If you trust God, you will believe his promise in today's scripture. Out of your shame or your sorrow he will bring you double blessings. Life can be unfair. We may lose a loved one prematurely because of an accident. A spouse may be unfaithful. Others may be promoted around us on the job.

It is important that we trust God's promise that he will bring us a "double portion." God wants to do new things in your life. Don't look back! Let it go!

HAPPY THURSDAY !

This is the last day of my work week. I got all of my Wednesday work completed and half of my Thursday work done yesterday. Today I’ll get the rest done and then I enjoy a nice long 4 day weekend.

Have a great day all ! Another wonderful one on the Way !

Please pray for God's protection of our troops and HIS wisdom for their commanders.

TODAY IS…EAT OUTSIDE DAY

The calendar tells us the first day of fall is still weeks away. But, many people consider the last day of August the end of summer. It's a good time to plan one more cookout, picnic or just to eat out on the back step. Maybe a time to think about all the holidays that will be here before we know it!

PICNIC TV DINNER

6 hamburger patties

6 potatoes, sliced

6 celery sticks, chopped

6 carrots, chopped

your choice of seasonings (optional)

1. On a large sheet of tin foil, place one hamburger pattie. Pile 1/6 of each of the vegetables on top of the meat. Fold up the tin foil and seal it around all the edges. Repeat for the rest of the hamburger patties. 2. Place the 6 foil packets on your grill and cook until the meat is well done. OR place the foil packets on a cookie sheet and bake at 425 degrees F for 1 hour.

This is a great dish to eat outside. Each person gets their own foil packet to open and eat. Any seasoning you like should go on the meat before you pile on the vegetables. I sprinkle on a little dried onion soup - that's my favorite.

TODAY’S SMILE

Start your day off with a great big smile because every day should be a GREAT DAY.

The other day I was in the local auto parts store. A lady came in and asked for a seven ten cap. We all looked at each other and asked, "What's a seven ten cap?" She said, "You know, it's right on the engine.

Mine got lost somehow and I need a new one."

"What kind of a car is it?" they asked. Now I'm thinking maybe an old Datsun Seven Ten, but she says that it is a Buick. "Okay, lady, how big is it?" She made a circle with her hands about 3 1/2 inches in diameter. "What does it do?" we asked.

She said, " I don't know, but it's always been there."

One of us gave her a note pad and asked her if she could draw a picture of it. So she made a circle about 3 1/2 inches in diameter and in the center she wrote 710.

The guys behind the counter were watching as she wrote it.... And they just fell down behind the counter laughing hysterically. Then one guy said, "I think you want an oil cap."

She said, "Seven Ten cap, oil cap, I don't care what you call it. I just need one and I don't see what is so funny about it.

 (Yes, she was a blonde!)

**Now get a paper, draw a circle, write 710 inside of it. Now rotate the circle 180 degrees and check the results.

(That sounds like something I would do and no-I’m not a blond)

TODAY’S REFLECTION

 My cup overflows with blessings.

 Psalm 23:5

The overflowing cup was a powerful symbol in the days of David. Hosts in the ancient East used it to send a message to the guest. As long as the cup was kept full, the guest knew he was welcome. But when the cup sat empty, the host was hinting that the hour was late.

On those occasions, however, when the host really enjoyed the company of the person, he filled the cup to overflowing. He didn’t stop when the wine reached the rim; he kept pouring until the liquid ran over the edge of the cup and down on the table.

You have a place at God’s table. And he is filling your cup to overflowing

TODAY IS …GET A SLINKY DAY

Richard James was a naval engineer. He originally developed the Slinkyas an anti-vibration device for ship instruments in the early 1940s. But, when the Slinky didn't work for the Navy, his wife decided it should be turned into a toy. They picked out the name and decided to demonstrate it at Gimbels Department Store in Philadelphia in 1946. An hour and a half after the first demonstration, they had sold 400 Slinkys - and it went on to become one of the most successful toys of all time!

Andy wants a job as a signalman on the railways. He is told to meet the inspector at the signal box.

The inspector puts this question to him: "What would you do if you realised that 2 trains were heading for each other on the same track?" Andy says, "I would switch the points for one of the trains."

"What if the lever broke?" asked the inspector. "Then I'd dash down out of the signal box," said Andy, "and I'd use the manual lever over there."

"What if that had been struck by lightning?" "Then," Andy continues, "I'd run back into the signal box and phone the next signal box."

"What if the phone was engaged?" "Well in that case," persevered Andy, "I'd rush down out of the box and use the public emergency phone at the level crossing up there."

"What if that was vandalised?" "Oh well then I'd run into the village and get my uncle Silas."

This puzzles the inspector, so he asks, "Why would you do that?"

