HAPPY TUESDAY

HOT HOT AND HOTTER !

Well August is now here. This is usually our hottest month of the year and just so we could set a new record…it’ll be over 100 degrees here today. It was sooo hot when I left work yesterday that I felt like I could hardly breath outside until I got in the car and put the a/c on.

DD fixed a delicious dinner for me and I had my first taste of a home grown fresh tomato too ! She has a nice garden and she gave me some cucumbers, a tomato, and a yellow squash. Yummm!!!

Next week is the first of our August birthdays and DS#5 will celebrate another year of blessings on the 9th…I’m planning to fix a birthday dinner for him on this coming Sunday. I don’t know yet if anyone else can make it, but if they do I hope they let me know so I can put another chicken in the pot. He requested chicken and rice – so that’s what it will be.

I was corrected on which son is doing the booth at the fair—it is DS#5 NOT DS#6 that is doing artwork at the fair this year…sorry about that! I DID know which son it was, just got the number wrong…Oh, dear.

Have a great day all ! Another wonderful one on the Way !

TODAY IS…RASPBERRY PIE DAY

Raspberries were one of the first European plants brought to America. They belong to the rose family and are usually red or purple - although you can also find gold and black. These sweet berries have tiny edible seeds and an intense flavor and aroma. This makes them perfect for flavors and syrups, but their most common use is in preserves and pies. They like to grow in the northern temporate zones - and they like to be eaten everywhere.

 RAPSBERRY CRISP PIE

1 qt (4 cups) fresh raspberries

1/3 cup sugar

1/4 cup margarine, softened

1/3 cup flour

1/3 cup brown sugar

3/4 cup rolled oats

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

2. Wash the raspberries and put in the bottom of a 9 inch baking pan. If you don't have a deep dish pie pan, use a casserole dish. Sprinkle sugar over the top of the raspberries.

3. In a medium bowl, mix the margarine, flour, brown sugar and oats with the back of a fork until it looks like coarse meal. Sprinkle over the raspberries and sugar.

4. Bake 30 minutes or until lightly browned. Serve hot or cold. Top with vanilla ice cream if desired.

Health Care... Two patients limp into two different medical clinics with the same complaint. Both have trouble walking and appear to require a hip replacement.

The first patient is examined within the hour, is x-rayed the same day and has a time booked for surgery the following week.

The second sees his family doctor after waiting a week for an appointment, then waits eighteen weeks to see a specialist, then gets an x-ray, which isn't reviewed for another month and finally has his surgery scheduled for a year from then.

Why the different treatment for the two patients?

The first is a Golden Retriever.

The second is a Senior Citizen.

TODAY’S REFLECTION

David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. David and all the people with him set out and went from Baale-judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the Lord of hosts who is enthroned on the cherubim. They carried the ark of God on a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were driving the new cart with the ark of God; and Ahio went in front of the ark. David and all the house of Israel were dancing before the Lord with all their might, with songs and lyres and harps and tambourines and castanets and cymbals.

2 Samuel 6:1-5

David and the people of Israel knew what it was like to live in the present. They knew what it meant to celebrate the wonder of God's active presence in their lives. Two times in the previous verses, we read that God had protected them and given them victory over their enemies, and now as they traveled - carrying the ark of God - they knew without a doubt that they were in the presence of the One who had delivered them. Many of us would pull ourselves together and move on. We have places to be and things to do.

The Israelites, however, chose to dance. They danced before God with “all of their might.” They danced with every ounce of their being. They did not stop journeying, but they continued to worship and celebrate as they went. What about you? When was the last time you “danced” before God? When did you worship with your whole being—not allowing your schedule or the expectations of others to impede you?

Dance then, wherever you may be.

I am the Lord of the Dance, said He!

HAPPY MONDAY

BACK TO WORK !

We sat on the porch a little yesterday evening, but not very long..very muggy.  It rained a little and cooled it off some but it was over 100 degrees here with the heat index.  I'm not sure how they figure it, but it's the 'feels like' temp not the one on the thermometer.

I received a call from DD yesterday when they were on their way home from camping and she invited me for dinner this evening.  I never pass up a chance to visit with my family, unless it can't be helped, so I'll be the taste tester on her first crock pot roast.  Sounds good to me.

DS#1 also called to let me know they were home from camping also.  They had a nice Saturday, but rain on Sunday.

DS#6 says he'll be having a booth at our county fair come the end of August doing his artwork.  This is the first time ever that I can remember the fair being the week before school starts.  He lucked out there.

That's the news from home as I know it.

Have a great day all !  Another wonderful one on the way !

TODAY IS…COTTON CANDY DAY !