Came the answer, "Because he's never seen a train crash."

TODAY IS…TALL BUILDING DAY

Throughout history, people built "up" - the ancient pyramids, the cathedrals of Europe and countless towers. Today, we build skyscrapers because they put lots of real estate in a small ground area. So, what's the tallest builing? The Petronas Towers in Malaysia win at 1,483 ft each. But, the top part of this structure is only decorative. Many people vote for the Sears Tower in Chicago because it has the highest occupied floor (1,431 ft) and the highest traditional roof (1,454 ft.).

What are we to think when we repeatedly ask God for something good—something that could easily glorify Him—but the answer doesn’t come? Is He listening or not? Missed Opportunities

The story is told of a young man who wished to marry the farmer's beautiful daughter. He went to the farmer to ask his permission. The farmer looked him over and responded, "Son, go stand out in that field and I'm going to release three bulls, one at a time. If you can catch the tail of any one of the three bulls you can marry my daughter."

The young man stood in the pasture awaiting the first bull. The barn door opened and out ran the biggest, meanest-looking bull he had ever seen. He decided that one of the next bulls had to be a better choice than this one, so he ran over to the side and let the bull pass through the pasture out the back gate.

The barn door opened again. Unbelievable. He had never seen anything so big and fierce in his life. It stood pawing the ground, grunting, slinging slobber as it eyed him. Whatever the next bull was like, it had to be a better choice than this one. He ran to the fence and let the bull pass through the pasture out the back gate.

The door opened a third time. A smile came across his face. This was the weakest, scrawniest little bull he had ever seen. This one was his bull. As the bull came running by, he positioned himself just right and jumped at just the exact moment. He grabbed... but the bull had no tail!

Continue praying, keeping alert, and always thanking God. Also pray for us that God will give us an opportunity to tell people His message." (Col. 4:2-3a)

TODAY’S REFLECTION

Anyone who is having trouble should pray.

James 5:13

Before you go anywhere else with your disappointments, go to God.

Maybe you don’t want to trouble God with your hurts. After all, he’s got famines and pestilence and wars; he won’t care about my little struggles, you think. Why don’t you let him decide that?

He cared enough about a wedding to provide the wine. He cared enough about Peter’s tax payment to give him a coin. He cared enough about the woman at the well to give her answers. “He cares about you” (I Peter 5:7).

HAPPY SATURDAY !

Just an ordinary day ! It got very hot and humid here yesterday and it’s supposed to be that way all weekend. We’ll hope it cools down come Monday when everyone goes back to school. Our classrooms aren’t air conditioned.

I plan on doing some ‘house blessing’ this morning . I can’t do the laundry yet as my washer died and am hopefully going to be able to get a new one by next weekend. Thankfully I won’t run out of clean sheets, towels or clothing (I do have too much stuff) but when I get the new washer, it will get a work out for sure.

I did get out for a walk again last evening and they have completed the monument in the park , so next walk I take I’ll have to take the camera again so you can see what it looks like finished. They are supposed to have a dedication for it Labor Day weekend.

Take good care All – keep cool !

TODAY IS…HORSESHOE DAY

Horseshoes were invented by the Greeks and discovered by Western culture in the 4th century. Beyond their intended use, they became a universal symbol for good luck - a superstition that lasted well into the 1800s. The most popular practice was nailing a horseshoe over the front door of a house - pointed upward so the luck wouldn't fall out. Even Lord Nelson nailed a horseshoe on the mast of his command ship before the Battle of Trafalgar

Start your day off with a great big smile because every day should be a GREAT DAY.

There was an old Italian man who had moved to the US in his youth. He worked hard his whole life at a fruit stand, frugally saving every penny he could, investing money in stocks. When the time came to retire, he had made enough to have his dream house built.

He hired an architect and eagerly started planning out his mansion. After working out most of the rest, the architect asked if there was anything special the Italian man wanted to include.

"Yes," he said, "I-a allus-a want one of-a those-a hollow estatues at-a the bottom of-a the stairs!"

"No problem!" said the architect, "I'll pick a really beautiful one!"

Comes the day for the grand opening of the house, and the Italian man's first look at it. He goes inside and excitedly runs around the house, looking at everything and exclaiming "Yes, yes! That's-a just how I want it!".

He gets to the foot of the stairs and sees a stunning porcelain Venus De Milo on a pedestal. He turns to the architect and says "'ey! What's-a that?"

The architect, somewhat baffled, says, "That's the hollow statue you asked for."

"No, no, no!" the Italian man replies, shouting in the architect's face and waving his hands, "I no-a ask for that, I wanna hollow estatue!"

"Well, I'm afraid I don't understand. Could you explain to me what you want?" the architect asked.