Cotton candy is nothing but sugar, air and a little food coloring! And there is no way to make it without special equipment. You have to melt the sugar and spin it through small holes to make threads. The air cools the threads so they form a fluffy web that sticks to a paper cone. And why does it melt in your mouth? If you mix cotton candy with water, it dissolves right back into sugar.

The Weathered Old Barn

(Author Unknown)

A stranger came by the other day with an offer that set me to thinking. He wanted to buy the old barn that sits out by the highway. I told him right off he was crazy. He was a city type, you could tell by his clothes, his car, his hands, and the way he talked. He said he was driving by and saw that beautiful barn sitting out in the tall grass and wanted to know if it was for sale.

I told him he had a funny idea of beauty. Sure, it was a handsome building in its day. But then, there's been a lot of winters pass with their snow and ice and howling wind. The summer sun's beat down on that old barn till all the paint's gone, and the wood has turned silver gray. Now the old building leans a good deal, looking kind of tired.

Yet, that fellow called it beautiful. That set me to thinking. I walked out to the field and just stood there, gazing at that old barn.

The stranger said he planned to use the lumber to line the walls of his den in a new country home he's building down the road. He said you couldn't get paint that beautiful. Only years of standing in the weather, bearing the storms and scorching sun, only that can produce beautiful barn wood.

It came to me then. We're a lot like that, you and I. Only it's on the inside that the beauty grows with us. Sure we turn silver gray too ... and lean a bit more than we did when we were young and full of sap. But the Good Lord knows what He's doing. And as the years pass

He's busy using the hard wealth of our lives, the dry spells and the stormy seasons, to do a job of beautifying our souls that nothing else can produce. And to think how often folks holler because they want life easy!

They took the old barn down today and hauled it away to beautify a rich man's house. And someday you and I'll be hauled off to Heaven to take on whatever chores the Good Lord has for us on the Great Sky Ranch. And I suspect we'll be more beautiful then for the seasons we've been through here ... and add a bit of beauty to our Father's house.

TODAY’S REFLECTION

Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the saints.

Philemon vs. 7

We have a temporary friendship with so many along the path of simple living -- neighbors who stay for just a short time, people we meet at a resort or convention. It is so hard to remember everyone.

In today's scripture, Paul is telling his friend how happy he is that his friend has "refreshed the hearts of the saints." Perhaps you may not remember everyone's name, but who knows what an impact you have had on the people you have met.

If you allow the Lord to be your guide, you may be able to encourage and inspire someone during that short fellowship together. If so, you're responding to Jesus' command: "Love your neighbor as yourself.

HAPPY SUNDAY

Suddenly Sunday is here again. My Saturday whizzed by. We got the lawn mowed early in the day which was good because it became very hot and humid here. The house blessing and the laundry got done and we took dinner out to my Dad and spent the evening with him.

Today I’m off to church for my weekly dose of R& R and then home where I’ll probably spend most of the day indoors. It is just plain hot out today.

Take good care all and try to keep cool!

TODAY IS…DEVILED EGG DAY !

What's a picnic without deviled eggs? These little delights are always the first to disappear from any table. And we all know somebody who is famous for their deviled eggs. So, where did they get their name? It's because they are always made with mustard!

FAMOUS DEVILED EGGS

6 eggs

2 tablespoons mayonnaise, sour cream or plain yogurt

3/4 teaspoon yellow mustard

1/2 teaspoon lemon juice or pickle juice (optional)

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/8 teaspoon pepper

 Paprika

1. Place eggs in a cold pan of water. Bring the water to a boil. Cover the pan with a tight fitting lid and turn off the heat. Let the eggs sit for 30 minutes to cook. Put the pan in the sink and run cold water over the eggs before peeling to keep the shells from sticking. 2. Cut the eggs in half lengthwise and take out the yolk with a small spoon. Place the egg yolks in a bowl and the whites on a plate. 3. Mash the yolks with fork. Stir in the remaining ingredients until well blended. Refill the whites, using about 1 tablespoon of yolk mixture for each egg half. Sprinkle with paprika and chill to blend the flavors.

 The Trouble Tree

The carpenter I hired to help me restore an old farmhouse had just finished a rough first day on the job. A flat tire made him lose an hour of work, his electric saw quit and now his ancient pickup truck refused to start.

While I drove him home, he sat in stony silence. On arriving, he invited me in to meet his family. As we walked toward the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands. When opening the door, he underwent an amazing transformation.

His tanned face was wreathed in smiles and he hugged his two small children and gave his wife a kiss. Afterward he walked me to the car. We passed the tree and my curiosity got the better of me. I asked him about what I had seen him do earlier.

"Oh, that's my trouble tree," he replied. "I know I can't help having troubles on the job, but one thing for sure, troubles don't belong in the house with my wife and the children. So I just hang them up on the tree every night when I come home. Then in the morning I pick them up again.

"Funny thing is," he smiled, "when I come out in the morning to pick 'em up, there ain't nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before."

TODAY’S REFLECTION

For everything there is a season, and a time for very purpose under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace."

Ec. 3:1- 8

Successful people are at the rightplace at the right time to a great extent because they have learned how to take certain action steps in proper sequence. They have learned that scriptural truth, "to everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven."

They know that everything they desire has an appropriate place and time for accomplishment, and toward that end, they set their priorities in certain orders, prepare themselves in certain ways, and refuse to give in to discouragement or failures along the way.

TODAY IS…COUNTRY MUSIC DAY

Singing stories began in the Middle Ages and moved to America with the early settlers. By 1900, stories sung to fiddles spread through Appalachia and the Old West. In the 1920s, radio put these fiddlers on the air and created a national audience for the music. "Grand Ole Opry" Master of Ceremonies, George D. Hay, called it "down to earth, for the earthy."

We call it country music.

He called them, talked to them, they said it was "a glitch" and told him they'd take care of it.. The following month he tried to charge something and couldn't. He called the credit card company who again said they'd take care of it..

The next day he got his bill for $0.00 stating that he was very delinquent.. The man figured the credit card company would take care of it, so he didn't worry. The next month he got a bill for $0.00 stating that he had 10 days to pay or his account was going to collection..

He mailed the credit card company a check for $0.00, and the credit card company's computer processed it, noting that his account was now paid in full..

A week later, the man's bank called him asking him what he was doing writing a check for $0.00. He explained and they said, "Well, your $0.00 check has caused our check processing software to fail. We now can't process ANY of our checks from that day electronically because that $0.00 check is causing the program to abort."

The man, who had been considering buying his wife a computer for her birthday, bought her a typewriter instead.

Hello from tropical Northern Ohio ! We’ve been sweltering a little here. I know that in the middle of winter I’ll want some of this heat, but right now it’s a bit overpowering for me

TODAY IS…CHEESE LOVERS DAY !

Cheese dates back to prehistoric times. Somebody noticed that milk left in a container finally curdled - and faster in hot weather than cold. This was also probably the first scientific discovery by man. There are hundreds of different kinds of cheese - raw, skimmed or pasteurised - cow, goat, sheep, buffalo, horse or camel. All of them are good!

TRIPPLE CHEESE SPAGHETTI

6 oz. uncooked spaghetti

3/4 cup ricotta (or cottage) cheese

1/2 cup (2 oz.) grated Romano cheese

2 cups (16 oz. jar) spaghetti sauce

1 teaspoon basil

2 teaspoons oregano

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

4 oz. mozzarella cheese, shredded

1. Cook spaghetti according to package directions. Drain. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (176 degrees C). 2. In a large bowl, mix the ricotta and Romano cheeses, 1 cup of spaghetti sauce, basil, oregano, and pepper. Save the remaining spaghetti sauce. 3. Dump the cooked spaghetti into the bowl with the cheese mixture. Stil until well coated. Pour into a greased casserole dish. Top pasta with the shredded mozzarella cheese. 4. Cover with lid or foil and bake 20 minutes. Remove cover. Continue baking until cheese bubbles then remove from the oven. Let stand for 3 minutes. 5. Cut into 4-6 servings. Top each serving with some saved spaghetti sauce.

TODAY’S SMILE

A minister dies and is waiting in line at the Pearly Gates. Ahead of him is a man who’s dressed in sunglasses, a loud shirt, leather jacket and jeans. Saint Peter turns to the first man and asks, “Who are you, so that I may know whether or not to admit you to the Kingdom of Heaven?”

“I’m Joe Jones," says the man, "and I was a taxi driver in New York City.” Saint Peter consults his list and says, “Take this silken robe and golden staff and enter.”

When it’s the minister’s turn, he stands erect and booms out, “I am Joseph Snow, pastor of New Covenant Tabernacle for the last 37 years.” Saint Peter consults his list and says, “Take this cotton robe and wooden staff and enter.”

“Just a minute,” says the minister. “That man was a taxi driver and he gets a silken robe and golden staff. How can this be?” “Up here, we go by results,” says Saint Peter. “While you preached, people slept; while he drove, people prayed.”

ONE MORE

A woman finds herself in dire financial trouble. Desperate, she goes to church and begins to pray. "God, please help me. I've lost my business and I'm going to lose my house as well. Please let me win the lottery."

Lottery night comes, and she is devastated when someone else wins. She prays again. "God, please let me win the lottery. I've lost my business, my house, and I'm going to lose my car as well."

Lottery night comes, and once again she has no luck. Once again, she prays. "God, I've lost my business, my house and my car. Please just let me win the lottery this one time so I can get my life back in order."