In the patient voice used on small children, the Italian man carefully said, "I want-a that-a thing. It sit-a on the table. It-a say 'Ring ring'. You pick-a it up and say-a . . .

"hallo, estat you?"

TODAY’S REFLECTION

You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit -- fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you what ever you ask in my name.

John 15:16

Jesus meant what Paul describes: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control" (Galatians 5:22).

This does not mean that God does not want us to have wealth, power and prestige, for Jesus said, "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full" (John 10:10).

But if our lives are filled with the fruit of the Spirit, we'll not lie, cheat, steal or do anything to harm the lives of others in order to succeed. We'll treat others as we would like to be treated, so that we are an encouragement rather than a threat.

When you have the fruit of the Spirit, you will be guided by the Lord in the things that you desire and they will be yours.

This is the story of two elderly people living in a Florida mobile home park. He was a widower and she a widow. They had known one another for a number of years.

Now, one evening there was a community supper in the big activity center. These two were at the same table, across from one another. As themeal went on, he made a few admiring glances at her and finally gathered up his courage to ask her, "Will you marry me?" After about six seconds of 'careful consideration,' she answered. "Yes. Yes, I will."

The meal ended and with a few more pleasant exchanges, they went to their respective places. Next morning, he was troubled. Did she say 'yes' or did she say 'no'? He couldn't remember. Try as he would, he just could not recall. Not even a faint memory.

With trepidation, he went to the telephone and called her. First, he explained to her that he didn't remember as well as he used to. Then he reviewed the lovely evening past. As he gained a little more courage, he then inquired of her, "When I asked if you would marry me, did you say 'Yes' or did you say 'No'?"

He was delighted to hear her say, "Why, I said, 'Yes, yes I will' and I meant it with all my heart." Then she continued, "And I am so glad that you called, because I couldn't remember who had asked me."

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!

Philippians 4:4

The apostle Paul was beaten, chased out of town and imprisoned during his ministry, but his faith never wavered. It isn't easy, when everything seems to be going against us. We stage a pity party and start whining, "Why me, Lord?" But do we forget to ask that question, when all goes well?

It is important for us not to take for granted the good times in our lives. Rejoice in the Lord, on the good days and even on the bad days, for God will always take care of you.

TODAY IS… CAN OPENER DAY

Tin cans were developed in 1810 for Royal Navy rations, but they forgot to invent a can opener. For years, soldiers opened cans with bayonets or rifle fire. In 1824, the cans carried by Arctic explorer, William Perry, carried the instructions, "Cut round top with hammer and chisel". A can opener like we know today wasn't patented until 1870. It had a cutting wheel that rolled around the rim of the can. It was improved in 1924 when a feed wheel was added. This method was used for the first electric can openers that went on the market in 1931 - and that same basic design is still used today.

Start your day off with a great big smile because every day should be a GREAT DAY.

One night, a twin-engine puddle jumper was flying somewhere above New Jersey. There were five people on board: the pilot, Michael Jordan, Bill Gates, a Tibetan monk, and a hippie.

Suddenly a fire broke out and the passenger cabin began to fill with smoke. The cockpit door opened, and the pilot burst into the compartment. "Gentlemen," he said, "I have good news and bad news.

The bad news is that we're about to crash in New Jersey. The good news is that there are four parachutes, and I have one of them!" With that, the pilot threw open the door and jumped from the plane.

Michael Jordan was on his feet in a flash. "Gentlemen," he said, "I am the world's greatest athlete. The world needs great athletes. I think the world's greatest athlete should have a parachute!" With these words, he grabbed one of the remaining parachutes, and hurtled through the door and into the night.

Bill Gates rose and said, "Gentlemen, I am the world's smartest man. The world needs smart men. I think the world's smartest man should have a parachute, too." He grabbed one, and out he jumped.

The old Tibetan monk and the hippie looked at one another. After a moment, the monk spoke. "My son," he said, "I have lived a long and satisfying life and have known the bliss of True Enlightenment. You have your whole life ahead of you. You take a parachute, and I will go down with the plane."

The hippie said, "Hey, don't sweat it, pop. The world's smartest man just jumped out wearing my backpack."

TODAY IS…HAIR DYE DAY

People have been dying their hair for 3000 years, but the first commercial hair dye company wasn't started until 1909 in France. The "French Harmless Hair Dye Company" later changed their name to "L'Oreal". The products were not widely used, and by 1950, only 7% of American women dyed their hair. A Clairol champaign during the 1960's raised this figure almost overnight. Showing pictures of women with children and running the line "does she or doesn't she", hair dye was suddenly acceptable. By the end of the decade, 70% of American women were using hair dye - it's up to 75% today.