Suddenly, the heavens open. There is a blinding flash of light and a voice echoes through the church. "Work with me here, my child. Buy a ticket."

TODAY’S REFLECTION

I have set the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. There-fore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure...

Psalm 16: 8-9

The psalmist trusts the Lord and thus he enjoys four blessings

I will not be shaken." No matter the situation, he acts in an ethical manner. "

My heart is glad." He wastes no time in worry, bitterness or anger. "

My tongue rejoices." He wastes no time in whining and complaining. "

My body also will rest secure." He suffers no sleepless nights or anxious days, and this is good for his health.

But you may ask, "How is it possible for me to follow these steps?" The psalmist gives the answer: "I have set the Lord always before me." Keep your eyes on Jesus and you will have the confidence you need

HAPPY THURSDAY

After a very hot day yesterday a nice breeze came through and we were able to get out for our evening walk. Just after we got home we had a little rain shower, but we could use more. I hope it doesn’t wait for the weekend . The campers in the family have had quite enough of that !

It was a long 10 hour day at work yesterday which is a good thing I guess, it means we are busy and have plenty of work.

I talked with DDIL#5 just briefly this evening and she is doing well. DS#6 has a little booth at the Metro Parks craft show this weekend doing his art work.. He really is doing quite well with his sideline job.

That’s the news from home, pretty quiet here.

Have a great day ! Another wonderful one on the Way

TODAY IS… BUGS BUNNY DAY

Bugs first said, "What's up, Doc?" in a cartoon called 'A Wild Hare', directed by Tex Avery and released by Warner Bros. in 1940. Artist Bob Clampett created Bugs after seeing actor Clark Gable munching a carrot in the movie It Happened One Night. Avery (from Texas) wanted to call him Jack Rabbit, but he was finally named "Bugs" - the nickname of another cartoon director. Food companies begged to have him chew on celery or brocolli, but carrots were always the trademark of the "waskely wabbit". A recent survey ranks him as the most popular animated character in the world today

Deep within a forest a little turtle began to climb a tree. After hours of effort he reached the top, jumped into the air waving his front legs and crashed to the ground. After recovering, he slowly climbed the tree again, jumped, and fell to the ground.

The turtle tried again and again while a couple of birds sitting on a branch watched his sad efforts. Finally, the female bird turned to her mate. "Dear," she chirped, "I think it's time to tell him he's adopted."

Our temperatures are rising once more and each of the next few days promises a thunder shower or two…we’ll see how many evening walks I get in this week

This is the last full week of July already and it hardly seems possible. August will begin next week and I always think of that as the last  ‘real’  month of Summer. I still haven’t had my ‘trip to the beach’ yet and I’d better get busy or the time will slip away from me.

HAPPY MONDAY

BACK TO WORK !

Yesterday was a beautiful sunny day ! I managed to get 2 walks in. The first was a shorter one as I walked to church and back and the 2nd was a little longer as we walked uptown around the square and back again. It’s 5 blocks to church and 9 blocks to uptown. I think the longer walk is about 2 miles and that’s doing good for me.

The week ahead looks to be another quiet one. Nothing going on around here in the evenings anyway, just off to work each day.

Ice Cream is Good for the Soul

Last week I took my children to a restaurant. My six-year-old son had asked if he could say grace. As we bowed our heads he said, "God is good. God is great. Thank you for the food, and I would even thank you more if Mom gets us ice cream for dessert. And Liberty and justice for all. Amen."

Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby, I heard a woman remark, "That's what's wrong with this country. Kids today don't even know how to pray. Asking God for ice-cream. Why, I never."

Hearing this, my son burst into tears and asked me, "Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?" As I held him and assured him that he had done a terrific job and God was certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentleman approached the table. He winked at my son and said, " I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer."

"Really?," my son asked. "Cross my heart." Then in a theatrical whisper he added (indicating the woman whose remark had started this whole thing), "Too bad she never asks God for ice cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes."

Naturally, I bought my kids ice cream at the end of the meal. My son stared at his ice cream for a moment and then did something I will remember the rest of my life. He picked up his sundae and without a word walked over and placed it in front of the woman. With a big smile he told her, "Here, this is for you. Ice cream is good for the soul sometimes, and my soul is good already."

HAPPY SUNDAY !

Good News for this morning, DDIL # 5 is home and doing very well. DS#5 called me yesterday morning to let me know. He also let me know about his adventure the night before. When he got home from the hospital he let the dogs out in the fenced backyard. A few minutes later one returned to the door and boy did he smell – a skunk had sprayed him. Needless to say they both had to have several baths…and it was afternight midnight before he got some sleep. There’s nothing like a little adventure in your life !

As usual I’m off to church this morning and will be praying for all of you !
